As I continue slowly catching up on finishing the *many* review drafts of places I visited in our whirlwind tour of Portugal in January, in this case one of a whole bunch of port-focused wineries within convenient walking distance of each other, that obviously being why I chose to stay at an airbnb on this side of the bridge, so I could visit as many of them as possible. Funny enough, at first glance, this tasting room felt *very* corporate - there's tons of space to spread out, but the overall vibe of the place was something like "museum gift shop". You can tell the receptionist is just a receptionist and has nothing to do with the wine's creation, which isn't inherently bad, it just sets a different tone than some of the *smallest* port tasting rooms. That said, their prices were extremely reasonable pretty much all across the board, including a base flight for 12.50 euros that had multiple standouts for the trip, enough so that this was the only tasting room where I went back a couple days later and self-constructed a second 20 euro flight that included a couple of their more somewhat more bottles. Though, funny enough, it was mostly their cheapest bottles that impressed me the most in their complexity of flavor - their tawny reserve, the Lagrima das Damas, the Lacrimosas, the base (slightly less sweet) white, and one truly interesting bottle, a Vinho Quinado, effectively a tawny port turned into an amaro with quinine and other botanicals, which as a cocktail nerd, obviously I loved learning about and trying. They *have* plenty of very expensive bottles, but the ones I mentioned were, as of when I visited a couple months ago, just *ludicrously* well-priced for how good they were. (I bought the most bottles here of anywhere I went, 3 including the Vinho Quinado - and would definitely have bought a couple more, if luggage weight hadn't been such a consideration.) I totally wasn't expecting to love their cheapest bottles, honestly, more than some of the much pricier ones I tried, here and elsewhere. read more

From a Kanaka, as you walk in, it seems like a typical tourist trap. Counter, Plexi glass, brand names all over. Not homey like the smaller port tasting spots. We took the $20 tour. Good history-buff tour. Warm in the museum. Bit stuffy but a great place to view memorabilia and learn the history of this influential family. Ended with a port tasting that was quiet nice. I prefer smaller tasting groups thene being part of a large scheduled group. Service was very good. read more

Went in for port wine tasting @ 10:30am, why not? We shared the middle-tier tasting and it was affordable at 15eu. The pour was very generous compared to Napa/Sonoma. The receptionist was friendly and gave us brief introduction of the 5 wines included in the package. We ended up buying 2 of the mini sets to take home. They turned out to be couple dollars more than the liquor store in the area but oh well, we had a good relaxing time there. They must have just raised their prices because today it was 19€ for a tour and three tastings (white, ruby, tawny), but still a good experience. They kick off tours every 20 minutes but the language will be chosen by whoever books first. That's pretty funny, but it makes sense. The "Museum" part of the tour is held in their old offices, and it's pretty interesting. For example, two pilots were flying from Porto to Brazil to bring a thank you book and bottle of port to the mayor in 1926 for promoting their port in Rio. But they had engine trouble and had to land in the ocean. They didn't figure out how to fix it until they drank the bottle, so the mayor only got the book and the bottle is back in this museum on display! Also interesting to see the client contracts and tasting room. And the old bottles with labels like the one designed by Mucha! The cellar tour was also pretty good, the pours were decent, and the port as well. I avoided the Cálem tour because it felt too crowded and sleek there, and their museum was focused more on the making of port than the business history. Graham's was too far up the hill. read more

If you're going to do wine tasting and tour in the Porto area, you must go to this one. Came here at the recommendation of another one of my tour guides. They do a tour of the facility as well as winetasting at the end of the tour for €12. It was definitely interesting to hear the history of the orange the founder of this winery, and hear about how he cater to his customers, and used many of the marketing tools of the modern world. He was absolutely a marketing genius. Part of the tour we also got to visit his private office, and where he met with his VIP clients. after that part we went down to the cellar where we got to see all of the barrels of wine aging. Eventually we made our way back up to the tasting room where we got three different kinds of wine. They also offer more premium wine tasting with the 20 year and 30 year aged ports. The wine was absolutely delicious and you may not taste the alcohol but it will knock you over in about 20 minutes. I sat there couldn't really get up but was very happy. On the day we visited, we have already toured some other port houses with more famous names. Wanting to try something different, we entered this one at random as it's right there on the main strip. We didn't sign up for the tour, but instead just ordered a tasting. If you are going as a couple, you are welcome to order one tasting to share, and it's generally a good idea because being a sweet fortified wine, that tiny glass lasts longer than you may expect. The tasting is a very laissez faire event, we received several glasses along with some cards printed with information. If you want more information, I suppose you can always walk up to the counter and start a chat, but for us, we are glad to be left along. We sat on the comfortable sofas, resting our legs (walking up and down hill and across that bridge can be brutal) and sipping good wine, as we plotted what else to do during our stay. read more

Perhaps we were toured out by the time we took this short tour of Ramos Pinto. We found this experience to only be mildly interesting. The tour guide was a bit stiff and scripted, perhaps if it were in Portuguese she would have been more fluid. The best part was seeing the original company offices and the risqué advertisements. It also was fun to see the casks aging the ports. And of course it was nice to sample a couple of their products at the end. After doing many excellent tours in the first week or so of our trip to Portugal this one just did not measure up... read more

I love Ramos Pinto, but I did not share the same affection for hospitality in the tasting room. I know, it's Europe and not Napa, but after I ordered from the port tasting menu, I was brought five generous pours of different port styles and a pamphlet that, although pretty, said little about the ports I was tasting. It was a self-guided tasting without much guidance. Way more fun was the tour of the cellar and the museum, which included the original offices and a lot of fascinating information about the history of the company. read more

