I confess I've avoided Mike's over the years because his facility looks so nice compared to the…read moremany ramshackle garages I see in the area. "Pretty" costs money so I've assumed he's expensive. I didn't have a lot of choice this time. My wife drove my car with no coolant (she hit a raccoon which burst the radiator). The smoking happened close to Mike's so there it went. While he looked at the damage, I went home and did some research online to get an idea of what this should cost. I also knew of some other issues with my car and had previously got repair estimates for them. Mike's estimate for the radiator damage was as low as I could find online anywhere in Canada (and the US when you convert to loonies). When, not to my surprise, it was determined I had a blown head-gasket - costing around $600, and that there may be more heat damaged yet to be determined, Mike got creative. Rather than fix the gasket only to find a cracked cylinder or some-such, he sourced a whole replacement engine which cost ...$600. I knew I had a couple of broken springs in the back which was not lost on Mike. I had gotten a quote from Midas in Ontario to fix just one of these - around $1500. Mike replaced both for a couple of hundred bucks. The air conditioning condenser took some racoon damage too and looked quite bad. He could have declared it non-serviceable and I would not have known any different. He didn't. He advised me it would still work and it does. I did my homework. I didn't tell Mike that I knew more than I was letting on. Ultimately I came out of this a bit poorer but satisfied that I would be hard pressed to have gotten off cheaper anywhere else. After reviewing the costs for parts and labour, I concluded that his pricing was very competitive. So the reason he looks awash in money is probably because he is - not by gouging, but rather by earning good will that keeps customers coming back. Give him a chance. I hope your experience doing business with Mike is as positive as mine was.
