Orange Tree Theatre - Cast of "French Without Tears" taking curtain calls

Have you ever been to a theatre-in-the-round? I had not and admit that I'd not even known what…read morethat meant. Then I spent an evening at the Orange Tree Theatre and now I'm all in. What a fun way to experience a show. A theatre-in-the round is one with seating on all sides of the stage. In the case of the Orange Tree, the concept continues on the balcony level. with long bench-seating (with backs) and a padded rail to lay your elbows atop. I'd booked tickets in advance, on-line and arrived at my (2) balcony seats to find an envelope with my name hand written on it. When I opened I found a letter - also hand-written - thanking me for joining them and welcoming me. This was an unexpected delight. The show I saw was Noel Coward's "Suite in Three Keys" (excellent) and I wish I'd had more time to see the other two Coward plays they were staging (with the same cast). Seats here were comfortable and they appeared to have a devoted crowd of regulars. Those folks would know what I didn't though, so here's your warning: save your drinks until post-show. The way the seating is arranged on the balcony level there is no way to get out of your seat mid-performance to, say, use the restroom. Likewise, if you arrive late you'll not be able to get to your seats if they're in the middle of a balcony row. For these instances, they allow guests to watch the show via video screen from an alternate space. You've been warned. So save the drinks until later and arrive on time. The theatre-in-the-round experience is fun and Orange Tree Theatre offers a great overall experience.

Made a belated first visit to this theatre the other night after knowing of it for many years…read more I appreciated their understated approach from the moment you walk in, with welcoming staff and not too elaborate decor in the lobby/bar area. The seating is intimate and I also received the first-time-attendee welcome note (as another reviewer noted), which is an extra positive touch that will linger in my memory. The play offered strong commitment from the actors and an energetic staging in the round. I would definitely consider attending another show here if given the chance.

I do believe I have been changed for the better!…read more I love the story of Wicked and what a magical opportunity to get to see it in London. The theater is right next to a major tube station making it really easy to get to. I purchased my tickets well in advance and sat in Circle G34 and 35. In my opinion, these are some of the best seats in the house because they are in the first row of the section but they are a two-seater. If you're coming as a couple, it feels like you have complete privacy with some of the best views. One thing to note is that the actors in the show all speak and sing with British accents. It wasn't something I thought about but for some shows, they speak in American accents, but not here. Someone had advised me that that bothered them, but it didn't make a difference to us! A great show in a great theater!

800th review! I…read morecannot explain how much I adore this musical. No joke, it may or may not be the best musical I have ever seen and I have watched Broadway shows, musicals that are on National Tour, the Muny (in St. Louis), etc. and this is the best one I've seen. I've always loved the songs from Wicked and never got the chance to see it until now and I have definitely been missing out. Bought tickets pretty close to the stage for around $50 at a half priced ticket booth in the West End. I looked online and they were all $100+ for the seats we got so I thought it was a pretty good deal. When we came, they initially sat us near the far right aisle but we soon moved closer to the center when we saw how many empty seats there were. Honestly the theater was more than half empty which is just so sad but good, I guess, for the guests so they can get a better seat. The musical itself was amazing. The performers were such great singers and actors, the ensemble were amazing dancers, and the set was absolutely mind-blowing. I think one of the most impressive parts was when the dragon on top of our heads on the stage began to move, I genuinely thought that was only for decoration sake. I won't spoil too much about the show, but I will say that the experience is absolutely amazing. The British accent actually works really well for this musical and I honestly cannot wait to come back to see it again. Never have I been inclined to buy a souvenir from a musical after I saw it, but I really did, it was absolutely amazing.

The royal court is a place that divides opinions…read more Some call it pretentious, some innovative. Clearly being a stones throw away from Sloan Square Station it will attract the well-to-do spectator. The Royal Court Theatre is famed for its new writing, contemporary style and its inclusion of youth. It opens itself up to submissions from young writers and will often be overrun by budding play wrights and drama students. It sees big names in contemporary theatre such as Caryl Churchill and Jackie Kay but also sieves out some really interesting and varied performances from budding artists. I can't say everything I've seen there I'll be writing home about, but the last performance I went to see, Choir Boy in the upstairs space was the right mix of talent and entertainment, with a bit of moral dilemma thrown in. The space itself if pretty gorgeous. While the downstairs theatre is more traditional and larger, the upstairs space is more intimate. The audience are places so that they are literally staring directly at one another. Overall, I think it's a case of personal taste if you will bond with this theatre and its style.

It was a real thrill to get to return here on a recent re-visit to London…read more The theatre is well known in the arts community for its attention to new writing, experimental fare, and veteran artists, sometimes all in the same play. And it was clear that those objectives have remained a constant since the last time I was at the theatre in 2007. I had to book my ticket several weeks ahead from the USA, and appreciated that there were no extra service charges included in the purchase. Pickup was very efficient right at the main desk, and it seemed like the facilities have been attended to with care. Although my seat was in the middle of a horseshoe-shaped area of the theatre, it did not feel especially cramped. Thank you, Royal Court, for being a beacon of sustainability, class and creativity in London's theatre world!

Now this is a fun spot! I was visiting some friends in London and the 2 bars we had been to…read morebeforehand this past Friday were kind of boring, I was ready for some music and dancing and this definitely did it for me! The bar tenders were friendly, drinks were decently priced, bathrooms were clean and it was my bday at midnight and the bar tender wished me a happy bday and either she or someone bought me a shot! I go to clubs because my friends go but I prefer bars yet I don't like to just stand around, I like to dance. I don't need a designated dance floor but the Tavern was a perfect combination of all of this. The Dj this past Friday was also fantastic playing all of the greatest hits! I come to the UK every few years, I'd love to live in London so hopefully I'll be back soon and make it back into the tavern!

A really well turned out pub…read more Just along the road of Ealing Broadway, toward the common is this little place. From the exterior it feels like it should be sporting some shisha pipes and cushions. There's some good outdoor seating, half covered by canvas for those wetter but warmer days and a good space inside. This bar looks good, clean, trendy for the area yet comfortable and intimate. The bar has a good selection, Moretti by the bottle. It's main draw is its cocktail menu. Expertly tailored and exquisitely executed drinks. No doubt the bar staff are a talented lot. However, it's a place a tad on the pricey side and doesn't have many more draws. When I think night out for cocktails, I don't think Ealing. The food, by the look of the Menu looks rather nice. A good Meze selection which was rather large in portion size., however the more ambitious meals fall through. A friend had something chicken-y and it looked (and apparently tasted) foul, bit of a waste of £11. Although it's nice enough, it's just that little bit out of the way and a little bit meh to draw me back on a regular basis. However good for groups I think, and always better than it's neighbour, Wetherspoons. No contest there.
