He hung up on me and then lied on patient portal that I hung up on him, also saying "he hoped I would call back". So unprofessional! No one reached out to me on complete report. No arrangement for continuity of care was arranged -- this is abandonment and a suable offense. I was just left hanging. Dr. Barry Kaplan is no better. They are not human at Queens Medical Associates. It's just a cancer treatment factory that is archaic and only cares about their bottom line profit. Swaika all you had to do is apologize but instead you have HURT me and caused me inordinate stress on top of all the hurt others in the medical profession have caused me. When you get to the front desk, all the workers are just huddled chatting about nonsense while one person is checking patients in. When the nurse took me back to the patient room to meet with my doctor, I noticed that they leave the doors open when dealing with patients and talking to us. I had to ask her to close my door when discussing my business. In my appointment, which was on a Friday, I was told that I needed iron IV treatments and that I would be called the following week to schedule my appointments. I waited and waited and no phone call. So on the following Monday I called them to ask about this IV treatment I need because I'm 29 weeks pregnant so it's important I get the ball rolling on this. Surprisingly someone picked up! And I start explaining to her that I was supposed to receive a phone call and I didn't. She gets my DOB and sees my chart and says "oh yeah you're approved, let's get you scheduled. He actually wanted you to come in today." WHEN WERE YOU PEOPLE GONNA CALL ME TO TELL ME THAT THESE TREATMENTS WERE APPROVED BY MY INSURANCE AND I WAS SUPPOSED START RIGHT AWAY?! So had I not called, no one would've called me to make this appointment. I found that very irritating. Especially since I need these treatments for my health and the health of my baby. On top of the fact that I'm always tired because of my low iron so these treatments could help me.

My wife was diagnosed with Stage 1, Grade 3, triple-positive breast cancer, and we have been…read morereceiving treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering for the past several months. We initially chose MSK because the cold cap treatment was covered by our insurance, and we expected the high level of care and coordination that a world-renowned cancer center is known for. Unfortunately, our experience has been extremely disappointing. The biggest issue is that the facility appears to be severely understaffed. It is not uncommon to arrive early for an appointment and then wait anywhere from two to four hours before being seen. Communication between the nursing staff, clerical staff, physicians, and schedulers has been poor, creating confusion and unnecessary stress for patients and their families. We travel from Manorville for these appointments, and the lack of organization has made an already difficult situation even harder. My wife has completed chemotherapy and now only receives Herceptin injections, yet we continue to experience excessive delays. On one occasion, we received a text message informing us that the office was running three hours behind schedule. My wife is a nurse and repeatedly had to advocate for her own care. Before one of her surgeries, she had to request basic preoperative lab work herself. Patients should not have to push for what they believe are standard evaluations, especially at a world-class cancer center. Several incidents seriously undermined our confidence in the quality of care being provided. My wife experienced symptoms concerning for a pulmonary embolism, yet it took approximately 36 hours to fully evaluate and rule it out. We were also left seeking outside diagnostic testing to evaluate potential heart-related complications rather than having those concerns proactively addressed. Following her port placement, retained stitches were left behind and had to be removed. During cold cap treatments, obtaining pain medication became a frustrating struggle rather than a routine discussion about patient comfort. One of the most concerning experiences involved my wife's laboratory results. She noticed significant changes in her lab values and expressed concern to the nursing staff. Those concerns were dismissed. Two days later, she was nearly septic from an infection that required medical attention. While not every complication can be prevented, concerns from actively treated cancer patients should never be casually dismissed. Communication regarding pathology, biopsy results, and treatment updates was equally disappointing. We were often left reviewing reports through the patient portal without a call or explanation from a provider. No patient should have to interpret complex medical findings on their own while undergoing cancer treatment. The only consistently positive part of our experience was the PCTs and nursing assistants. They appeared overworked and understaffed, yet they were often the kindest and most compassionate people we encountered. Unfortunately, our experience with many infusion nurses was very different. Nurses frequently entered the room, hung medications, and left without introducing themselves or explaining what medications were being administered or why. Patients deserve to understand the treatments they are receiving. We also became frustrated with what felt like a rigid, protocol-driven approach to treatment. Decisions appeared to be based almost exclusively on a single clinical trial, while other studies and treatment discussions raised by my wife were routinely dismissed. We expected a more personalized approach that considered her specific history, symptoms, treatment response, and concerns. To make matters worse, we were incorrectly billed approximately $12,000 due to an administrative error. While the issue was eventually corrected, it created significant and unnecessary stress during an already overwhelming time. What was most upsetting was the attitude of some of the staff. The nurse manager was extremely rude, and the charge nurse came across as cold, dismissive, and unapproachable. When patients are battling cancer, compassion and communication matter just as much as medical treatment. MSK may have an outstanding reputation, but our experience was marked by poor communication, excessive wait times, lack of coordination, billing errors, dismissive attitudes, and a disappointing lack of individualized care. Cancer patients and their families are already carrying an enormous burden. They deserve timely care, proactive communication, and confidence that their concerns are being taken seriously. Based on our experience, I wish I could give this place zero stars.

Compassionate, understanding and goes over and beyond for patient care. I'm really not just saying this, he is truly incredible. Dr. Horkheimer received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin. He completed his residency at Washington University-Barnes/Jewish Hospital in internal medicine and conducted his fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center in hematology and medical oncology.

He was patient, informative and has a fantastic bedside manner. I was a mess at the time and he looked past it and helped to settle my nerves. As for the staff, you had some good and some bad. Most of the nurses are great. The woman who make the appointments were always helpful as well. Once and a while I had or saw someone else have some trouble with a particular girl at the front desk. I also had some issues with a couple of the woman giving transfusions. For one they would barely introduce themselves and then Im hard to stick and they would make it obvious when they were annoyed. These things make an uncomfortable situation worse. I add this in because no matter how great a doctor is he is only as good as his staff will allow. Overall my experience here was a 7 out of 10 and if I had any problems I would go back without hesitation.

Clear, patient and compassionate, they have guided me through my treatments without once forgetting my humanity. Yes, sometimes you need to wait an extra 10-15 for your appointment time, but this is a cancer hospital not a restaurant. If someone sick needs a little more time with your doctor so be it. It will be your turn to need the extra 20 minutes at some point. We are blessed in central NJ to have such an incredible medical facility right here. There's nowhere else I would ever go.

Also, every time I go, the secretaries tell me that my appointment is a different day/time. EVERY TIME I GO! So then I am left with waiting 1.5 hours for a bus ride home, for I cannot drive. They are unorganized, so I stopped going there and switched to Stony Brook Hospital Hematologists. I first tried seeing Dr. Yelda Nouri. She quickly stated something briefly. Then she rushed me out the door. I tried to ask some questions. She replied in about five words. Then she left the room to make more money by seeing more patients. She does not care about patient's health; works only for money. Dr. Nawaz is brilliant and kind, yet runs 45-60 minutes late. The Patchogue location has poor quality sensors for the water to turn on in the restrooms. The water turned on for only one second, off four seconds; on again for one second; then no more water at all from the faucet. I have never experienced such poor water sensors before. I almost began to bleed caused by so-called blood specialists. They seem to have no idea what causes eczema. My fingers within two minutes became cracked, peeling and almost bleeding from this location. Patients with eczema, beware. In general, NY Cancer and Blood Specialists has some good doctors, some not so good, and the quality of everything else is poor.
