The staff are friendly, the fish is crispy and the chips are nice too. Portions are huge too! It's nice taking a stroll by the quay after our meal too. I appreciate how it doesn't stink of fish in this area however along the pedestrian path there's quite a bit of dog shit despite all the signs reminding pet owners to pick up after their pets...

When my friends came to visit for the weekend we decided to head down to the fish quay in order to show them the places you go to for real fresh fish! We got there about 6ish on a Saturday evening and were seated straight away in a nice booth. Ordering some drinks and plenty of food we all choose something a little different. I went for the haddock and chips with a side of curry sauce - which on arrival was enough to feed 2 people. The pot of curry sauce would have been enough for the 3 of us! My friends opted for the battered sausage and scampi both of which looked good too. All accompanied with plenty of salt, vinegar and tarter sauce alongside a rather large bowl of scraps for free! All meals do come with a pot of tea and bread & butter however we decided there was enough carbs on our plate already! With a few cans of pop there was also an option for wine and beers on the menu which is a nice touch. Staff were good although they could have done with some extra people to help clean up the tables as those were left to stand for a little longer than necessary. All in all though - this is a great chippy and I think I impressed my guests too with a bit of northern goodness!

The food was delicious. Everything from the mackerel paté to the mushy peas fritters for appetizer were great. I thought a bit of acid would've perked them up but everyone ate them regardless. We had the cod, haddock some fried some grilled. Beautiful! Perfectly cooked. Not greasy. The drinks were great as well. The teenagers said 'best curry sauce ever'. And the scenery is top notch if you love watching the North Sea

I know it's table service with stunning sea views and it was cosy but would I return - most…read morecertainly not. It was busy and noisy when we arrived but that tapered off. We each ordered two 2 courses (starter/main and main/dessert) so we could share a starter and a dessert. What was the worst of it? Well two main annoyances - plates were not hot not even close. Second the service took for ever especially waiting for our main course. I should add that the flat white coffee was poor enough too. The Fritto Misto starter was a mean portion of lukewarm, cheap fish like calamari and mussels and skinny slices of limp cold vegetables like red pepper - really unappealing. The main of cod and chips was just alright - the cod was neither thick nor generous, but it was fresh and the batter pleasant - and no discernible grease. With all the hype I'd heard of this place it was really disappointing. The portion of chips was mean and as the plates were lukewarm the food didn't stay hot long either. Plates for fish & chips need to be really very hot and there's no excuse for them not to be. The crumble dessert was ok. Not bad but not delicious. The crumble topping and ice cream were darn good. The mushy peas were darn good and the scraps (fried bits of batter) were exquisite - fried unhealthy and almost the best part of an otherwise truly forgettable meal. The staff were friendly and inefficient maybe because of the kitchen but I found no evidence of the great reputation I'd heard about the place. Would I go back - it's two star for the price paid, poor coffee, mean portions, cool plates and slow service - certainly not but it has aspects of good 3 star, just not enough.

Ended up here on Easter Monday evening, and unfortunately, the restaurant was closed so we did take away. The ladies behind the counter were amazing! The portions were fantastic ( trust me, the 'small' is more than enough!) It's one of the highlights of our trip, and we would do it again in a heartbeat! Thanks!!!!

This review doesn't cover the eat-in area. The eat-in area closes earlier than the takeaway counter. The place was nice for a takeaway joint, perhaps because it doubles as a restaurant. The eat-in prices looked more expensive, and the eat-in area definitely isn't handicapped accessible (stairs leading to a basement eating area). The prices were actually really reasonable. I got a burger and chips (fries) for 3-4 GBP. The chips were actually really good, golden brown and the right mixture between mush and crunch. If you've never had it, the complimentary salt and vinegar topping is a tasty alternative to ketchup. It's almost like eating salt and vinegar chips (American chips in this case) The burger had an interesting barbecue-sauce hue to it, but it was decent--maybe a little low on the quality spectrum. I've had worse. They serve it with a generous bun, lettuce, relish, and ketchup. They have burger and chicken options, but seriously, the fish are probably better, but they do have options for those who don't like fish, kudos to them. Good prices on tasty English chippy food is appreciated. Paxton's is a good value. It's definitely a three, almost a 3.5 stars. Alas, we must round down.

Their corvid discipline was good and plenty of customers sat outside as it was a nice day. I ordered fish & chips with mushy peas. This was served on an old tin plate, something your dog uses & 2 cups of tea in paper cups, no sugar readily available! The food itself was adequate, the service was slow and inadequate. Their failing in my eyes was the failure to train the teenage serving staff adequately. The table beside us ordered 4 x fish finger & chips & got fish and chips and a mistake with drink orders also. The teenage servers found it difficult to deal with as the customers complained. In my opinion there should be an adult at front of house to resolve their mistakes. Pleasant enough in all other aspects.
