It takes a lot to impress me; I've worked in the fitness industry, and have a plethora of figure &…read morebodybuilding competition under my belt. But Jo is in a different category. She won't shout in your face. She won't beg you to come to do your workout. She won't nag you if your cheat meal turns into a cheat weekend. You'll work with Jo because you're excited for change, and she'll make that reality. I'll never forget: One of my first conversations with her, included talking about the concept behind Paleo and what's involved (including the costs) behind completing an Iron Man. Her emphasis isn't based on fluff or the latest 'get fit' tactic -- she's to the point, which is exactly what I love in a trainer and coach. Her no-nonsense approach is backed by science, education & personal experience. During my last workout with her, I asked her if I could do bicep curls. She looked at me, and said, 'why?' - Hm. Good question. Instead, we did 3 rounds of Burpies, Kettlebell overhead squats & military pushups. Did I get more out of those 10 minutes, than 3 sets of 12 of bicep curls? Hells' ya! Did I love every painful moment? Hells' ya! I'm down 2.5" from my waist, since working with Jo 3 weeks ago! And I was working out consistently 5-6 days a week prior to meeting with her, and saw very little results, and doing fasted cardio 3x's a week - I can barely believe the results myself. If you want change, Jo is the one to contact.

I've known Jo for about 6 years now. When I first met her, it was to get in shape for my wedding,…read moreand before we started working together, it had been a VERY long time since I had seen the inside of a gym. Jo worked with me at my pace, and modified my workouts as we went along and as I became more competent with the exercises. She always made sure I was in proper form and was able to knowledgeably answer the hundreds of questions I had about exercising and meals. She was also able to modify my workouts through my pregnancy to ensure that I wasn't putting any excess strain on my body. Jo is there when I need that extra push through those last few reps or when I need that extra motivation to get my butt out the door and workout. She is a great balance between keeping me accountable for my workouts and eating, but also supportive when my meals or workouts have slipped. I would strongly recommend Jo to those who are just starting out, and to those you have been working out for years. You won't find a better trainer in the city!

Staff are available for regular hours (something like 9-12, 3-8), but at all other times you need to have a fob to gain access. The gym itself is beautiful - big and not too busy, with new equipment and private change rooms and showers. I love that the cardio equipment is equipped with personal televisions, and that they offer a few classes too! They also have a circuit of weights and tons of free weights as well. I can't speak to the prices of the gym - I'm only a class member, but that allows me access to the full gym on class days - I'm considering joining, because I really enjoy it! It really is a stress-free, very accepting community of people which is a bit different from my experiences at other gym chains. Give it a try! They do offer 2-week passes through Yelp!!

It is hard to miss and is not visible to the street view. As you walk in the place is very cute and very clean. The ladies that work there are very friendly and very informative/helpful regarding any questions you may have. Our instructor was very nice. I totally forgot her name. She was awesome, she's very interactive in the class. She does walk around the room periodically to make sure you are in the right position which is quite helpful because I can tell you I had no clue as to what I as doing. The whole class was awesome, we all definitely felt the burn. By the way, it was the Barre Classic class which is recommended for beginners. It's a mixture of yoga, stretching and ballet moves, which by the way, were awesome practises that you can do at home. Who knew about these ballet moves?? When the class was over she interacted with us for a bit which was nice. They have a lot of specials/deals right now that are awesome. The one class by itself was $20. It was totally worth it. I can't tell you it was worth it because I could hardly get out of my bed this morning. I will definitely be back with my friends!!

I came to Barre Life while I was visiting family in Oakville. I'm a Pure Barre addict, so I HAD to…read morefind a barre studio during this trip. Barre Life had a great introductory special: unlimited classes for two weeks for only $40. Yay! So the studio is very nice and clean on the inside. The outside is not much to look at, though there is plenty of parking. The lobby is spacious, they have retail, and the front of the house staff are friendly. There is also a large women's locker room--always a plus. I took 3 classes at Barre Life: Sculpt and two level 1 classes. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety that the studio offers--I think it's great that there are different classes depending on what you're looking for (beginner, advanced, more ballet-oriented, etc). I enjoyed Sculpt the most, as it was somewhat similar to what I'm used to at Pure Barre. I like a more fast-paced and intense class as well as using different props, such as weights, balls, and resistance bands. I also enjoyed the music, which was upbeat and current. What prevents me from giving a higher rating is related to the instruction. During one class, I was actually discouraged when I challenged myself to hold a pose--I was told by an instructor to stop when she saw that my thigh muscles were shaking. Also, I never saw any of the instructors go around the room and adjust people's forms, and I could see that several people needed adjustments, including myself. I found this to be problematic because if you don't have the correct form, you could easily injure yourself--especially your back. Maybe other instructors are more conscientious about that, though. All in all, there were more positives than negatives, but the instructor contributes heavily to the experience in my opinion. I would still try Barre Life when I visit Oakville again, since it is still a great workout.
