Hiyashi Chuka (cold ramen, ham, seaweed, egg, lettuce & tomatoes)
Alexander Y.

The Hiyashi Chuka, consisting of cold ramen with ham, seaweed, egg, lettuce & tomatoes, is very refreshing in summer. Its more like a salad than noodle dish.

Okonomiyaki, chicken skewers

Came here with a deals.com.au voucher, around $84 for a 9 course banquet for 4 including sake. Ended up only 3 of us going, but we still made sure they served us for 4. The banquets consisted of: Miso soup - nice, but nothing special, included regular onion, which I thought was odd, Salad - avocado, lettuce, that glass seaweedy type stuff (wow I'm good at explaining foods I don't know the name of aren't I, haha), and a nice dressing (although it had a bit of a kick to it) Salmon Sashimi - really really good & fresh Takoyaki - on the small side, but cooked perfectly Fried Oysters - I love a fresh oyster, but not a massive fan of fried. Tonkatsu style crumb was nice and crunchy without being oily Gyoza - burnt, filling not too bad Okonomiyaki - I really liked it. Fellow diners found it a little undercooked. Chicken skewers - came with big chunks of onion, was OK, but seemed like they'd been sitting out a little. Green Tea Ice Cream - not a fan so I didn't eat it, but the chocolate wafer sticks were divine! Sake - offered cold or warm, we went cold. I didn't drink much. Service was really friendly, and food came out quick enough, but we weren't offering any drinks (to purchase or free water), so had to ask. Topping up of the water was a little slow. We also had to ask what some dishes were as it wasn't explained. I'm glad there was only 3 of us, as I would've left hungry if we had to share between 4. All in all, it was okay I guess. No rush to go back, but I'd give it another go if someone else suggested a bite on the run. Fun Fact: one of the walls is covered by a massive mirror. Do with this what you will (like stand in front and checking yourself out and adjusting your dress numerous times like of the very few other diners did)

Hakoya Ramen - Ebidon

Hakoya Ramen

Guys. This is the best char-siu I've ever had in my life. I…read morecould taste the char, the fire on the edges of the pork. It was appropriately fatty, but not all fat, you know? Now it's been over a year since I've had Totto (NYC, my favorite), and my tongue might be spoiled from eating bad ramen at like 5 places in Atlanta. But I am willing to say this was #1. Hakoya opened on the corner of a new "laneway" in the Upper West Side building (Lonsdale and Rose Lane) - it appears to have been open since November. There are 4 tables along the wall, with a bit of privacy from hanging dividers (noren?), as well as about 10 seats along a bar, which faces the kitchen. The menu is tight, as you should expect. I had my regular ramen order, spicy tonkatsu. You can choose your spicy - 1 pepper, 2, or 3. This nearly unnerved me and I had to ask the server for help on my decision. I played it safe and went with 2... I made the right choice. Balancing the two heats (spice and temperature), it's just enough to make you feel like you broke a sweat without actually breaking one. I always forget that the ramen being so hot makes the spice... well, spicier. A cold Sapporo kept me on the non-sweaty side of dinner. Between each seat are the accouterments you may need - soy, sesame, chili oil, garlic paste, pickled ginger - as well as wooden chopsticks (nice touch to match with the wooden spoon), napkins, and water jug and glasses. Easy. Every day there appears to be a happy hour, $4 for Sapporos between 3pm and 6pm. Highly recommend, and since I'm here for 2 weeks, I expect to be back!

Every time we asked them for something even ordering food they rolled their eyes! I literally had to get up to get everything that I want every time. The utensils were on the counter and they were standing right in front of it and they didn't even bother to move at least so I can get what I want. For the restroom they told that I have to leave my cellphone to get a key from them!!!! Horrible service. Food was very average. And didn't taste original at all!

There is an ample selection of items: a well stocked sushi takeaway section, a deli counter to choose your own bento and what I came to try, the ramen! There are a few udon and ramen choices: veg, chicken and pork (chasiu). I opted for the pork ramen (@ $12.50) and went upstairs to wait for my order. Less than 10 minutes later my mid-sized bowl of ramen arrived. Happily, all the right elements were in place for a satisfying bowl! A generous portion of egg noodles, several tender slices of pork, a creamy rich broth, bamboo shoots, seaweed, fishcake, green onions and roasted garlic. The serving size was perfect and however filling it was I could not help but to continue to slurp it down. Staff were friendly and attentive and the space was well accommodating. It was clean and well stocked. They cater to the NAB lunch crowd so the professionalism is well matched. Prices are reasonable and I walked away very happy with my meal. I recommend the spot for your next business lunch or casual outing. It is well situated near Southern Cross Station and Etihad Stadium.
