I chose Dr. Varley for my LASIK surgery, and I couldn't be more glad that I did! In fact, I wish…read moreI'd done it years before. Dr. Varley is expensive, but you get what you paid for. He is very personable, and his staff is professional and nice. I felt comfortable from the very beginning, and never doubted my decision. He came recommended to me by two medical doctor friends, who both swear he is the best. My vision went from not being able to see my hand in front of my face to 20/15 with improved night vision. Dr. Varley is amazing -- don't go anywhere else!!

At the ripe old age of eighteen years old I had Lasik Vision Correction. Many eye surgeons in the…read moreCincinnati area wouldn't take me as a patient because of my young age (though my vision had been stable for more than five years), but after an extensive exam and questioning process; Dr. Varley of the Cincinnati Eye Institute agreed to perform the vision correction. Dr. Varley is personable and accomplished; I have a major fear of doctors and he put me at ease. The Lasik procedure itself is pretty simple, it only takes a few minutes from start to finish, but it's pretty scary in thought...the doctors actually cut into your eyeball using lasers. Patients are given a "laughing gas" sort of medication to calm and are then led to the surgery room, where eyes are completely numb. From there, Dr. Varley walks his patients through each step of the process. The scariest part for me was when he said, "Ok, you're going to be blind in this eye for a few seconds." I freaked, but Dr. Varley counted back from ten and as soon as he hit "zero," I could see again-and clearly! After the procedure I was required to wear goggles for a few weeks and I couldn't touch/rub my eyes for a few months, but my vision was perfect from the second the medication wore off. Now, more than three years later, my vision is still a perfect 20/20. I still visit Dr. Varley's office once a year for check-ups, and each time I thank him for getting rid of my glasses and contacts forever!

There's a reason why Midwest Eye Center, Cincinnati, OH does not have a patient review portal. Dr…read more Maryam Naqvi performed routine cataract surgery on my husband in May, 2025 at the Kenwood office. It was anything but routine, as she inserted another patient's lens into his eye, which was discovered during his 1week follow-up visit. She completed the replacement procedure for the wrong lens, but his cornea was scratched & iris torn during the process. A Midwest Eye Center Director performed emergency surgery later that day to avoid infection of the eye; and was under the Director's care for the next few weeks to monitor his eye healing. My husband is currently under care with different eye specialists as he slowly recovers. As Dr. Naqvi smiles confidently from the front cover of Cincinnati Magazine's 'Cincinnati Top Doctors' and on its pages. One has to wonder how she can be deemed "the best" having compromised her patient's well-being through a poorly mismanaged process of care.

Dr. Szmyd specializes in eye exams and surgery for the little ones. She has a long history of correcting pesky eye problems in children. When I was very little, Dr. Szmyd operated on my right eye repairing some of the muscles below the eye. Now I can't say that I remember the surgery because I was very little, but it was the first step of many that she took to correct my lazy eye. Over the next 10 years, Dr. Szmyd worked with patches, glasses, and eye exercised to successfully correct my lazy eye. I still wear glasses due to some farsightedness, but now that eye is the least of my worries. Dr. Szmyd is so kind and gentle. I've always been afraid of eye drops and she always calmed me down and went slowly so it wasn't as bad. She really is great with kids. Dr. Szmyd is located just off Kenwood Road Her office is extremely kid friendly with lots of toys and building blocks in the waiting room. Inside the examination room she has teddy bears and toys stashed in various corners of the room that she has the patient focus on for different aspects of the exam. At one point she also plays portions of Disney movies on the television below the eye chart to distract the children. Then, when it's all over, the kid gets a yummy popsicle.
