Ensconced within the shopette at the corner of Parker and Mississippi (just across from the equally…read moreenticing pan-Soviet grocery called the Black Sea Market), the newly-opened Mile High Halaal Market will treat you to a decidedly different experience. The affable Somali proprietor is proud of his merchandise, and with good reason! There is a wide array of foodstuffs and beverages from East Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere offered here. Did you need a bag of instant Qahwo (Somali coffee, often spiced with cardamom, cloves and cinnamon)? Perhaps some Jowar (sorghum) flour? A jumbo canister of powdered milk? Or the mixes to make tangerine, watermelon, papaya or other fruit drinks? OK, technically those last items come from Chile, but you get my point - there's a lot of stuff to see here. And I haven't even mentioned their meat section - all Halaal of course! Why, there's your everyday beef and chicken, as well as Hilib Ari (goat), Hilib Geyl (camel)... mmmmmmmmm, so tasty! Well gee, where do you think Kiffah Cafe (on the other side of the parking lot) gets the meats for their yummy homestyle Somali dishes like Beer iyo Sabayad (liver and flatbread)? So visit Mile High Halaal Market and see why it's already on everyone's lips!

However the Denver Halal restaurant is inside and if you're looking for a no frills spot to grab affordable gyros and chicken shawarma this is your spot. Let's be clear this place is NOT fancy, you don't come for ambiance and you don't come for grocery items but their meats and sandwiches hit so I'll keep coming back.

I found items from Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and more, making it a great place to explore. Don't let the size fool you. It looks small from the outside, but every aisle is packed with unique finds. I spotted fresh herbs and vegetables, shrimp paste, dried fish, tamarind, mango sheets, seaweed snacks, Asian candies, seasonings, bamboo baskets, aluminum cookware, beauty products, gold-tone fashion jewelry, ice cream, pastries, fermented sausages, durian, muscle rubs, and cosmetics. A special thank you to Andrew, the owners' son, who was incredibly friendly and helpful. He took the time to explain products, answer questions, and offer recommendations, which made the experience even better. Parking tip: Don't park directly in front of the store since it's along a busy road. Instead, use the side parking lot just before you reach the store.
