Handily located in Hexham's main market place, I usually go by here on my way home from work, trying very hard to avoid being lured in by the tempting smell of hot chips and vinegar wafting out of the door!
However when my folks were up visiting not too long ago, we were looking for something else other than a sandwich for lunch and thought we'd treat ourselves. Some fish and chips was the order of the day so off we headed to Paxton's.
Primarily a take-away, there is a small seating area in the basement - down some fairly steep stairs - with around 5-6 tables, so whilst you don't have to reserve, there may be the odd time when you might not get a seat. We were in on a Friday mid-afternoon, there was only one other party having something to eat at the time and we were very promptly and politely served by the staff.
Incidentally, when I've been past on a Friday evening, there is often a fair queue waiting for take-away so this is a popular plaice ('scuse the pun...) as there is only one other chippy in the town, not quite as well-placed as Paxton's though.
Back to our food - I opted for the haddock and chips plus mushy peas and bread & butter on the side (would've been rude not to), Dad likes his cod whilst Mum always goes for scampi when it's on offer. All three orders came quickly and together, they were definitely what I call Northumbrian-sized portions - generous fillets of fish in golden batter or a sizable portion of scampi plus a good amount of freshly fried chips (cooked to near perfection I may add) per person.
We all thought the food was very good indeed, the only reason my folks couldn't finish it all was purely down to the portion sizes! Price-wise, it was reasonable enough, about £9/pp as we all had tea or coffee as well. The only thing to watch out for is the small charge they put on your bill if you want to pay by card.
I would happily go back there again, most likely for a take-away as the restaurant being downstairs did lack a little bit of ambience, you felt you were tucked out the way but that is not their fault given the age of the building and it's layout.
In summary, if you're in Hexham and fancy a punnet/poke/bag of chips, I'd heartily recommend you drop by Paxton's as they'll be frying tonight!
(Update - sooooooo, after writing this review I then spent the next hour pondering what to have for tonight's tea... couldn't get fish'n'chips out of my mind, so I gave in to temptation and actually went to Paxton's. Another haddock and chips, take-away this time, and was as good as the first time.) read more
