I love this arcade because it is amazing what neat, smaller, old fashioned shops that you discover down here. I also love it because it reminds me of Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter, fantasy novel series. Apparently Cardiff is known for being the city of arcades representing perhaps the only images left that tell us of the wonderful and interesting history of the Victorian and the Edwardian heritage. It was in 1858 when the Royal Arcade in Cardiff's city centre was built; before that the 1790s only beheld twenty five retail shops known as 'market stalls.'

The chocolates are exquisite, but with a price tag to match, and so I have only ever bought them as gifts for other people, munching out on the less expensive, ubiquitous mass produced Belgian chocolate when I have a chocolate attack. I think that this is probably what most commonly occurs. With a selection of modern gift boxes, which are all finished off with presentation ribbons by the staff, it's clear that the gift option is a popular one. (This doesn't mean to say that it's not possible to prize the box open and snaffle a couple before you present them, somewhat apologetically, to their intended owner. And, this way you can announce with authority, as you hand the goods over, that the contents of their gift are really very good!) The shop also stocks soft drinks and a few lower cost items, like cake, that you can eat in at the tables provided. They also do great ice creams. I guess it is the sale of this kind of stuff that subsidises the chocolates, and justifies having such a large retail space, (otherwise there would be no point, and it certainly wouldn't be affordable).

For example I once asked how much they pay for standard Lego Mini-figures, they offered me 10p each, when they sold them at £1 each. This may be due to more local competition opening up. I can't imagine it's very easy for them with two large chains nearby Some of the staff here are quite friendly while others can come across as quite rude. Specialists in sugarcraft and cake decorating supplies, this shop mainly caters for professional cake decorators, confectioners and educational establishments, (local teachers can benefit from a sale or return service for their classes with discounts available). Although wholesaling is a large part of the business, they also welcome retail customers. Many of the staff are cake decorators themselves, and so are well placed to advise any budding amateurs that pay them a visit. I know that's little basic but it works and this one is certainly not as highly priced as Spar and other alternatives. I wouldn't expect it to last too much longer as the modernising of the Hayes area engulfs all and sundry with its power. But enjoy this place and the convenience it provides while it lasts as it's the most well placed newsagents in town.

We all know you get this stuff online cheaper but if you want something right away you will have to pay more for it here. That being said this HMV has 3 floors full of choices and cover lots of different genre's. I generally find the staff really approachable and helpful and will help you find what your looking for. Everything is still quite crammed though so expect to be bumping into people when its busy.

It is a great independant shop, they have a wide range of books downstairs from fiction, to non fiction and childrens books, the prices are sometimes a little high but they have some reduced prices. The best thing about hurleys is definitley the toy shop, it takes up the whole upstairs of the shop and has pretty much every toy imagineable, from dolls to trikes and board games to pre-school toys such as the night garden and teletubbie toys. My daughter adores this shop and would stay in here all day if she could! Well worth a visit
