The WPA helped establish the canning plant in St. Cloud, Florida, where surplus meats, fruits, and vegetables were preserved for local use. The cannery remained in operation throughout the Great Depression before eventually falling into disrepair. In the 1990s, local teacher Mary Lee Powell and her students spearheaded a restoration project to save the historic building. In 2003, the original cannery was relocated to Peghorn Nature Park & Trails, where it has been preserved as a museum. A replica of the original 1930s cannery building was added to the park and serves as a community space available for rentals and includes a kitchen, restrooms, and office space. Today, Cannery Park has been transformed into a modern, inclusive recreational space featuring an ADA-accessible, all-inclusive children's playground, covered picnic pavilions, and park benches. The playground was designed by Landscape Structures, founded by Steve and Barb King, which is known for creating innovative, one-of-a-kind playgrounds across the country, including several in Florida. The playground includes wheelchair-accessible ramps, a Sway Fun Glider, climbing structures, a sensory dome, Braille and clock activity panels, slides, and more. The zipline looked especially fun. This was my first time visiting a Landscape Structures playground, and it is impressive. The thoughtful design goes far beyond traditional playground equipment, creating a space where children of all abilities can play, explore, and have fun together. A little more greenery and landscaping would have been nice but Cannery Park feels like the playground of the future.

It was very informational and neat to see a little piece of history. Once we were done there we got on the Bridge walkway. We did not realize how long the Park Trail was, which is 17 miles! We decided we are going to rent some bikes when it gets a little warmer and try our hand at finishing the path. However, we did walk some of it though, and it was beautiful. One side is targeted towards toddlers while the other is for bigger kids. We really like the small area, great for toddlers. It has a shorter, safer slide, small bridge and a baby swing. The older kid area features more tactical fun with climbing opponents and taller slides. A favorite for bigger children is the zip line as most parks don't feature this.

There are restrooms and several picnic type tables to sit at. The playground area was much larger then I expect it to be. Actually this park in the middle of a neighborhood is much larger than I thought. Has hours posted at 7am until 10pm and since it is dropped smack in the middle of a neighborhood I am sure they adhere to the times. Nice place to check out.

I felt like walking through a modern art museum. The garden sits under Orlando International airport flight path, so we heard planes passing overhead occasionally. It's just a minor distraction. Most fun activities in Orlando cost money, this sculpture garden is a refreshing exception. We were there in the early morning before weather turned hot. I can only imagine how spectacular it will look once the light projections are up after dark.

The trails wind through trees that would be awesome to climb. There are a few benches, tables and grills around the park. Although near the back of the park, there is what was once a nice fire pit. I still think this would be a neat place for a family an friends social event (party). There is a pavilion, a grill and a lot of open space to have a nice gathering. Ok it's a little hike to the outhouse, but I think it would be a fun time. And although in need of a little repair, it was nice to see the flagpole erected from an Eagle Scout project.

The park's unusual name dates back to the early 1900s and honors the local "peghorn" cattle, which were known for their distinctive peg-shaped wooden-looking horns. The park has a Cracker Village, which celebrates St. Cloud's pioneer history. In Florida, the term "cracker" refers to the state's early frontier settlers, particularly cattle ranchers and small farmers. The name is believed to come from the loud crack of the long leather whips these cow hunters used while herding free-range cattle across the Florida prairie. The Cracker Village serves as an open air museum filled with authentic historic buildings and exhibits from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Visitors can explore an old schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, cannery, and other restored structures that offer a glimpse back in time into the daily lives of Florida's early settlers. It's also an educational resource for school groups. Peghorn Nature Park amenities include restrooms, benches, picnic tables with umbrellas, a trailhead center, outdoor classroom, educational center, community gardens, a small playground, bike racks, and paved parking. This park offers Florida history, wildlife, and nature all for free. This was one of my favorite stops in St. Cloud. After exploring the historic village, I headed out to the nature preserve, where you can hike the Blue, Orange, and Green Trails. Several sections of the trails cross boardwalks that wind through nature where you can spot wildlife. During Halloween these boardwalks are transformed into a haunted trail, which sounds like a fun reason to come back.

Couldn't walk the trail if you tried, though you might have been able to swim it. It's about 40 minutes from my house and the trail is less then a mile anyone. They have an old schoolhouse, a cannery, and a blacksmith building on the premises, so that's pretty cool to see. Once in a while they host pioneer type days, which are fun, but yesterday's was really tiny. Only a couple venders. The blacksmith was there, someone talking about composting, and Shellie's Jellies (best jelly ever! Award winning, great flavors, my fav is the pineapple rum, but all of her jellies are bursting with flavor, except maybe the beauty berry, that one is a bit reserved) The best time of the year to go is Halloween (I'll have to go back and find my pics from last Halloween, insane). Entry is free during the day. Open Mon-Saturday. They have a fright night type of thing Halloween nights, they charge for that If you live close go to see the park often, quiet and relaxing. If you live a little further like me, at least go for Halloween! Oh, yes, the nature trail is now dry, they've cleaned it up, got rid of those horrible pallets, and cut back some of the vegetation so even my 80 year old mom felt comfortable walking through

It's always been, and still is, a lovely and peaceful park. Full of exploration, adventure, joy, with so many opportunities for so many types of events, get together, celebrations, etc. We reserved a multi-family sight and with support from the park staff we were able to use the group camp site that had a nice big bone fire ring, which is where we had our celebration. It's was just isolated enough from the rest of the park we were able to listen to music, talk, and go adventuring around a little bit. We're definitely coming back next year! This is the PERFECT park for a campfire, bone fire, lake swimming, and overnight camping.

I especially love the walking path that goes along the lake, and my daughter and I like to spot gators in the water or sunning themselves on land. Last time we were here we saw gators, raccoons, squirrels, the cutest wild bunnies and a variety of large & small birds including roseate spoonbills. During, the days it can be a quiet peaceful place to walk. In the summers and evenings it can get busy but it's such a large park it doesn't feel crowded. There is free always parking. You can see native plants and wild life as you stroll. The waters do have alligators so use caution.
