Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School is one of Glendale Unified School District's bigger elementary…read moreschools, but has the sense of community that you'd get a smaller school. The Principal is always hands-on, and helps with (a very efficient!) pick up and drop off line. If you call the school up, you may even get her answering phones. What makes VW extra special are the parent organizations. In addition to the PTA, VW has 2 more parent-based organizations - the WAVE Foundation and the Dad's Club. The PTA puts together school events like the book fair and school festivals. The WAVE Foundation raises money to support school programs like art, music, teacher resources, and taiko lessons. And finally the Dad's Club puts on fun events like Halloween Spooktacular maze+games, Father's Follies play, and many other social events for parents and families. The Dad's Club also lends the school space to use as a multi-purpose room. My daughter is in the Japanese Dual Language program here, where instruction for all subjects are 50% English and 50% Japanese. For example, the lastest lesson was on solids, liquids, and gasses - 固体、液体、気体. Kanji levels are the same as in Japan, and my daughter's English reading level is average or above, according to standardized tests. It's a win-win! The school offers Taiko drumming lessons and orchestra for 4th grade and older. It also has a robotic club, math club, and Student Council. Additionally, it partners with local education businesses to offer various before or after school classes such as computer programming, robotics, drawing, cooking, drama class, chess club, and so much more. Finally, what makes VW great are the Friday playdates at Verdugo Park. A lot of us go to the park after school and Fridays where parents mingle and chat while the kids play and do homework together (ok, homework is only sometimes, but still!) Educational enrichment and social engagement at VW is top notch, and I can't say enough good things about the education and environment.

If I could give this school 0 stars I would. I am extremely disappointed with this school. My child…read morehas been repeatedly singled out by his teacher in ways that are completely unacceptable. Instead of supporting him, the teacher made him feel isolated and embarrassed. I brought my concerns to the principal, hoping for leadership and solutions, but the response was dismissive and unhelpful, principal and teacher siding with each other. This was my child's first year at this school and I regret signing him up here even after reading the terrible ratings. Giving them the benefit of the doubt was the worst idea. I've never had an issue at his previous schools like I did here. A school should be a safe, supportive place for children -- not somewhere they are made to feel targeted with no accountability from the administration. I would not recommend this school to any parent who wants their child treated fairly and respectfully. There were a few staff members who were very kind so I'm not saying everyone was terrible but the lack of professionalism and compassion here is truly shocking. No wonder they are one of the worst rated and ranked schools in Glendale. Rated 4 out of 10 on great schools website. He's been pulled out of this school and we're never looking back.

Something needs to be said about Glen Oaks Elementary School…read more.. To all the staff helping with pickup -- the teachers, aides, cone crew -- please chill out a bit. This is an elementary school, not a prison yard. The energy out there feels tense for no reason. There's a lot of yelling, finger-pointing, and attitude. Kids are small. Parents are just trying to pick them up. It doesn't need to feel so aggressive every day. A smile goes a long way. A calm tone goes a long way. Instead of acting like wardens, try creating a space that actually feels safe and welcoming for the kids. And this isn't just about pickup -- it feels like a bigger issue with how some staff carry themselves. Having a degree or a position doesn't mean people owe you anything. Respect goes both ways. Hopefully the principal takes a look at this and reminds the team: lead with patience, not pressure. These are children. The environment should reflect that. This is an everyday occurrence and a sad experience

The parent organization goes out of their way to to support all children, especially the kids whose parents have to work and who cannot do everything the participating parents do altruistically. Without any hesitation, I give John Muir Elementary School 5 stars for the following reasons:…read more ~ Ms. Flinstone (kindergarten): She made learning SO much fun at such an early age. For example, when we read Green Eggs and Ham, she actually brought a camp stove to class and made us green eggs and ham! She was very creative with her teaching methods! ~ Ms. Carol (1st grade): Probably the sweetest teacher I've ever had. She too was very creative. I remember her taking us outside to collect leaves in order to inspire us to write our Haiku poems. She also played the piano during "sing-alongs" ~ Ms. Sagadencky (2nd): So much energy! She definitely taught me the difference between "Can I" and "May I" =) ~ Ms. Flint (3rd): We had a huge board and each student had an ice cream cone with their name on it. She would quiz us weekly on our multiplication tables, and if we passed, we'd receive a scoop of ice cream. Once our ice cream scoops reached the top of the board, she'd bring in actual popsicles as rewards. Sweet! Unfortunately, she was only our teacher for a few months because she left on maternity leave. ~Ms. Vigiano (4th): One day, we returned from our lunch break and Ms. Vigiano mentioned that there were golden nuggets hidden all over the classroom that we had to find. It was a nice touch to our "Gold Rush" lesson plan. ~ Ms. Warrick (5th): I gave this teacher hell. If you're reading this, I'm sorry! Ms. Warrick had the misfortune of dealing with me while I was going through my rebellious phase. ~ Mr.Thal (6th): Believe it or not, Mr. Thal was hearing impaired. He taught us as much as he could (including sign language which was awesome), but left because his hearing got much worse. ~ Mr.Ghazarian (6th): Everyone wanted to be in Mr.Ghazarian's class because he was the "cool" teacher. I had him for History and Science I believe, and he was a good teacher. I remember making a really awesome pyramid while we were covering Ancient Egypt. Besides the wonderful teachers, John Muir had the best book sales, Halloween carnivals, bake sales and field trips. I have kept in touch with many of my friends that I met at John Muir. Only con: Mrs. Avakian, the principal. She was a bitter and cold-hearted woman who only smiled or showed any kindness during award ceremonies or events where parents were present.

Attended this hellhole couple years ago have to say it was probably if not the worst experience a…read moreschool can give. Principals and yard staff are so obviously biased about punishing kids it's funny. The school does educate kids on academics but not to ever use a single ounce of their brain to clean up after themself. Some examples: 1. Bathroom had the fattest turd in it that a snobby kid left to not flush 2. Little gremlin kids slob around all the lunch tables I swear to whatever god is up there these kids cannot fathom how to actually be hygienic and keep the campus clean. Also, the school kind of looks like a prison. Theres barely any grass most of the campus is just asphalt it's so depressing. My favorite experiences were Science School (which you have to wait the entire time you are at the school for) and the teachers that are chill. To a student currently attending this school, I hope you enjoy or enjoyed pre-k to 3rd grade because everything in your life will crumble down to dust before meaninglessly blowing away into the wind. Kids will discover trends or stereotypes one way or another. And to the teachers that are actually chill I wish you the best in everything that comes to this school.
