You can customize your own pasta/pizza for about $6 through a paper form at that station. You ask how can a hospital cafeteria get five stars? The answer is a combination of a selection of good, healthy, affordable food in a pleasant atmosphere with friendly helpful people. If you're here, it's likely you're here for a not so happy reason. This is a great oasis from the troubles that brought you here. You wonder how they manage to fit this variety of foods in such a small space! I think there's something for everyone especially kids. First, there's a salad bar, always fresh and an decent selection. Then there's the grill where you can get burgers, fries, corndogs, grilled cheese, etc. There's always a grill special and a side dish that varies daily from chicken nuggets, jalapeño poppers, zucchini coins, and the never before seen potato muncher. It's basically a finely breaded smashed tater tot with a a bit of cheese inside. This thing stays incredibly hot for a long time so don't burn yourself. Then there are the entree tables, usually three different entrees and sides which change daily as well. Complementing the main stations are mini stations of soups, hot dogs, nachos, soft serve ice cream, dairy case, snack rack from Nutty Guys and the all important donut case filled with Banbury Cross donuts. I've seen it many times on faces of parents knowing that they can find something for them and theirs kids in tow that won't break the bank. One less thing to worry about. I hope you visit this place because it's good but if you have to be here, I'm sorry and hope for a speedy recovery but rest easy you'll have a good meal. If you call their daily menu line 801-662-1422 and get the guy, you're in for a treat, it's dumb humor but it will put a smile on your face and you'll hit redial to hear it again. I'm glad they're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Don't forget to check out the Park Cafe off the side, they have really affordable made to order sandwiches for $3.50 and they're huge. My go-to for weekday work lunches. The University of Utah cafeteria is significantly more expensive and the food isn't as good anyway! The Rainbow Café at the Primary Children's Hospital has a great daily selection. Generally is breaks down into: Salad, two entrée selections (one healthy one regular), and one specialty grill item. In addition, there are several pre-packaged salad and sandwich choices, which is nice to grab and go. Fresh fruit, fresh veggies pre-packaged make it easier to choose healthy options. Always two soup options and fresh rolls too. The grill is good, especially for the money! Cheeseburger $2.49 and grilled ham and cheese $1.65.... you really can't beat that. They also have veggie burgers and a daily special. Some of my favorites here include Pork Lettuce Wraps (served with fresh mango and sticky rice) for around $5, Asian Noodle Salad with a fresh cilantro and peanut dressing (w/ pork for $5), Pesto Grilled Cheese w/ Tomato and side salad, any Salmon dish, Chef Salad,.... **GET THE SCOTCHAROOS** (peanut butter rice krispie with chocolate/butterscotch icing) Actually, get 2, you'll be happy you did! read more

For food from a hospital cafeteria it's good. I have had better ,but it's better than nothing. I did appreciate the prices. They are descent and doable. I don't work here so it's not a place that I would frequent. The chit chat with the employees was way annoying every time I came down to eat. Some thing I am just not in the mood to listen to. An older man kept talking to another employee who was Hispanic, with a very rude accent. I came cuz I was hungry and had a sick kid in the hospital and didn't want to leave him. read more

