I came on a warm October afternoon to check out the nine-hole disc golf course. My first impression was a good one. This course is well maintained: manicured fairways, clean baskets and concrete tee pads. While none of the holes were much more than 300 feet from tee to pin, there were plenty of trees and shrubs to add a bit of challenge to your throws. The first four holes are just north of the parking lot as your drive in. The back five are tucked behind the monument, and offer a more secluded environment, complete with sweeping valley views in between some seriously tough shots -- especially hole seven, a real beast of a hole. As is the case with a lot of local courses, I spent much of my first round attempting to find the tee pads, a few of which aren't marked properly. This is easily fixed, however, so hopefully the local disc golf club has something in the works.

Overall really great park with a lot of options (especially for younger kids). All of the equipment is on sand, so make sure you plan accordingly for footwear. It was such a joy to be able to feel the Christmas spirit in this space. I love the skating ribbon too! There is so much to see and do in this park. A little under three miles and brings you to the top of a ridge for panoramic views, deep forestry and ends with an awesome "chute" trail. The trails were marked clearly and maintained. I felt very safe and had service the whole time. It's also dog friendly. Can't wait to return for more adventures.

We saw several deer and a fox on our last trip! Our favorite part has to be the small waterfall. We've camped here before as well, and we enjoyed our night. And yes, it's a wee bit creepy the first time you visit because you're surrounded by a spiraling forest that seems to be reaching out to grab you. For one, the park is old. Like almost 100 years old. And it's on the north outskirts of Omaha on top of and surrounding river bluffs. Two, it's big. It's easy to get lost in. Going along the hiking trails, you never know what you'll find around the next bend -- it could be nothing, or a raccoon, or a deer, or a turkey vulture, or teenagers smoking weed. There is also a nice patch of groomed grass at the crest of one of the hills at the main entrance of Hummel. You'll often find families hanging out barbecuing and kids playing on the nice jungle gym. You know, normal park activities. I come here for the disc golf. Hummel touts a magnificent and technical 18 hole course that winds through the woods, up and down the bluffs, with a little creek water hazard thrown in for good measure. All in all, Hummel has a lot to offer. It's a nice little day retreat from the city. Emphasis on day, because the place is absolutely horrifying at night.

There's a path where you can take a walk but we didn't go down it. We were content to sit and watch the view. There are informational panels but they aren't that clear as the weather has affected them. There are padlocks on the railing at the monument. I wish I had known so I could have brought one. I love the idea of the love padlocks. Some were quite old. It was nice to examine them and see the initials of people in love. The walls with the figures carved into them and the writings were interesting to see. Someone had defaced them it seems as we saw signs of a clean up. Sad that people would do that. I would like to return to sit and reflect more. And bring a padlock of love.
