Marshalls is a gem, right in the middle of it all. It's simple. Fish, chips and a can of the soda/pop of your choice. By far my favorite fish in all of the shops that I've tried. HUGE portion of fish on top of a large pile of chips (fries) simply served in a basket. There's really not much else to say. Would I go back? I do. Every single visit. It's is one of, if not THE, most important stops of every visit. So just go. If you find yourself anywhere near the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area, you MUST go.

The fish itself was delicious but the batter and the way it was fried completely wrecked it. This was some really greasy fish. It was the type of greasy that lingers in your mouth like a layer. The chips lacked everything. Poorly fried and lifeless chips. It's a shame cause it's also expensive compared to others in the area. £7.50 for fish and chips £6.50 with no chips. We each ordered two 2 courses (starter/main and main/dessert) so we could share a starter and a dessert. What was the worst of it? Well two main annoyances - plates were not hot not even close. The Fritto Misto starter was a mean portion of lukewarm, cheap fish like calamari and mussels and skinny slices of limp cold vegetables like red pepper - really unappealing. The main of cod and chips was just alright - the cod was neither thick nor generous, but it was fresh and the batter pleasant - and no discernible grease. With all the hype I'd heard of this place it was really disappointing. The portion of chips was mean and as the plates were lukewarm the food didn't stay hot long either. Plates for fish & chips need to be really very hot and there's no excuse for them not to be. The crumble dessert was ok. Not bad but not delicious. The crumble topping and ice cream were darn good. The mushy peas were darn good and the scraps (fried bits of batter) were exquisite - fried unhealthy and almost the best part of an otherwise truly forgettable meal. The staff were friendly and inefficient maybe because of the kitchen but I found no evidence of the great reputation I'd heard about the place. Would I go back - it's two star for the price paid, poor coffee, mean portions, cool plates and slow service - certainly not but it has aspects of good 3 star, just not enough.

We purchased a large Cod and chips plus a standard "Prime" Cod and shared the chips between us and there were plenty of chips for two from the one portion. Total price was £14.60 which included tea for two and a slice of bread with spread each. Pensioner rates are available. The fish was cooked but the batter was like a crisp shell with an eighth of an inch layer of uncooked soggy raw batter attached beneath and largely inedible. We placed the batter upside down on a side plate and left it, on reflection we should have complained. I do not know if the fryer was a regular fully trained person but their cooking was not up to scratch. Good batter is an essential for this type of establishment. The Cod itself was not as big as expected for the largest portion with the batter removed and the difference between the two portions was not greatly evident, the chips were well drained and tasty enough, the tea was good and the bread was from a standard white loaf. The facilities were good enough as the place has been completely refurbished after the fire. I was close to giving two stars but the fish was all eaten and the chips as well so we had what we went in for. I did miss the batter though!

Their fish and chips are really nice portions are adequate for one person anyway, the fish is nice and they also have quite a large menu of other fried items. Their smoked battered sausages are lovely! They have one rival on Ocean Road - won't mention names but the rival is located further up Ocean Road in a more prime location for people who have just come from the beach, however during peak time, you're probably best off going to The Red Hut as the queues tend to be a lot shorter! And there's not that much difference in price or quality.
