The staff were delightful and helpful, genuinely appearing to enjoy their jobs. The local amenities are great - and convenient too. I would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to anyone.
Visited the hotel on a Sunday evening, the bar was fairly quiet…read more Good selection of beers and wines, there was also a tray of sandwiches and cheese and biscuits to help yourself to, which I thought was a nice touch. Very friendly landlord made us feel very very welcome. Excellent, will definitely return

If you're in St Bees and you don't live here, there's a pretty darn good chance the reason is…read moreyou're getting ready to hike the Coast to Coast walk which originates on the beach. Close to 200 miles it 'tis, and a fine hike that's famed world wide. Don't believe me? I quaffed a couple of fine English pints here this evening with people from Australia, France and the U.S. (myself included). We're all starting the hike tomorrow. But I digress. A fine pub area, suitable selection of fine English ales and a few favorites like Guinness and Stella Artois on tap. Friendly bartender, and the food... wow. Had the steak and ale pie with a vegetable puree (turnips?) and cabbage that was heavenly. And I think it's no coincidence that this is the pub everyone seeks out before they start the hike because as you know, getting this much exercise, the body needs hydration! Yea, that's what it is... hydration. We're preparing our bodies (and minds) for the task at hand. Manor House, keep the taps flowing. I may be back to do this walk again next year and I can't think of a finer way for it to start than with a pint or two and some good company in your pub. Well done, well done.
Chase Hotel

I would avoid staying at The Chase if you want anything out of your stay other than a comfortable…read morebed for the night and free parking. I stayed here in September 2010. It's an old mansion-style house set within gardens close to the main road into Whitehaven. From the outside it looks like a quaint hotel, but inside, although you can tell they have made an effort to modernise, it still looks fairly dated. I was put in a room on the 3rd floor, but there is no lift. I struggled to carry my bags up the stairs, and the staff at reception did not offer to help. My room was fairly big and the biggest plus for the room was the large window that opened fully (a rare find as hotels these days seem to apply those latches which restrict you from opening them more than an inch or so). It was a good job that the window opened because the heating was on full throughout the hotel which was stifling. I had to keep the window open the entire time I was there to not feel overheated. The room itself looked dated with old and tired furniture, however the bed was very comfortable and the room was cleaned to a high standard. I tried to shower but the pressure was so weak that I gave up and opted for a full bath instead. I dined in the restaurant for my evening meal. There was no diet cola available so had to make do with the full sugar variety. The meal I ordered was nice, and you got plenty of it, but it was quite expensive. The waitress asked if I wanted the cost of my meal charged to my room which I accepted, as it was more convenient for me for all charges to be on one receipt as I could claim back these costs from my company. On checking out I didn't notice that the meal hadn't been charged, and subsequently The Chase charged my account separately a few weeks later for the cost of the dinner without telling me, which by that point I'd already arranged my expenses and had to stump that cost myself. The other gripe I have with this hotel is that they advertise free wi-fi on their website, but it isn't free and a charge applies. They should either change this on their website to say the charge applies, or make it free. The Chase charges far too much for what it offers, and it is in desperate need of modernisation if it wants to keep charging what is does. You can find much nicer hotels in the area for similar costs that provide much more than this hotel does.

We only got there by chance and there was "nothing to write home about"…read more The whole place looks empty, rough and neglected. Maybe, the Cafe is OK but we didn't go in. The Hotel looked so deserted we hardly dared to try the door. To our surprise the door to the bar was open. The huge place was empty and almost spooky. After some time an elderly woman came and we could order from the limited choice of drinks. After some chatting the lady of the house became more friendly and even fetched a couple of leaflets for us from a back room, which took quite a while. Peculiar place.

Sent us to the only table without a view of the beach. When we asked for another, she replied that the others were reserved. They remained empty the whole evening. Food, however, was superb. I had the mussels. My companions the baked Brie and satay starters, Thai salad, and I forget the other. Well-prepared and -presented from a chef who clearly knew her craft. If you go, phone ahead. The location is great and the food worthy of a drive. But expect desultory service.
