They put in a metal detector to prevent people from bringing weapons in , LMFAO…read more I was literally lead through the emergency department by a so called security guard to get to the metal detector, if I had been there to cause harm it would have been easy , or I could have passed a weapon on to someone else. I have been to hospitals that have real security, You can't enter by any door without being checked. People wonder why the hospital is understaffed , maybe because the Hospital cares less about their staff then the patients. Would you work under those conditions.

After I got through the rude security staff everybody else were kind and gracious. I worked as a…read morenurse in this hospital for many years and am now retired. As a professional in the hospital we were always reminded--even though we didn't need a reminder--to be kind, compassionate and gentle with patients who are already stressed with their illness. When I entered the Emergency Department on Thursday morning September 25th, in a lot of pain--I am 74 years old--I was immediately surrounded my three security staff who made me feel like a criminal. An angry sounding security staff member asked why I was there and then told me to empty my purse and asked if I had firearms. Although I was polite and did not display any signs of aggression whatsoever, all three staff were curt and rude to me. It is a sad state of our society that our culture has deteriorated to this type of treatment especially with an elderly person. The hospital management need to review the behaviour of their staff and realize they are dealing with sick people, not criminals!

He said that My Mother, had Dementia; because she thought she was in Bridgewater. I told the Dr. that is where I told her she was going because she was More Familiar with that Area Closest to FMH- The Dr. also said, she didn't know what year it was - However 30 years ago really wouldn't have been any different in those regards. I told the Dr. that My Mother Usually is Awake Most of the Night and Sleeps until Dinner time. Though she was getting up NEARLY Everyday for her Dinner and Supper..and was Able to Feed herself WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS- and Being Bathed TWICE A WEEK, at Bayside... When she was Transferred to FMH/ Veteran's Unit... The Doctor also told me they couldn't keep her Awake Nor Feed her, and she was not getting Up. Complaing of a Lot of pain.. They Also Decreased her Insulin. Additionally the Dr. Told me to RE-Consider the End of Life Choices... What a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Apparently, she was Awake to Ring the Buzzer to use the Bathroom and Take Pills from what other staff told me... I asked and COACHED them to get her up a Few times to call me- (One Staff Member said "the Only Problem is we would have to get her up in her Wheelchair") They Did get her Up for Supper, and she told me she was Not Getting Enough to Eat. I asked her to get up and call me that next day; which she did- and I thought she was getting Back on Track. However; everytime I do not call for a Day or 2 they tell me she is Not Getting Up when I do call. Nor do I like her Using the "Nurses Station Phone" and she is not able to use or Reach a Regular Phone. The Therapist Happens to be on Vacation for March Break. They didn't/ and Probably still don't have a Clock on the Wall- though there was one sent with ALMOST NOTHING ELSE from the Nursing Home. She is in a Shared Room - and has a Space, as Big as a Closet and they could not put her 32in TV on her side of the Room. I Believe I Now, Know -Why there were a FEW EMPTY BEDS! TERRIBLE DISAPPONTMENTS -Nor am I Permitted to Visit - because of the VAX TYRANNY! That is a Hard Pill to Swallow - in One Week. Just 2 Days before she left to go to Fisherman's Memorial.. I had taken her for a 2.5 hour Outing -and she was Absolutly Fine- Sitting Up and Staying Awake. I Feel Like My Mother was Given a Death Sentence! One Month Update: The Doctor called (the 2nd time), - because he was in AGAIN ONE EARLY MORNING and Seen a Can of Pop on her Table. The Doctor, told me that he will be the Decision Maker if My Mother is to be Resuscitated. He would not allow me to speak -and Hung Up in My Ear! I called to ask a Worker how my Mother is Doing: and they tell me "She is Doing Good". I ask if she was up for Dinner - "No" I ask if she was up for Supper- "No She's Been too Sleepy and We Can't Wake her." I ask if she's had a Bath. NO - She had a Bedbath Yesterday. My Mother tells me, They Don't ask her if she wants to get up... they just say here's your meal! My Mother believes the Staff Won't Bath her, because they think she is too sick! The Doctor has Taken her OFF her Insulin All Together; and she's Constantly Complaining she is Hungry and not getting enough to eat. The Grapes I left went Moldy in the Fridge..Though I told the Staff I brought them in a couple of times... and My Mother Loves Grapes!!! Too Many Problems and not enough space to list them all. My Concerns and Requests were IGNORED! Things can always get worse; and Fisherman's Memorial Hospital will Not Disappoint You in that Regard. CBC Fifth Estate Investigation Report: This hospital reports substantially more adverse events tied to nursing care for medical problems than an average hospital of the same size. This indicator measures the number of patients per 1,000 who develop problems tied to nursing care such as urinary tract infections, bed sores, pneumonia or broken bones. Nurses are not solely responsible but studies show a strong link to low nurse staffing levels. In spite of budget cuts, and the fact that for some things or at some times we have to travel to either South Shore Regional Hospital (Bridgewater) or to Halifax, Fisherman's continues to do a great job. The Emergency room triage nurses and doctors have been mostly superb -- patient, knowledgeable and kind. In an area where new residents can't always find a GP, the Emergency docs often act as the principal gateway into our healthcare system. I would fight very hard to keep Fisherman's going for residents and visitors alike.
