I like Habitat, don't get me wrong, but really, why bother when you can get good quality furniture for much less. Especially if you are a student! Which is perfect for this area. Flocks of students come and go through Leeds, moving every year and needing to get rid of or attain furniture every time they do. Junk Again are aware of this and have cleverly positioned themselves not far from the postcodes that are predominantly student populated. If you are looking for a cabinet, a table, or arm chair, or are looking to get rid of, a fridge, a freezer, or chimney pot, Junk Again is a great place to go. They are slightly chaotic but that just adds to that old fashioned feel of shops of this type. Plus no-one will look down their polished nose at you as they so often do in Habitat.

That, sadly, was not the case in the end but that's more to do with the Estate Agent and building than anything else. However, pretty much the only thing that we required for our move was a sofa and some arm chairs. Enter: Junk Again! My old housemate had spotted Junk Again on her way through Woodhouse and suggested that we tried here for a cheap second hand suite. I was game for any bargain and so when she called me, all a fluster, to tell me about this awesome sofa, two arm chairs and a pouffe for a mere £40, I came immediately to the scene. Yes. That's right. All that for forty flippin' pounds. The friendly chap explained that he had planned to have them cleaned but hadn't yet, so was willing to let them go for that much - all we needed to do was clean them. No probs, Handy Hire in Headingley solved that one for us dirt cheap too! We couldn't have been more chuffed. Inside you'll find an array of lovely old furniture and the odd antique, for seriously cheap prices. My advice is: if you're moving look here first. I've a few more things I need myself so I'm planning a re-visit very soon...

I get lost for hours in here when I make time to mooch and marvel at the retro 50's & 60's…read morefurniture and lighting that always takes me back to my days hanging around Greenwich or Camden market instead of being in school, and similarly eyeballing the 'precious things' of yesteryear. On my last visit I fell in love with a long, low teek sideboard, the style of which forms the epitome of what you will find in here. Sadly at £350 I found myself jokingly singing "Santa Baby put a table under the tree.. for me" to my nonplussed boyfriend! Still, my retro therapy was completed when I purchased a more reasonable, but no less beautiful classic 60's bright orange glass ashtray for £15. The lady that owns the shop was happy to stand chatting to me about items she usually gets in and whats popular at the moment, i found her to be an extremely friendly person with lots of knowledge, which also includes an almost wiki style base of information on how to restore your much loved vintage furniture! There really are not enough places like this in Manchester, and the ones that are mildly comparable mostly sell "retro" stock that was shipped in yesterday and made in a factory last week.

There are three floors of pre-war furniture, household objects, chandeliers, toys, medals, vintage jewellery and other collectibles. Over the years I've noticed the prices going up a little but it's still great value for money. The last time I went I came away with a beautiful vintage sewing box that I found amongst various ornaments and bric-á-brac. In the basement you'll find a café which does a mean weekend breakfast and serves good food throughout the day. The building itself is also noteworthy. Built in 1898, it was originally the Town Hall. The original mouldings and green tiles are still existence. The Antiques Village is a five minute walk from Levenshulme Station and a ten minute drive from Manchester City Centre.

Bit of a misnomer the name of this as it sells some very modern furniture in all styles and woods…read more Used to be owned by a lad called Chaddy who was a top lad, would always go out of his way to get that special piece for you. I went in recently and they have some cracking stuff in, some of it very expensive but you get what you pay for. It all looks like good quality hand made furniture. 2 yrs ago i kitted out my bedroom in furniture from here and paid over a grand for 3 matching pieces in pine. They were fantastic and they have survived me moving 3 times and are still as solid as the day they were delivered. I am not sure they are in the right place for what they are selling but it is definitely has a place in Shaw, in my eyes. If you like something different for any room in your house then Valley Antiques could well be worth a few minutes of your time.

Everytime I make a decision on what I want I come back in and the have even better versions than before. The staff here are fantastic and if you don't find what your looking for one week try again the next. The staff will keep an eye out for certain items if you have something special i mind i.e. a certain type of wooden flooring. More importantly they can and will advise you on what items work well together etc. Great little shop in a rather unexpected location!

Got a deal on them, too!!! There are so many "smalls" but if I were renovating a home or flat in the local area, this would be my first stop if I wanted to make the place have an industrial, yet historic flair to it. Mantels, sinks, doors, toilets...the works. Have spoken with what seems to be the owner (manager?) and a staff member. Both are lovely. Props to them for such a wonderful business.

My suede high street Pied a Terre classic black wedges from a branch of Office in London are likely to become a family heirloom, should I bear a daughter who ends up with size 5-6 feet. For me it is not about having something expensive, or famous-named. It's about how timeless it is. Well, that daughter, should she occur (and let's face it, should she have the same taste in shoes as me - who knows? She might prefer a pair of Caterpillars or Timberlands), will also be inheriting the absolute bargainous pieces of wonderment I found myself the lucky owner of a couple of Christmases ago... I'm there, browsing, when the name on an insole next door to me looks rather familiar. And this is such luck, people, seriously, the very definition of serendipity. I wouldn't have even been browsing Milner & Webb were it not for the sign by the antique phones that said, "For assistance, please go next door to Milner & Webb." I was looking at the phones as a gift for a family friend. Ginas. A pair of Ginas. Not so many years ago, I was stood, balls of my feet in agony, working in a designer shoe shop, selling these bad boys to women with vastly disposable incomes. I loved flogging the Ginas because they were £300-£500 a piece and my commission would be stonking. But I never liked them. Too blingy, too garish and far too Saturday night TV. But these vintage beauties next to me? Black. Strappy. That word again. Classic. That other one. Timeless. The price? £40. What I paid (oh thank you, early Christmas present!)? £35. And not only that, they knocked £20 off the antique phone I decided to get as a present for the family. Plus friendly service. Milner & Webb, we love you. We love you a ridiculous amount. Please, don't go anywhere.
