He pays attention to all the students and gives a lot of corrections which I really appreciate. The members there are also all so friendly and love learning. You'll meet a lot of cool people there! Also want to say that Russ puts a lot of thought into the curriculum. He sends out a monthly newsletter and tells you what the focus will be each week. He plans out a series of moves in different positions on the mat from standing to submissions so that you can get the most out of rolling. At other gyms you can sometimes feel like you are coming in and doing a random move and can't connect the things you're learning into your BJJ game during rolling. But his curriculum and teaching method allows you to apply the moves. Besides the curriculum, within each class he reviews the previous moves we've done throughout the week lets us drill it then there's dedicated practice time for the move of the day. This learning method is super helpful because there is constant review. It's easy to forget moves when you're doing random moves only every couple of weeks at other gyms Rolling at Ground Rules is also the most fun out of all the other gyms. We often start from standing which a lot of BJJ gyms don't focus on but it allows you to practice takedowns before going to the mat. The white belts here are completely diff from other white belts are other gyms you can tell that they are learning fast and are able to roll effectively with the technique they've learned due to the curriculum and series of moves that he teaches. Memberships are flexible month to month and they don't lock you into a 1 year membership. Maybe I'm just traumatized from another gym lol but I really think that a passionate and a people oriented instructor is the person you want to learn from.

VIP MMA in Pleasanton is a small place, but it has allowed for more one on one and personal training. I've only been going for about one month and taking Muay Thai classes. The trainer Steve has taken the time to go step by step in teaching the basics of Muay Thai. Since the beginner classes are on the smaller side, he is able to watch me individually and critique and correct my movements. Something I know doesn't happen in most classes. The schools seems very family oriented and everyone there is helpful and friendly. There is no ostracizing or cliques. The classes are fast paced, are a good workout, and I leave each one feeling like I've improved and learned something new.
