    First National Bank - Waterloo

I strongly encourage anyone considering a bank to go anywhere but First National Bank of Waterloo…read more I would also encourage anyone banking with First National Bank of Waterloo to understand their ignorant and/or malicious policies. We recently had an unexpected family death. The spouse of the deceased was not notified of any account changes. First National Bank of Waterloo allowed money to go out of the account and did not allow money to go in. Again money was allowed out to pay bills but deposits were not allowed to come in. The spouse's own direct deposit from her current employer was denied deposit. On top of all of this, they never contacted her. They also took it upon themselves to deny social security without a death certificate. She found this out while looking at her online banking. When she went to the bank to discuss the issue, the First National Bank of Waterloo had the nerve to say they were trying to protect her. Yes, protect her, by not allowing any deposits, allowing money to be taken out and by not notifying her of their brilliant safeguards. Words cannot express my disappointment in First National Bank of Waterloo and their policies. I pray that anyone facing a similar tragedy does not have to experience this unnecessary stress.

The first Board of directors included Bollinger, Pautler, H.C. Voris, John J. Koenigsmark, Ernst W. Loehr, A.C. Rexroth, Thomas Ruch, and Louis Stumpf. Thus began the First National Bank of Waterloo with total deposits of $26,625. Today First National Bank has total assets of approximately $440 million. The bank has always been a leader in the banking community with a dedicated staff and Board of Directors. The tradition started in 1912 continues today. First National Bank is still locally owned and dedicated to providing financial support for our community's progress, building one-on-one relationships with our customers and committing time and leadership to local civic and charitable organizations.

I regret my decision to open an account with First Community more than any other business-related decision I can think of, with the possible exception of that time I signed up for Vodafone internet service while in Germany. Their services have made my life miserable. I am constantly in a position where I go to use my card and suddenly it doesn't work. Often the reason will be that a couple of subscriptions removed their monthly ten-dollar fee, and that was flagged as suspicious. It then falls on me to investigate and fix everything. After recently purchasing a plane ticket to Vietnam as well as travel insurance, I filled out a lengthy visa application and tried to pay the amount of $50. From where I live in Missouri. Not $500, and not inside of Vietnam. $50. From the visa website of the Vietnamese government. Naturally, the payment was rejected by the bank, just like my monthly subscriptions are, just like my digital purchases of movies and books are. They act like it's not a big deal, but it is an enormous imposition. I plan on terminating my relationship with this outfit as soon as I can. In the case of my visa, after that one rejection, the website kept auto-rejecting my card. I wasted close to five hours and ultimately had to hire a visa agent to take care of it for me. Now I am set to travel to Asia, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that First Community will leave me stranded there. Not once, but repeatedly. I am sure of it. There will be a time in the near future when I desperately need my money, they will deny me access, and I will have no way of getting in touch with them. My only hope is that I will not be sleeping under a bridge with the rats. This financial institution is the absolute worst. Maybe if you're a kid who needs a place to deposit your money from your part-time grocery store job, or you need a mortgage for a small home in Ellisville and never plan to set foot outside of Missouri. But as soon as I am able, I am going to a for-profit commercial bank rather than this credit union, because experience has taught me that it is preferable to this level of incompetence.
