It was like something out of 'The Gilmore Girls' in that it also made no sense to me, but was cute and ultimately worthy of preservation. I'd perused the earlier entries to the guestbook - many enthusiastic about their bed's proximity to Lake Michigan and listening to the waves at night. I sleep with a fan. I left it at The Artist's Cottage on the nightstand by my bed in the upstairs. By the time the van broke down outside Friendship, Arkansas I'd convinced myself I also left three towels and my favorite pair of almost nice boots, but at this point all but the fan's been accounted for. Consider it my gift to those of you less enthusiastic about waves crashing into your otherwise perfectly ordinary dreams. But I digress... This is, afterall, supposed to be a review of something other than me, myself, or I. The proprietor - the Don, if you will - of The Artist's Cottage is sharing his dad's story with you; inviting you to immerse yourself in it. It's a completely unique experience and I guess I simply felt honored to be in it. Everywhere is the art and artistry of William Carr (aka, also known as, "Bill") Olendorf (1925-1996). Bill was an advertising salesman in 1951 when he spent part of his vacation at Ox-Bow, a summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan that I think is still around. Of it Bill later said when at Ox-Bow that he was "enveloped in the art world." He also said that "the world is filled with beauty and art should record something of that beauty." You can see these sentiments in his art. You get to experience it firsthand as a guest in The Artist's Cottage. Awesome! Bill Olendorf became well-known for a particular pen-and-ink technique he called "formula drawing." He described it as starting with a single line with all others connected to it. Using this technique he illustrated scenes in Chicago and other places as well. There's examples throughout The Artist's Cottage that almost look like etchings, and are quite muted compared to the other pieces adorning the walls. Spend some time after being lucky enough to find one on the wall and follow its lines. These pieces have a specific sense of motion special to them. There's a sketchbook on the coffee table as well, but I prefer scouring the walls myself. I'm no expert but Bill's paintings, much more obviously featured throughout The Artist's Cottage on all the walls, strike me in the style of the Impressionist, and I found myself looking in them often. One upstairs bed is positioned in a kind of nook between two paintings and feels like its own magical oasis unto itself following a day of searching for more beach glass along the shore of Lake Michigan. The studio-cottage was built in 2003 to honor and maintain Bill's artwork by his son, Don Olendorf. Get it? The Don? There is information displayed among the paintings regarding Bill's career. If you really like Bill's artwork they have affordable prints, serigraphs, drawings, and books available for purchase. And if you really really like Bill's artwork, there are a limited number of acrylic paintings on hand, too. The Artist's Cottage is ideally located for easy access to Saugatuck, Fennville, and South Haven. Grand Haven, Holland and St. Joseph are also just a little bit further away. We spent quite a bit of time in Portage, Michigan and visited Grandville, Michigan with ease as well. Grand Junction, Michigan has an old bridge worth seeing, and folks tell me the Pullman Tavern in nearby Pullman, Michigan has become a respectable establishment you can be proud to be seen drinking in. You kind of have to find traffic to get stuck in if you are missing it visiting from a big city, and watchout for the deer especially if driving at night through the Allegan County Forest for which Fennville has been long recognized as a gateway. The beach at The Artist's Cottage is accessed via private stairs. There's a Bocce Ball set on the main deck, and you can use the kayak (at your own risk) and build a beach fire (on calm days) in the beach's fire ring. There is a hose outside The Artist's Cottage you can use to rinse the sand from your feet before entering. It can work for other soilings as well, so long as easily water-soluble. I am so biased you don't even know but even if I weren't I'd still give The Artist's Cottage top marks. 5 out of 5. 10 out of 10. Mostly because the proprietors care. They want you to have a good time. All you have to do is not be a jackass and you're going to have a great time at a once-in-in-a-lifetime experience in an under-appreciated location that your friends don't even know about yet. You don't deserve this, but you can get it anyway if you hurry.

Updated kitchen, bathrooms, new washer and dryer, AC. Delightfully decorated in a beach theme with bright colors. An in-ground pool (heated!) and large hot tub are available for use. Our unit (#4) even had a large screened-in porch. Great for sitting outside in the evening without worrying about mosquitos. Would absolutely rent again if we're headed to the Douglas/Saugatuck area. Something to note - management asks you to wash sheets and towels before you check out. Check out is a bit early (10am).

That area is really nice spot in which to relax and unwind in the peace and quiet. Fred, the owner, is very friendly and makes a real effort to make sure his guests enjoy their stay.

The ambiance of the building embraced history and was as if we stepped back into time. We chose to stay here because of the historical significance of the building itself. It served so many roles. The owner was a delight and so wonderful to chat with in the morning. It was clean and cool (seeing as we are in the middle of summer). Breakfast was served at 9AM in the morning and was delicious. French toast, fresh fruit, sausage, blueberry pound cake. They have tea and coffee as options. The pool was small but serene. Location was phenomenal - all shops were walking distance within 4 to 10 minutes. Highly recommend staying here.

