Ahhhh, Goteborg. Such a beautiful little city! We were fortunate enough to be able to ring in the New Year in this Swedish gem of a town, and it didn't disappoint. The Radisson Blu is centrally located within Goteborg, within a moments walking distance of absolutely everything, and turned out to be a wonderful, cozy hub for us.
I booked a family room in advance for the trip, and having read the other reviews on here I made sure to email ahead to state that an indoor room (overlooking the atrium with no real window to the outside world) wouldn't be acceptable. Perhaps I went a little far in exploiting my husband's asthma for the cause, but it was important to me that I didn't spend all my indoor hours looking into a lobby. They came through and gave us a room with a real, live window outside. Success!
The room itself was spacious and clean. The décor is Ikea meets 1980's Boy George, complete with punches of neon box lighting on the headboard. I wanted to put my hair in a side ponytail and stuff my trouser bottoms into my socks, but I was traveling with my nearly 13-year old daughter and I took her propensity to get embarrassed into account. If I was alone I'd have bought scrunchies, peace sign earrings, and my own hairdryer (the one provided is too weak to style proper peacock bangs). Then I'd have rocked steady, steady rockin' all night long.
Or maybe not.
But maybe.
Despite its quirkiness, the room was actually pretty nice. The family room is a king bed with an additional sofa bed, which worked out perfectly. I'd have really liked it if the sofa bed had been folded back up by housekeeping when they came in the mornings. It would have been much nicer to have a sofa and seating area during the day and afternoons, as opposed to it being a bed the whole time.
The breakfast at the Radisson Blu is fantastic. The best of the best. It's rows and rows of hot, cold, breaded, juiced, and pickled...really, anything you want in both traditional Scandinavian fare and continental favourites. Anyone who complains about the breakfast--I have to question their sanity. It will knock your socks off.
I chose the Radisson Blu Scandinavia over the other hotels in the area for one solitary reason: it had a gym with an indoor pool. This amenity tends to be non-negotiable with the husband. He loved the gym and my daughter enjoyed the pool. A tad on the busy/crowded/splashing kids everyday side, but I don't fault the hotel for that. It was a great pool area, heated, while it was -4c outside. OF COURSE all the kids were in there...just like mine was.
My only real complaint (aside from the sofabed) is that it's difficult to pre-pay before arrival. I like to go on holiday and know all the big stuff is handled. It would be nice if there was an easy way to do this before you get there, aside from their back-and-forth, archaic faxing of authorizations and email follow-ups. That is seriously outdated (and this is coming from someone who actually thought the 1980's décor was fun).
Would I go back? Definitely. Not only that, I'm likely to seek out a Radisson Blu when traveling to other cities as well. read more