Lovely place for understanding the history of port wine! I came here as part of a walking tour of Port Wine houses. I do recommend taking some sort of guided tour of this place if available. They have a museum portion that's quite lovely and shows the history of this winemaker's rise. They have a Portuguese origin, as contrasted with many of the large port houses that are British, though they were bought by a French company a few decades ago. The actual port is pretty good; I'm not much of a connoisseur, but I did like them, but didn't love them. Still, a great way to learn about wines. Bathrooms: Clean and functional, if I recall correctly. read more

Finally got a chance to take a Port Tasting where it all started. Porto, Portugal, and Ramos Pinto didn't disappoint. I opted for the tasting only intermediate ports at 15 euros to share with my wife. (I highly recommending sharing as this stuff is strong and sweet) 1 white and 4 reds. After a slow taste test white for my wife and the 7 year red for me. I didn't buy any ports after the taste instead I purchased 5 posters. Note the show Friends made his posters a household name, one of the characters had the poster in her apartment. I actually like the poster and will hang it once I have it framed..... Now I'm going to give you the biggest secret of the day. Do not buy port at the port houses, repeat don't buy at the port house, the ports are much cheaper at the liquor stores a few blocks from the area. I saved more than half on a Bottle of Graham Mature Reserve Tawny. read more

Love this place. I visited a lot of the port houses/caves and really liked this one. They have an option of just port tastings with no tour. If you've seen one tour, they're very much similar-- so let's get to the port!! You can also do just wine tastings too if you want something different. The tasting area is very nice. Very lounge like and they have free wifi. Just ask for the code. So sit and relax. Also I recommend getting some munchies to go with your tasting! A waitress will come bring you your order and explain what you have. You will also be provide with little cards that explain each of your tastings and what would pair well with them. Very nice touch- no guessing involved! Of course the port here was good. :) the art on the walls was fun to look at too. Very vintage. Great experience overall!! read more

Of all the port wine houses we visited, this was our favorite. Loved the atmosphere in the lobby where you could choose the type of tasting you wanted to experience, from novice to expert with levels in between. Cost was adjusted accordingly. And the pours are legit with 5 nice samples. They offer guided tours as well but I wanted to focus more on the tasting experience. So much wine, so little time..... Highly recommended. read more

Port tasting! Naturally, when you visit Porto you ought to visit a tasting room for this fortified wine. The cellars are located across the river and the larger cellars are very near each other. We were going to hit a few spots but the pours at Adriano Ramos are very generous that we decided to just have dinner after the wine tasting. The staff are helpful and gave useful information that helped us pick which bottles to buy. We brought home the Adriano Reserva and the white Reserva. Highly recommended! read more

Diego was fabulous! This is WAY better than the $130+ we spent to go to the Douro valley with someone who didn't know wine. The wine school has several short classes but we opted for the guided flights of wine. One got the 3 of red and I got the 5 of a mix of white and red. So good! A very good place to taste pretty wines and have a tour. They preserved their old sales office, so the tour starts there. Interesting stories about the history of the house and its founder who was very aggressive at marketing, e.g. using naked women in advertising. (In a catholic country...) The wines tasted far better than the other port we had. Very friendlyv staff. Tour plus wine tasting (2 glasses) is 6 Euro, a very good deal in my opinion. read more

If you're like me and you like to stay a low-key traveler instead of standing out as a flaming tourist, come here. I highly recommend Ramos Pinto over Sandeman's, Graham's and Taylor's. Yes, they're huge and famous, but they're also super touristy and packed to the rafters with tourists and it's not the authentic experience. I opted for a smaller winery to do my port tasting and I'm glad I did. I did a 12 euro tasting our where they take you around to the cellars and in and out of the facility and let you sample a glass of port and tawny. I didn't feel quite satisfied, so I paid another 15 euros to take part in their extended flight tasting. Holy cow. They brought out 5-6 glasses of their designated port wines and after downing 4 glasses in total (including the sample glasses on the previous tour), I just couldn't drink anymore. Port wine is STRONGGGGG. And it's such a subtle strong, it doesn't sneak up on you until you're 2-3 glasses in deep. DANGGGG. I've never had such a pleasant yet strong buzz like that. If I was in my 20s I probably would've kept chugging and either fallen into the river and/or thrown up on the cobblestone streets but since I can't behave that way into my 30s I calmly put my glass down and strategized on how I could escape the winery without being seriously judged for being a weaksauce. Had a great tour and tasting at Ramos Pinto. Their selections were definitely leaps and bounds better than the other port house we visited, Calem, whose wines were all horridly sweet. If you actually want to pick up a bottle of Ramos Pinto I think that the port house here in VN Gaia will give you a great value without trying too hard. We scoured the garrafeira's in Porto looking for the ones we wanted at a price that could beat the tasting room prices and came up short. (Maybe just cause we're dumb tourists, but hey.) Additionally, the story of Adriano Ramos Pinto and how he started the business was really fun. He was a real pimp and a great businessman. We did the tour at Ramos Pinto because we wanted a smaller group setting and this was perfect! Daniella was our tour guide (we did the 5:00 English tour) and she was great. We got a bit of history of the company which was so interesting and the stories are quite funny. Then we went to the cellar where we got some information about the making of port. Then to the tasting room where we got two full pours, one white and one tawny, both great. The young woman working at the shop was very informative and fun. 12€ for the tour and tasting. We had so much fun and so glad we chose this port house! Highly recommended, even by the member of our group who was a little reluctant to go! read more

The Ruby's were young but the tawnys were aged 10, 20 and 30 years. Seating is in very comfortable room with sofas or tables. read more
