Mosman is an odd suburb. Whilst thoroughly residential, with the zoo and Balmoral it is also a secret enclave for in-the-know tourists and visitors.
One unmissable spot is Georges Height, for the best view available of the Heads, entrance to Sydney Harbour. It's a historically interesting spot, site of the fortifications established to protect Sydney in the event of attack during the World Wars - plaques and information boards explain the equipment that was in place and how the area was supplied prior to the days of the Harbour Bridge. Despite the defensive efforts, it is incredible to believe that two Japanese submarines crept past effectively right under their noses! On the first Sunday of each month it is possible to join guided tours that explore the tunnels, complemented by stories of the lives of the people who lived and worked there.
Long before European settlement, the area was also significant to local Aboriginal tribes. Early interactions between the cultures took place here, with the newcomers 'granting' farming land and equipment to the local Kuringgai people nearby. Neither they nor any subsequent Europeans were able to use this headland land successfully for agriculture.
History aside, Georges Heights today is a spectacular viewpoint, accessible from the Georges Heights parklands or en route along the coastal path between Balmoral and Chowder Bay. You would be hard-put to find a better place to rest your feet. read more
