Had some solid Mexican food here. Ordered Bistek ranchero mexicano, Chicken enchiladas, Al pastor burrito, Al pastor tacos. Everything was good sized and with good flavor. Bistek has very thin been pieces about 3/4" square in ranchero source with a fresh salid next to it, refried beans, rice and marm tortillas. It was very good. The only thing I can offer is there were many onions where there could have been a bit more tomato / tomatillo and maybe a jalepino. The burrito was carefully put together and had good flavor, the pastor was nicely flavored with a good bit a spice to it. The chicken enchiladas were good sized with a good amount of cheese also with a fresh little salad. I did not even get to the tacos yet, will have those tomorrow. Definitely a solid meal! read more

This is a really nice local restaurant with excellent staff and a great menu. We have ordered from here for delivery and have always LOVED our food. Fresh and one of the best seafood selections in the area. We decided to dine in this evening. I started with a cocktail. I really enjoyed the 18yr Single Malt. Who would have thought this gem of a place would have had this? Service was pretty good. The one challenge was that our party only spoke English and they did not. I want to be clear, they actually pulled a few people together to help understand our questions (we had a few) and they were GREAT! For their primary clientele, there is no problem and I personally was not offended one bit. They were polite and really wanted us to have a great time. We had their Steak Burrito which was done FANTASTIC. Really fresh and well cooked. Loved left overs the next day. We also had a combination plate with Flautas, Enchilada and Tostada. Was also really good and fresh. Loved the chicken. I started with a Ceviche and the fish was a fantastic combination. Unfortunately, it didn't taste fresh. I ordered 20lbs of barbacoa for Christmas. I have always ordered barbacoa from lomelis supermarket for special events because it has always been delicious, but this time I called and they told me someone would call me back to take my order. This place who is next door to Lomeli's called me back and assured me that it was the same barbacoa they sell at lomelis supermarket. So I placed my order, drove all the way from Chicago to pick up and they told me I had to wait one more hour. Fine I waited... however when I got the barbacoa I was disappointed that it didn't look the same like previous large orders I've bought before. Meat was super DRY, no taste at all. Took it home shredded it and while shredding I noticed it had small pieces of aluminum all throughout the meat!!!! It was Christmas Eve and we were counting on this to be our main dish, so we tried to make the best of it. So disappointed that we drove for an hr to pick up trays of meat that was DRY, TASTELESS, HARD, and had Aluminum foil all in it. I will never ever order from here again!! The tacos were a miss - they had a good amount of meat but it was dried out. The rice and beans are really flavorful. The molcajete is amazing! Seasoned chicken, pork, arrachera, nopales, cebollitas, and cheese with salsa. All of it was delicious! Jalapeño margarita was from a mix, but lots of fresh jalepeño so spicy enough to still be good. I can't tell you enough how much we love coming to this place! Their drink are to die for! I usually always order their Cecina dinner and it comes with nopales, a cheese enchilada, rice, beans, jalapeños, cebollas. I usually only eat a small portion and take most of it home. To begin with they give you free chicken noodle soup with a tinge of spice!! It's so good! Along with the free basket of chips and salsa. We also ordered the guacamole this time and it was obvious that they made it fresh. Huge chunks of avocado which I absolutely love! Just awful! We decided to go after years banning the food. Well from the greasy squirt oil in your mouth chips to the chicken that tasted strong it was gross. Food was hot but no flavor. Service ok if your into no flavor or spice maybe, only good thing was the mountain of rice piled up next to my soggy fake gross chicken tostada. The only person wearing a mask in the whole place was our waitress! Every single other person in the kitchen and serving had their mask on their chin or DIDNT wear it at all. WIFE SRIKES AGAIN My wife is riding a heater on Yelp. She keeps pulling out these gem restaurants off Yelp in the Burbs. First she delivered Middle Eastern in Waukegan, then she mastered Italian in Gurnee and now she amazed me with Mexican in Round Lake Beach! I can hardly wait to see where she is going to drag me to next. I might have to make a Yelp List for my wife. This place was cute from the street. There was a great patio outside with beautiful flowers. When