Here's what makes this place great- it's affordable. You can have a really filling meal for 5 bucks and there's tons of options. The serve burgers, salads, and they have daily cooked meals and sides too. The food isn't always the most delicious food on the planet but it's definitely not bad either. I was really, really impressed with this cafeteria. The hot entree selections were healthy and delicious and plenty of veggies for sides. I couldn't believe how cheap everything was, either. I paid $4 for a chicken breast and pasta with a basil cream sauce. My son opted for a grilled cheese and potato munchers. They have a huge variety of things to eat and drink. Am I really reviewing a hospital cafeteria? Why yes I am and I really don't care that you may think less of me. The selection that they offer is some of the best around and beats many sandwich shops or any other lunch establishment. I have had a cranberry turkey wrap and loved it! The flavors are something you would expect to pay close to $10 for but at more than half that you are in for a treat. I would literally come here just to eat. Can a hospital cafeteria have good food? We just ate at the Rainbow Cafe inside Primary Children's Hospital and it was the worst food we've ever had!!!! Awful!!! I got a Burger and Fries, and the Burger tasted strange and awful, like rotted mystery meat, and one bite of the Burger had a hard white chunk that looked like bone when I had to spit it out. The Burger made me sick for the rest of the day and I'm still sick now. I'm going to be suffering for this mistake. I had to throw up after eating that Burger! The employees at the grill cooking don't speak English and they talk to each other and ignore the customers, while the mean Bitchy cashier ignores customers and talks to other employees at the tables where the customers are supposed to be sitting. The table we got was broken and was wobbling. The entire cafeteria obviously has no management and no one taking care of it. Whoever runs the place needs to have one of those Burgers so they can get sick all night. - I'm calling the Health Department or some other government agency. DO NOT EAT AT RAINBOW CAFE!!! First and foremost, I don't know why anyone in their right mind would venture to a children's hospital to try the cafeteria food. I was honestly befuddled when I opened my Yelp app at work and saw that a whopping 14 people had reviewed our humble cafeteria.... 14!!! And yet, I am no better. So let's make it 15 my fellow Yelpers. I've given a 3-star rating for the ONLY 2 things the rainbow cafe has going for it. 1- The very friendly & helpful staff. (They deserve 5 stars) 2- The mozzarella sticks. (Not half bad) EVERY other thing is almost unbearable... And yet, at the end of my 10 hour shift, I find myself consuming it. I'm not here to compare the rainbow cafe to any number of restaurants I've reviewed (check them out on my profile) but to simply review it, for what it is. Thoroughly impressed with this hospital cafeteria food. After reading great reviews from fellow yelpers, I took my gf there to try it out. I love the prices, and their selection is pretty good. Not too vegetarian friendly aside from the garden burger and grilled cheese, but it did the job. I tried the chicken nuggets, which were delicious. Not excessive breading, good amount of meat, and the large was only $3.50. Grilled cheese with tomato $1.50. Cheap drinks. Large fry I think was like $1.75. One of their "specials" was a taco salad, my gf got it w/o meat and it looked good but she said it was just ok. Only $5. Total for 2 people lunch, about $12. Not bad at all. Oh and their sweet and sour sauce was tasty, somehow better than Wendy's... I'll be back to try more epic hospital food. P.S. parking wise I was worried I'd have to pay but the guy just let me in when I said we wanted to eat at Rainbow café, and he gave me a parking pass and said just don't park on level 1. Sweet. The chicken nuggets are quite litterally to die for. I work at the U hospital and visit the Rainbow very frequently. Their salmon is very good and anything they have with coconut is amazing. The soups ars very delicious as well, especially the chicken noodle and sweet potato sausage. They are open till 2am and have a strong following. You can even call (801) 662-1422 for an automated menu for what they're serving. I love this place!!!! read more

Hospital food isn't usually too great but Primary has some really good options and they are very affordable. In the ice cream area there is also a build your own salad and sandwich bar and the ingredients are always fresh and even a small side salad is packed full of goodness. They also have different hot entree options every day and a complete meal is around $4 or $5. If you are at the University Hospital it's definitely worth the walk over to Primary for the cafeteria. read more

Cheap, delicious food. If you have to be in a hospital, this is the place to get food. (As in, completely makes sense to walk over here from the U!) Chicken nuggets are my absolute favorite- whenever they have them there, I'll get "take-out" and bring nuggets home for dinner. Oh and don't even get me started on breakfast. Mondays and Fridays are breakfast burrito days- mmmm- yummay! And Tuesdays are blueberry pancakes with buttermilk syrup- and I call that stuff "crack" syrup for a reason. Seriously addicting. Clean, cheap, and relatively healthier food selections! Keep in mind that this is hospital cafeteria food, you can't really compare the taste with restaurants...but really, most of the food I got there tasted from okay to great - I am a fan of their vietnamese salad and Classic Roast Turkey Breast, but not their Salmon & Tomato Vinaigrette...either way, I actually get healthy diet by having their LiVe Well meal with less than $6. Sometimes, I only get two sides as lunch (most of the sides are $0.79 only) --- very good value! read more

Like another spot that has a lot of fairly glowing reviews on Yelp, I somehow seem to manage to arrive at times when the experience is drastically different and not in a positive direction. In this case, I went there twice, with the last visit being the final one ever. The first time, their special, what was left of it, was not something that looked or sounded palatable to me, so I went for a grill burger. I was truly not expecting much, considering the cafeteria style set-up and so when I got a burger that is what I consider an "institutional burger", meaning a patty probably frozen but definitely tasting of filler, I wasn't too surprised. Fries were ok and they had an otherwise decent selection in the many coolers and displays packing the place. The second time I went because I had understood they had some sort of special Thanksgiving-type themed thing. We must have gotten there too late, because they were out completely of anything remotely oriented like that. So, once again, back to the grill for another filler burger, this time with bacon. I reasoned it wasn't so bad since I figured then it would be the very last time. Something was wrong with the fryer, so no fries, just chips. Something must have also been wrong with the grill because my bacon was nearly in-edibly undercooked. So, the decor is fairly inviting, considering what it is. The decor is pretty good, especially the hall murals and the place is clean. Pricing isn't too bad, overall, but in relation to the actual value in retrospect, seems off somewhat. Fries, as noted, were good and everyone there is generally very nice and friendly. The selection, as well and as observed, is also decent for items that don't go through the actual kitchen, but I found the burgers to be one step from atrocity. Prices are good. Food is OK. 4 stars it is not. The parking was awful. I've eaten my fair share of hospital food so I somewhat knew what I was getting into. Bottom line; If you want an affordable meal with no atmosphere and little seasoning you will be delighted. read more
