Close to 200 miles it 'tis, and a fine hike that's famed world wide. Don't believe me? I quaffed a couple of fine English pints here this evening with people from Australia, France and the U.S. (myself included). We're all starting the hike tomorrow. But I digress. A fine pub area, suitable selection of fine English ales and a few favorites like Guinness and Stella Artois on tap. Friendly bartender, and the food... wow. Had the steak and ale pie with a vegetable puree (turnips?) and cabbage that was heavenly. And I think it's no coincidence that this is the pub everyone seeks out before they start the hike because as you know, getting this much exercise, the body needs hydration! Yea, that's what it is... hydration. We're preparing our bodies (and minds) for the task at hand. Manor House, keep the taps flowing. I may be back to do this walk again next year and I can't think of a finer way for it to start than with a pint or two and some good company in your pub. Well done, well done.

The Hotel looked so deserted we hardly dared to try the door. To our surprise the door to the bar was open. The huge place was empty and almost spooky. After some time an elderly woman came and we could order from the limited choice of drinks. After some chatting the lady of the house became more friendly and even fetched a couple of leaflets for us from a back room, which took quite a while. Peculiar place.

Sent us to the only table without a view of the beach. When we asked for another, she replied that the others were reserved. They remained empty the whole evening. Food, however, was superb. I had the mussels. My companions the baked Brie and satay starters, Thai salad, and I forget the other. Well-prepared and -presented from a chef who clearly knew her craft. If you go, phone ahead. The location is great and the food worthy of a drive. But expect desultory service.

Tourism is not extensive at Workington. The owners, Steven and Angela are really nice and do a good job of making sure you have a comfortable stay. I happened to stay in Room 10 on the second floor towards the rear of the building. The room was spacious, warm and clean. The bed was comfortable and I enjoyed three nights of blissful sleep. They also have free Wifi. At the moment they only do breakfast. I was told that they're in the process of refurbishing the hotel after which they will be able to provide a full dining experience. Talking of the breakfast, I was keen on a bacon sandwich. I had an amazing plate of sandwich on the two days I chose to have breakfast and got a good quantity of excellent coffee to wash it down. Again, no complaints whatsoever. They do have a policy of no food in the rooms, which came as a bit of a let down. However, according to Steve, they have had a few bad experiences of sauces and gravy being spilled on the sheets, which has resulted in this policy. So, you've been informed. Overall, if and when I have to go to Workington the next time, I would prefer to stay at the Green Dragon.

The reception is clean and tidy, the lady on reception over my stay was very friendly and helpful, she actually showed an interest in my reasons for my stay. There is a vending machine within the hotel if you get peckish or thirsty. Each room is well equiped with tea and coffee making facilities and TV's. There is ample parking outside and the hotel is next to the Solway Gate which is fantastic. This is an excellent priced hotel where kids stay free. The only downside is the hotel does not offer air-conditioning.

The Inn is quaint, charming, and comfortable and the staff are kind, welcoming and accommodating! We arrived and were immediately happy with the safe and private parking accommodations. We actually arrived very late that evening, and called ahead, they waited up for us and were so kind upon arrival. The Hotel is SO charming, cute and cozy. The aesthetic is charming English cottage, while also being updated and feeling clean. The hotel rooms themselves are more modern (though unique) to give you all of the comforts of home - my fave being the towel warmer. Our room was wonderfully clean (and I'm a stickler on cleanliness!) and the bed was so comfortable, especially after a long drive. It was such a comfortable and clean place to lay our heads for the evening. The hotel has a restaurant that I would also recommend. Breakfast was incredible - one of the first hotel breakfasts where I haven't had to douse in pepper haha. Well seasoned and well cooked, high quality ingredients. Jonathan is a wonderful chef. My husband said the hollandaise was one of the best he's ever had. I'd recommend stopping by for sure, and don't miss breakfast! The hotel is also very unique in that they have local goods/art around the hotel, both as decor and for sale. Such a sweet touch. We bought one of Caroline's paintings - she's multi talented! There was a balcony facing into the Atrium which was nice to have tea on and sit and listen to the waterfall below. Bathroom large and airy with shower. Lots of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and a kettle in room. Small fridge. The Green lift to the room is a bit old and slow. Breakfast was magnificent, full on English and Vegan Sausages available if you ask. Lovely view through the window to the beach. All staff were friendly, polite and chipper. Location next to Gaiety and the end of the Stand is excellent. Sir Norman sits on a bench awaiting you on the front porch.
