My friend had the nut roast and as someone who is not a veggie it was also very good.

Still, I followed a…read morefriend's recommendation to come down for a jazz open mic on a Friday night and I almost missed it. Once inside you are in pub heaven with a traditional looking lounge at the front, you almost walk into the bands as you enter the pub but there's plenty of seating to enjoy the music from a safe distance too. You pass through another section before the place opens up to the main bar at the back. It has quite a continental feel to it, and I can't believe I didn't immediately spot the massive vats at the back - I was too busy admiring the statues on the bar. And it's difficult not to be tempted by the selection of beers when in a brewery and I didn't regret my choice of Achtung. They also serve food and while the main menu is limited to sausage rolls and pies you can also order pizza or sushi which is delivered directly to your table by local takeaways. I'll definitely be back, a real gem.

Their Early Doors IPA was always likely to be my favourite, but I also enjoyed Dark Matter, 2 O'clock Ordinary and their Weissbier called Achtung! Good brewery. We stayed long enough to warrant some food. The burgers looked delicious, but we decided to go for 3 snacks for a tenner. This meant we could both have a snack of our choice and also share some chips. I enjoyed the luxury fish fingers! (No Captain Birdseye here!)

Third, the staff- from the time we entered to the time we left- were all friendly. We ate in the upstairs dining room, which has lovely high ceilings and a large room with dark wood tables and typical pub seating. The kitchen is upstairs and we got a table next to it but surprisingly and pleasantly discovered later we didn't smell like food. Now the drink. My husband and I split two bottles of a bottle cider, a peach flavour I think, and it was quite good. Lots of drinking options including cocktails. Now the food: As a veghead, I was happy at the variety of pizza, main and tapas options. The food prices are a bit high, especially for the tapas, so I ordered the least expensive veg main, the broad bean purée and broccoli rabe flatbread. My husband got a spicy pizza with nduja sausage. My dish arrived fairly quickly and I was confused at first; I thought it was the wrong order. It comes as a soup with stewed rabe and two pieces of crispy bread like pappadam. This is not how I envisioned flatbread: food atop a slice of dough like pizza. The waiter was so concerned and offered to take it back but I hate food waste so I plowed in. It was actually good- not fantastic- with a very thick purée and the sautéed rabe blending well. There is a lot of rabe and the constant chewing can get a bit tiresome but overall I liked the dish although I think it's better on a cold night as it's served piping hot. The flatbread pieces are bland. My husband said his pizza was good but much spicier than he expected. I nibbled on the pizza crusts and liked the chewy dough. One of the best experiences of the night was the waiter TBH. His attention to customer service- asking how our food was, if we wanted anything else, etc- was as if we were back in the US. I felt I had entered a country warp! SO rare in London to have that good service!

Well, except the eagle, we'll have to make to with a wooden replica on the bar from now on. You could tell staff were still fresh and yet the evening was supersmooth - we even had a round of freebies brought to our table, as well as countless boards of delicious nibbles. Everything was freshly cooked and beautifully presented. Will definitely be back for a proper meal on a quieter evening - or their bottomless brunch with free flowing prosecco on a Saturday. With pubs in the neighbourhood closing at a record rate, and others turned into fancy bars with bouncers, the Eagle reboot is a bit of welcome news. The current Eagle does not have much in common with the pub I discovered more than twenty years ago on an edgy pub crawl (as in let's go to all the pubs on the edge of being closed down) when Ladbroke Grove was still rather dodgy and lined with pubs that got a bit dodgier the further North you went. It was very run down at the time and frequented by firemen from the station next door, tumbleweed and only one beer on tap as the landlady could not afford more than one barrel at the time. The pub's been through a few reincarnations since and I am just happy that it is still a pub. Just checked their website and apparently they aim to offer "The best of British - with a Bavarian twist" which explains the sauerkraut served with the hotdogs ... but most importantly it has a cosy pub feel to it with low lighting, mix-and-match furniture and music at a volume that allows for good chat. And it speaks for the team that the pub was still packed well past the happy hour of free drinks. Good contender for becoming my favourite local even if it means a bit of a walk uphill.