we walked in at 12:38pm I remarked to my wife that they had a great crowd for a Monday. Then at about 12:53pm there was another rush and this place filled up. That is the sign of a good restaurant. If its always busy then they are doing something right. I did joke with my wife that the restaurant wasn't authentic and she said, "How do you know?" I said, "There sign doesn't say so!" That's an inside joke between us. So many Mexican restaurants write authentic on their outdoor sign but that doesn't mean anything. It's the taste of the food that is key. I will say that I was impressed with the food. I wasn't totally impressed with the chips and salsa. The chips seemed like they were out of a bag. We make homemade chips at home and you can tell when chips are processed. Now I'm not saying that the chips were bad but after tasting the food I was a little let down with the chips. Also a second basket of chips was $2.95, which seemed high for homemade chips. I can make 48 chips for 33 cents. That would fill about 4 baskets. I also was not impressed with the salsa. My wife asked the waitress and she said it was homemade. I'm so spoiled at the salsas in Chicago. One place gives us 8+ salsas and we are just blown away. So these weren't my favorite but hey they were free, so I won't hold that against them. As we were sitting there, our waitress dropped off 3 bowls of spicy chicken vegetable tomato soup. I will say that this was a nice touch. Our little one who loves soup even went for it. We are slowly increasing her spice level because we eat a lot of spicy and she really loved this soup. In fact, she ate two cups of it...my poor wife lost out again. As we were eating our soup, my Steak Burrito Suizo hit the table. I must say it was beautiful to look at. There was a small salad, beans and rice on the side. As I cut into my burrito I noticed steam pouring out. This thing just came out of the oven. I blew on it for a bit but I had to dive in risking a burnt tongue. I will say that I got goose bumps on my arm, after the first bite. That doesn't happen often. There was a major flavor explosion going on. The quality of the steak was good but it was the combination on the inside that really shined. I also noticed a type of chiplote mayo inside. It was a unique taste and something you typically don't find in a steak burrito. I loved it and it worked with every bite I took. My wife and little one got chicken tacos and those seemed to take a little longer to make. There lunch showed up 10 minutes, after mine. My family was nice enough to let me start eating. In fact, I was amazed how hot my burrito still was. It retained its heat until the last bite and I ate it slow to enjoy it. My girls loved there chicken tacos. I tried some of the white meat and it was really good. They did not skimp on the chicken. The rest of my lunch became a free for all. My wife took my salad, my little one took the rice and I grabbed the beans. I love sharing! It's better then over ordering. I loved the detail to small things like lime wedges on every water glass. Also our waitresses were really nice. One girl took our order but another delivered food as soon as it was hot off the grill. In fact, both spent time at our table ensuring we were happy with our food. I also loved how when our bill arrived there were 2 peppermint candies for us and 1 sucker for the little one. Again attention to detail. No other restaurant puts that much thought into the free candy they deliver with the bill. I also must say that this place is incredibly affordable. All 3 of us ate for $13. That is amazing. We are going to have to make this place a regular stop. So if you find yourself in Round Lake Beach starving for delicious Mexican food then look no further. This place is gonna fill you up without emptying your wallet. It is so easy to find average food in a small town but this place shines and could stand on its own next to any amazing Mexican restaurant. I can't wait to return to Round Lake beach for an our next meal because I'm eating here again! read more

I keep researching for the best Mexican Restaurant near my home & I've been disappointed. When it comes to really great Mexican food, I look for tender chicken or steak pieces, great flavors, generous portions, etc. Ever since I noticed the review by Anthony M and his wife, I wanted to check out this place. Unfortunately it took a few months but this past weekend, my husband and I finally went to check it out for ourselves. As you turn onto the street, you notice a small town feel and other local Mexican businesses. I felt that was a good sign to be a local favorite. When I walked into the restaurant, I noticed the nice ethnic Decor and spacious seating. We were greeted immediately and then seated at a booth. A