I wanted to find a place in Windermere that had the 'old English charm'... It certainly has that to an extent, though there are improvements that could be made. Because it is a very old building, the walls are not soundproofed at all... you can hear conversations being had in the next room. The plumbing didn't always work and the bed.... we were in a four poster bedroom (one of the more expensive ones) and you could feel every single one of the springs in the bed. It was not comfortable at all. Even in cheap backpacker hostels have I slept on more comfortable beds! Other than that, the hotel was very comfortable, cosy, the restaurant was great at catering for gluten free (though marking at breakfast what is and isn't gluten free would have been helpful). The bar was good and there were a lot of comfortable couches around the place. There were lake views out of one side of the hotel (unfortunately our room looked out to the road). The wifi was terrible - non existent in the rooms and very weak in the common areas downstairs. Overall it was a good stay but there are definitely measures that could be taken to improve... starting with the mattresses and the plumbing! I'd probably stay somewhere else next time but it was good to give it a go! read more
