This is a wonderful library to have in town. Sure it's small, but Morris Plains is also small. There are other large libraries nearby such as the Morris County Library and Morristown Library. For a local town library this checks off all of the boxes. Staff is friendly and helpful. There is a large children's section and everything is well-organized and clean. In addition to books there are some other things to occupy the kids like a dollhouse and a train. They also have events for kids like story time (outdoors in the summer) and crafts. In the winter there is a great hill to go sledding. Happy to have this library nearby and I'm sure we'll be in often, especially now that my 3.5 year old is a proud library card holder. read more

This library is on Glenbrook Road off of Speedwell Ave. and used to be a farmhouse. There are four computers with internet that can be used for job searches, e-mail, etc. you can print out and make copies (fee). The library also recently added WiFi so you can use your own laptop if your internet connection at home is malfunctioning. They have "Story Time", for preschoolers ages 3 and up this is highlighted with some of the latest children's literature and themed activities. These activities seem to be on Wednesdays, but it is best to call for information to confirm. Their Children's Summer Program includes a reading club and special events featuring story tellers, magicians, live animals and music. Once again, call for information, they have no reliable website. This library is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The MAIN (Morris Automated Information Network Library Catalog) library system allows you to reserve books via the internet for delivery to the Morris Plains library (all Morris County Libraries, so pick the one in your town). This has literally saved me thousands of dollars in book purchases. I used to spend $60.00 a month at Barnes and Noble. I NEVER buy books anymore. I've signed on to the MAIN e-mail newsletters with book recommendations, click on the books I like, reserve them on-line and pick them up at my library when they become available (they call me and leave a message on my cell). If I need to renew a book I can do it online so I never have late fees. Then when I'm done, I can return the book - no storage issues no space issues. The librarians are all retired ladies (and one gentleman) who are lovely, personable and extremely nice to me and my toddler! They have a new library director who rules with "an iron fist!" No, I'm kidding, she's actually very nice and hasn't thrown me out yet. The patrons are mostly the jobless (been there!), job seeking, mommies with kids running in and out and the recently retired. I used to bring my kids here when they were small for the storyhour which was wonderful. As an adult user, since I work 9 - 5, I find the hours of this library strange. They are only open SOME nights for 2 hours and I can't keep straight which hours they are. Also they are only open on Sat. for a short time .... Because of this, I rarely go to this library anymore. I use the county library which is open 9 to 9 most nights and weekends. Also, some of the older ladies at the front desk are REALLY computer illiterate. read more

Went to this library today with the two boys I nanny. The boys just recently moved to the area so they had never been to this library either. I wanted to see if I could get them a library card or at least find out the details for their parents. I figured I wouldn't be able to get books out for them but was gonna try anyway. (My own library has relaxed rules so maybe it wouldn't be a big deal) The library itself was disappointing. It had books but it was very small. We found 3 books and went to the desk to see if we could possibly get a library card and take them out. The old lady with short brown hair at the main desk was a major library book nazi. The short version is that I asked her how to go about getting the 4 year old a library card and all she did was make snotty remarks regarding his age (which she didn't even know). After I told her he was 4, she made another comment about his inability to read the books so she basically told me he wouldn't have use for a library card. I am a teacher so at that moment I am screaming inside. Going to the library as a kid and getting my first library card was monumental for me! She was totally ruining the experience. After we discussed the possibility of the parents getting a library card to take out books, She then told me that the family doesn't live in Morris Plains (which they definitely do) so they wouldn't be able to even take books out and they would have to go to a different library. Her attitude was terrible and made me feel like I was committing a crime to even be there. read more

A Relaxing Room for Reading in Roberts Garden Morris Plains Public Library was once the home of the Roberts family. It still looks like an impressive house from the exterior which gives it a hidden gem kind of feel when you go by. It is also nestled into the corner of Roberts Garden which makes it a very visible landmark when you are near the intersection of Glennbrook Road and Mountain Way in Morris Plains. There is water cooler water available in the children's section and a restroom near the front desk area. Currently (Summer 2016) the parking lot and sidewalks to the entrance are being re-finished, but do not be deterred as the Library is still open for normal business hours. When you walk through the entrance doors you will be just feet from the front desk which is where the volunteers that run the library are stationed. They will be able to help you sign up for a library card IF you live in Morris Plains. When we moved within a 3 minute walk to this location the woman behind the desk initially told us we didn't live in Morris Plains which we found a bit strange. Turns out that she had to turn over the SHEET OF PAPER that verifies the streets and addresses that are considered part of Morris Plains. That's right, this library depends on a sheet of paper to verify if you live in Morris Plains... Unfortunately the volunteers here do not seem very technologically savvy, but it is a library housing paper books so I can't be too upset about this. Also, I can't fault volunteers who are grandparent age for not being uber strong into computer use. When we asked if we could sign up for the library card once it was verified that we did in fact live in Morris Plains the woman said something to the effect of: "I don't know, we close in 40 minutes and I'm not sure I can do that in time." Ok sweet old volunteer librarian, I'm going to let that slide and roll the dice to see if you can make it happen or not. While we waited to see if the library card could be done or not we decided to go into the children's reading section off to the left of the front desk. There is an adorabeazle little children's reading room with a bay window view looking into Roberts Park. The window allows an incredible amount of natural light which helps for reading on the reading nook next to the window. There is also a children's table and seats in the middle of the room to help your little one(s) enjoy reading a book or more. After we found a few books that our little one was excited to borrow we headed back to the front desk to see if our librarian had succeeded in getting us signed up for a library card. Fortunate for us she was able to complete her task and we were on our way to checking out a few great books to read as bedtime stories. If you go to the right of the front desk you will find the non-fiction and fiction sections of the library. You will first see 4 computer stations for public use to help you surf the web or look up some books in the Morris County Library system. If you continue to the next room to the right you will enter into a space that has some excellent views of Roberts Garden. This room has the feel of being in a more spacious big box book store without the smell of coffee in the air. We have been back several times since and have always had a pleasant experience. The staff has always been fun to chat with and have given us little bits of history of the library and Morris Plains. If you live in the area and enjoy frequenting quiet little libraries this is the place for you. read more