server immediately came up to us to take our drink order. My husband immediately suggested we should try their guacamole, which was delicious!!!! Complimentary salsa and chips were good and I noticed a tip on Yelp that said if we ordered a second basket of chips, they would charge us (helpful Tip). For a meal, I went with the usual --- I ordered chicken enchiladas Verdes. My husband ordered a steak Burrito. The meal came out a lot sooner than we thought but I could not believe the large portions. They were very generous with the shredded chicken in my enchiladas and very cheesy. The Spanish rice was light. It came with re fried beans & a Salad. The server was very attentive, he made sure we got refills on our drinks. About a half an hour after we arrived, the restaurant started filling up. I know why, because they serve great food. I'm so glad Anthony and his wife reviewed this place. This place used to have great food. I stopped going there due to the rude servers, but went out because a family member wanted to attend. First off, there was a long hair in our salsa, small apology was given and more salsa was brought out. Next my sons food (just 2 tacos, came out 30 mins after the rest of our food. My wife's food never came, so she just took it to go when they realized they were wrong. They didn't charge her for it, but their food is over priced anyway. The food isn't anywhere near as good as it used to be, the drinks are flat, and once again over priced. The servers still walk around like they're doing you a favor by serving you, still rude. So today my life changed greatly for the better. My wife had their food at a work thing and just so happens a few days later we were near by. We had to get it to go but just had to try. In fact, turns out I did some UE I'll call it since not sure I can say exactly what UE is and orders were always pretty big. But I digress, went with what she loved, the enchiladas verde filled with cheese and turned those into meals (you know classic rice and beans side). Added a few steak tacos since of course that is the standard item to compare all Mexican restaurants. So there is a special flavor that homemade enchiladas have, my grandma's enchiladas have, I can't really explain it but I can tell you this place had it!! I mean to a "T". These were the most amazing enchiladas I ever had. The sides were as solid as can be, especially when normally they're just...eh, ok. Monster flavor! Even the little salad that came with it was tasty and the veggie cuts were noticeable. This dish was so good we didn't even notice the red and green salsa included. The steak taco not only compared to my most favorite place ever, it may have been a little better. I'm withholding final judgement out of loyalty. I was so full but had to try one with the red and one with the green salsas and ladies and gentlemen, you must try this place if you are anywhere close. Homerun!! read more

My husband, his family, and I decided to stop by this restaurant for lunch after church. We have no idea why this place isn't four stars. The food was some of the best Mexican food we've ever had! I was genuinely surprised because I thought my favorite Mexican restaurant back in Washington couldn't be beat! This place is right on par. The food portions were VERY generous! I wanted to take my wife there tonight, but she wasn't feeling well, so I decided on carryout, as I was planning on this all week. I ordered from their web site menu the Enchiladas Suizas with steak. I also ordered a taco for the ride home. The place is clean and well-lit. Nice ambiance. The staff is friendly, if not a bit modest. I asked the woman that helped me "Is the food really good". She replied "the food is pretty good". I told her I had driven 30 miles for my food (actually only 3 miles!) and expected a great meal based on what I had read online. She said "I hope you won't be disappointed". Her hope was met! I devoured the fantastic steak taco when I got to my car. I could see her watching me through the window as she was working. A knowing smile told me that she knew I was loving it. When I arrived home, I was TOTALLY satisfied that this was the best I had experienced in a LONG time! The ingredients were fresh, the beans were perfect and the rice was moist and flavorful. In a largely Mexican neighborhood, you can't go too far wrong if you eat where the locals do. And this is the place. They've got a nice depth to their daily menu, and they add special weekend dishes like menudo and carnitas. They've got good coffee and all the agua fresca drinks (horchata and jamaica) that you'd expect from a real authentic Jalisco-style restaurant. Then, they brought out this chicken tomato soup, did not even ask for it, and it was the best Mexican Soup that I ever had.
