Our healthy little babe who just needed a little extra care
Amanda B.

During 19.5 hours of latent labour and 12 hours of active labour before an emergency Caesarean section, and then three days in the hospital afterward, the staff from beginning to end were all SO amazing! I cannot express how grateful we are of everyone's care, knowledge (and sharing of that knowledge), and calm demeanour during my first childbirth, one that came with many complications. Even during four hours of a fever and violent chills, and the high possibility of losing our little guy, they still managed to keep both my husband and I calm and did everything in their power to help us get through a scary, anxious, but also exciting time after our healthy baby was born. From the diabetes clinic and non-stress tests during my pregnancy to postpartum care and the breastfeeding clinic, the staff really went out of their way to make sure my baby and I were well taken care of. They made sure my husband was fully involved and taken care of as well. We weren't sure how everything would go during the pandemic, especially being first-time parents, but they didn't miss a beat. It could've easily all been incredibly overwhelming, but instead we felt safe, assured, and ready for the new adventure ahead. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I've had only good experiences at the Queensway Carleton hospital. Wait times for our patient care are reasonable.

BUT for a non-specific visit to the ER, I would head for Kemptville. It's an excellent little community hospital, easy to get to, from the southern reaches of Ottawa, and they have competent and efficient staff, day and night. I've been there on my own behalf, and we took my mother-in-law there twice while she was living with us. On all three occasions, there was almost no waiting, and the triage and examination were professional and courteous. There's a reason that a LOT of people in the southwestern end of Ottawa choose Kemptville hospital when they can get there on their own. Only part of that reason is the normal lack of crowding and fast service. When it's an emergency, though, you let the ambulance dispatch and crew decide where to go. That's what professionals are for. If I was 'in extremis' and they said they wanted to take me to Kemptville hospital, I wouldn't object. I think the person who gave Kemptvill District Hospital a one-star review must have been having a bad-hair day.

Without exception, every single person I interacted with (including the lovely lady from the cleaning staff, who accompanied me on the elevator and then directed me to the surgery check-in) were warm, engaging, friendly, helpful and professional. I do have a basis of comparison at other hospitals and this was definitely the best. Thanks to all, including Dr. Davidson and the whole surgical team, for making it such a positive experience, especially given the extraordinary circumstances you are working under.

Pre -op testing session a test was forgotten and so I had to return to the hospital to complete another test. Washed myself as much as could after handed two bowls of water. I had been nervous about going to this hospital because I am English speaking. My fears were put to rest. Everyone I encountered from receptionists to nurses to doctors made every attempt to speak to me in English. Dr. Gauvin and her team were amazing. From those who looked after me pre-surgery to the surgical team (amazing) to the nurses post- surgery, I was well taken care of every minute. My last nurse even found food for me before I left the hospital because we had a long drive home. A positive, understanding and kind attitude showing respect helped make my experience a very positive one. Thank you to everyone who touched my life during my visits and my treatment. Very much appreciated!

This review is only for the Family Birthing Centre (first pregnancy)…read more Firstly I would like to say, the family birthing centre portion of the website lists exactly what you can expect before during and after and all the essentials you may need to bring with you. I am going to highly recommend anyone giving birth here to have a quick read. I arrived at the emergency at around 5:30am as I had starting having contractions, we were escorted by security to the birthing unit where we firstly spent some time being assessed (private area, bed, hooked up to monitors for assessment) before we were assigned a room roughly within the hour. The birthing room was large, private bathroom with tub, a lounging chair for partner. It was equipped with everything. Most nurses (throughout my 2 day stay) were kind, helpful, just there to get the job done. The on call OB was informative, decisions when to administer some sort of pain medications were made quickly, she even answered all my questions when I was informed I had to undergo an emergency c section. The procedure it self was well planned, there is a team of professionals in that room that all have a purpose. There were minor complications and baby was taken under care to another room quickly. Post surgery, we were brought to a private room, large windows, private bathroom, touch screen so you can order food (various options). The floor also has an area with coffee/ hot water station, a fridge filled with juice/ milk, sandwiches etc for use. The nurse do try and help with things like baby latching support, will bring pump on request etc. The only negative part of the experience was asking for baby formula, at sometime the request wasn't fulfilled in a timely manner. When our nurse was on break at night, the backup nurse told us to just wait till she returns all while the baby was crying. Recommendations: Sign up for at home midwife support if offered. They came home, checked baby weight, my stitches, they can even prescribe some medications and do tests at the comfort of your own home. Consider bringing your own formula just incase.
