The checkout gal, Mango, was way more interested in her phone than trying to help us locate the item. When we checked out after finding the item (with the wonderful help from another employee in a different area) we were fortunate enough to go through Mango's line again. She was apologetic when she realized who was at her register. It's not a huge place, but it is *packed* floor to ceiling with nifty goodies from around the world. I was really impressed by the range and quality of merchandise, and along with that the price range. One expects to pay a premium for fair trade, hand-made, and artisan products. SIS isn't exactly an exception - things aren't cheap here - but the prices are very reasonable and you get good value for your money, especially considering that your purchases support decent standards of living for the people who make the merchandise. I bought some candles and soaps for a birthday present, but it was hard to choose. There were a lot of kitchen items that were tempting, figurines and knick-knacks that were actually really cool, a lot of fabric items, and even a few musical instruments. The amount of quality stuff here is really impressive, and I'd bet you could find something for almost anyone. Moreover, I had a lovely chat with the owner. Her enthusiasm for her work, and her store, and for helping people find something unique was evident. This made the experience even better. I definitely will be back next time I'm in the area.
