If you want to feel surrounded by Heritage Architecture, this is your spot. With the Barracks on one side, St James' Church on the other, the Law Courts Building, Hyde Park and the Mint as well. It's small and quiet (when the construction work on the Law Courts Building dies down) and often full of people grabbing a bit of sun.
Trails of lawyers stride past, architecture students sit and paint the buildings, tourists discreetly take a few snaps and move on to grander spots. As I was sitting here the other day, a bicycle courier zoomed past carrying the most enormous bunch of flowers. I wish.
There's a statue of Queen Victoria looking especially large and cranky, and I always wish the Victorian artists had been able to portray her more realistically. Think about it, she must have been pregnant a great deal of the time. I think I'd be less of a republican if there were a few more images of pregnant queens.
Enough of my ramblings. Spare a thought for all the people who've walked over this square down the centuries. If you've any imagination at all, that'll get ya thinking. read more
