Ramuntxo Berri is a first-rate restaurant where the cooks are not afraid to experiment by adding new ingredients to classic pintxos that make this place a must visit for anyone interested in Basque cuisine. My wife and I came here with the intention of having one pintxo each and moving on to another spot. That all changed after the first round of pintxos. We started with the the carbon de brie, which is a square of brie deep fried and covered with poppy seeds. It comes with a sweet tomato-like sauce that makes for a sumptuous combination. Next up was the txipiron a la plancha, or grilled squid, which was unbelievable. The squid was tender and tasty and covered with an olive oil-butter sauce, which is typical for squid pintxos. But what made this dish stand out was caramelized onions that were sprinkled on top of the squid. It elevated this classic pintxo by adding a unique flavor. The servings came with crispy pieces of fresh bread, which are baked at the restaurant and served warm. Of course, we washed this all down with two classic Basque drinks: sagardoa, or cider, and txakoli, or bubbly white wine. Wanting some fresh vegetables, we ordered the ración, or plate, of sliced tomatoes topped with tuna and onions and covered in an olive oil sauce with salt. The tomatoes were fresh and sweat and the onions and chunks of tuna added a nice texture to this outstanding dish. In some ways, the food at Ramuntxo Berri has taken on the character of the trendy Gross neighborhood where it's located. Just a few minutes walk from the historic part of Donostia, or San Sebastian, which is home to some of the city's best pintxo bars, this place features a fresh take on the classic pintxo recipes that have made this city one of Europe's top food destinations. read more
