Had dinner in the restaurant the night before leaving and it was delicious. I had a very early flight and they have free fruit and coffee and pastries set out for the early birds to take with them which was so nice. Took me two minutes to walk across the street to the airport in the morning and they have a clearly marked path which was appreciated since I was traveling alone and it was dark still when I left. They also offered for me to take their luggage cart across the street to make it easier and said it was fine to just leave at the airport and they would collect it later.

THEY WERE THEN BANISHED TO THE SITTING ROOM TO EAT THEIR TAKEOUT. Again, nobody was allowed to bring a morsel of food into their bar that was NOT serving food. There was hardly anyone there!! Just not a warm first impression. We were exhausted and starving, and that was a dumb rule. The woman at the front desk was not particularly pleasant, and she was also the bartender. Our room was sub par, cigarette burns in the tub. No extra toilet paper in the room when we ran out. And the broken thermostat was blinking the whole stay, begging for a filter change...gross. The china was also dirty at breakfast. The only pluses I will give to this place: the sitting and dining rooms were decorated well and the OTHER staff (NOT the receptionist/bartender) were pleasant. This time I went rogue and paid for my own meal and was treated to a delicious braised beef dish and toffee pudding. Best meal I had on the whole trip was from a hotel and I still think about that braised beef. Oh yeah, the view is pretty good if you get a waterside view room. We didn't know until after we paid to park that, according to the front desk, the spots out front of the hotel that say 2 hour parking can be ignored and are able to be parked all night. Besides parking, everything else was great. Staff are very nice and we enjoyed our room. The view was also really nice of River Shannon. The hotel is a short walk to King John's castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, The Milk Market, and various bars and food. It's a great place to call home base for a few nights. "The heat isn't on," staff said, helpfully pressing buttons on a thermostat that wasn't connected to anything. Performance art, not hospitality. But the heat wasn't the worst part. One bed had exposed staples and metal pins embedded in the headboard - right where someone's head would rest. I took photos. Raised it with management. Their response? "That's not representative." Which is strange, considering every single room we booked had issues. What you're paying for here is a dated property clinging to its past reputation, hoping guests won't look too closely. Tour groups come and go. Independent travelers? We're disposable. The one saving grace: the bar and waitstaff. They were attentive, warm, and clearly doing their best in a place that doesn't deserve them. I tried to resolve this privately. Gave them chances. Gave them time. They offered a token refund and shrugged off everything else. So here's what I'll say to the next traveler considering this place: If you enjoy sweating through the night, sleeping near embedded hardware, and being told your experience didn't happen the way you say it did - book the Dunraven. The farmhouse sits in a rural field, surrounded by Thoroughbreds and miniature horses. I didn't see any obvious signs, so it's unclear if one can visit or get close to the animals. The farmhouse has been built up over the centuries, and the owners Niall and Gillian Ennis manage the entire operation. Niall's skills in the kitchen are superb, I would highly recommend a dinner date or a simple stay-cation here. Ireland's beautiful green is due to the misty, rainy weather, so do take care and watch your step on external stairs or paths that sometimes become slick and mossy. Our 2-bedroom suite was accessible from just outside the main building - it would be perfect for a small family. Don't leave without having a sip of the famous Irish Gin and tonic made with The Pig's Elbow gin and tonic, delicious!

I also brought proof of my insurance…read more However, because we did not purchase the specific insurance through Budget, we inquired a charge of 40 Eur. Furthermore, we supplied the contract, which states that we owe nothing at the hire desk, nor anything suggesting this charge. The desk clerk concurred but continued to state we owe the fee. What good is a contract if it is not honored? Lastly, the company charges you 90 Eur up front for petrol. Once you return the car, you get refunded the money if the tank is full. This also makes zero sense. Essentially we are all loaning the company 90 Eur for them invest/use as see fit/etc. I have booked many cars in Ireland and never had this experience. I would not recommend or use again.