Okay, for the fun stuff - we had less than a 5 minute walk to Lake Michigan and beach walking. This isn't the part of the beach with lots to do. For that, you'll need to hop on a bike or drive. I imagine in the summer and on weekends, this place is busy and louder; we stayed on a weeknight and it was fantastically quiet - best night's sleep we've had this trip. A lot of full-timers here. We rented two Motel Rooms this last weekend in South Haven for two nights for our family. The…read moretotal cost for a Friday and Saturday Night was just under $1,000.00. I rented here because the reviews online that I had read were better than good, but when I really dug into other review sites once I returned home, other than where I booked from, I found a completely different story. I want to make sure that there is a fair recommendation out there for people to really make up their mind on whether or not they should stay here. First, I do want to mention that the owners were very polite to us and we have no issue with them. Also, there is a charm to these old-style motel rooms including the beautiful tile in the bathrooms. Additionally, there are new entry doors with digital locks as well as new windows. And true, this place is serene and great if you like peace and quiet - but still, there are many additional things to take into consideration. Although the rooms appear nice in the pictures, there are still issues like water damaged ceilings, water damaged bathroom doors, leaky tub fixtures (which were also way out of date and require replacing), drywall that needs to be retaped and mudded as well as a musty smell to the rooms that don't show up in pictures. One of the two rooms had bugs, but not because the room was dirty and I'm not talking cock roaches, just bugs. The reason? The wall air conditioner is not sealed on the sides and bugs get in through the outside vent, and then through the side panels that are not sealed against the air conditioner. There were also some inconsistencies like one of the rooms had a microwave, one didn't. One had information about your stay, one didn't. There is no coffee maker or ironing board in the room, but you could ask at the front desk to use these items (listed in the information about the room) we did not, we might have used these items had they been in the room, but since it was not readily available, we just made other arrangements. Again, I really want to be fair here - but these basic amenities plus others like ice were not available to us. Additionally, there was no pool, there was no breakfast. The thing that is really agitating and I think that is important for travelers to know is that there is NOTHING here that justifies the room rates and just because it is in South Haven doesn't justify the price. The weekend before and as a part of this trip, we stayed in a Comfort Inn and Suites that had a nice, comfortable, up to date room, with an indoor pool and included breakfast for $120.00 per room per night in the Wisconsin Dells. For what I paid at Jensen's, it feels like we stayed in a dump.

Dome Haven Campground - Where "Camping" Meets a Luxury Spa Vacation…read moreThree Texas Ladies arrived at Dome Haven expecting a fun glamping overnight. We left wondering if regular tent camping has been officially ruined for us forever. From the moment we pulled in, we were impressed by the beautifully manicured grounds, peaceful atmosphere, and the feeling that every detail had been thoughtfully planned. The entire property was spotless, quiet, and incredibly well-maintained. As three women traveling together, one of the things we appreciated most was how safe and secure we felt throughout our stay. Our dome was absolutely adorable and surprisingly luxurious. The beds were so comfortable they felt like firm Tempur-Pedic mattresses, topped with soft sheets, cozy bedding, and heated blankets that made cool Michigan nights extra relaxing. The dome was stocked with thoughtful touches including robes, coffee mugs, wine glasses, fire starter pods, and a mini fridge--everything needed for a perfect girls' getaway. And then there was the bathhouse... Calling it a bathhouse almost feels insulting. It was more like a boutique hotel spa disguised as a campground. Four private bathrooms (including a handicap-accessible option), unlimited clean towels, cotton balls, Q-tips, a water station, microwave, air fryer, ice machine, great music, comfortable lounge area, and an overall vibe that made us want to hang out there even when we didn't need a shower. I've stayed in hotels that offered less. The private glamping hot tubs deserve their own paragraph. Tucked inside their own mini domes, they provided the perfect place to relax after a day exploring South Haven. The powerful bubblers, cozy lighting, and peaceful surroundings made it feel like we had our own private spa retreat. There is also individual fire rings and Adirondack chairs near each dome for your personal campfire needs. The sunsets over the property were breathtaking, painting the sky in shades of gold and orange while the domes glowed beneath the evening sky. It was one of those places that makes you stop scrolling your phone and simply enjoy the moment. Dome Haven has somehow managed to create the perfect combination of camping, luxury, comfort, and tranquility. You still get the beauty of nature, but without having to wrestle with tent poles, sleep on the ground, or argue with a sleeping bag zipper at 2 a.m. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, a girls' trip, or simply a peaceful escape from reality, this place is a hidden gem. We arrived as tent campers and left as glamping enthusiasts. We'll definitely be back--although we may need a support group for returning to normal tent camping afterward. 5 stars isn't enough. We'd happily give Dome Haven 10 out of 5.
