Captain Dan took us all around Chincoteague and Assateague, including up into the shallow marshes where the smaller boat could get us wonderfully close to the wildlife and scenery. We saw bald eagles, the Chincoteague ponies, Assateague Lighthouse, and some absolutely beautiful parts of the islands that you just can't appreciate from the road. You can normally see dolphins, but they didn't make an appearance for us. What really made the trip special, though, was Captain Dan himself. He was incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and clearly loves the area. We must have asked him a billion questions about everything under the sun--wildlife, fisheries, the ponies, the islands, local history, the marshes, even county sewage issues -- and he happily answered every one of them in depth. It felt much more like spending a couple of hours exploring Chincoteague with a very knowledgeable local (he's 7th generation on Chincoteague!!) friend than taking a standard tourist boat ride. The two hours flew by, and we came away knowing that we had seen and learned so much more about Chincoteague and Assateague than we ever had before. We can't recommend Captain Dan highly enough. If you're visiting Chincoteague, put this tour on your must-do list!

Then we sped out to the ocean to see the dolphins! The ocean is chopping so hold on!! Again, he found the dolphins near the shore and gave us every angle to get a great picture! On the way back he spotted a young pelican and we stopped to check it out! Yes, you need to take this tour!

The natural, unpaved trail is about a .4 mile U-shaped trail around marshes through the woods. We saw peacocks both days we went! No dogs allowed in this section of the trail. The paved loop is .6 mins around with benches and trash cans but dogs are allowed. It was lightly raining when we went but we still enjoyed the loop around ponds and across a little bridge in the woods.

We mainly went to watch the otters (Mac & Tuck) and stayed for their feeding time at noon. The staff did a short talk while they ate fish and played. Some beautiful murals, lots of old photos of the area and boats; and a gift shop with great books, toys, jewelry, and gifts. I got my Mom a hand carved humming bird by a local artist.

Jane's Island seems to be known primarily for the camping possibilities. The camping sites, both for tents and cabins, are pretty full during the season. Has a loyal following. Reserve early. There are two facilities within the refuge that welcome visitors to learn more about the local area - the Herbert H Bateman Educational and Administrative Building and the Tom's Cove Visitors Center located a few miles down the road by the beach. Prior to my visit, I was a little confused about the two different sites so I just wanted to point that out. The Educational and Administrative Building is very nice. It contains exhibits, a theater, a bookstore and nice bathrooms. The exhibits were primarily about the wildlife that is protected within the refuge. My husband and I had fun with the interactive exhibits and I love the comparison of a Bald Eagle's nest to a king size bed. I also enjoyed learning about the original caretaker of the refuge. The theater is nice and it plays a few different films relevant to the area. I would have loved to sit there and watch all four in the lineup. But after a long day, sitting in a dark room would have put me to sleep. The bookstore had a nice variety of books including the Misty of Chincoteague series. This might me the only restroom within the refuge. Other structures I saw were more like out houses.
