I only come for the dirty rice during Thanksgiving (rice dressing for the non-southerners) Its a small grocery store chain thats been around since the mid 90's owned by the Vuong family. I went on a Tuesday afternoon, so maybe there's more @ lunch time or on the weekend. I got the oxtails (which came with rice), cabbage & Mac & cheese. There was only one person working the counter, tho 2 others were visible. After a 20 + min wait I got waited on. The lady before me complained as well saying she travels from Alief to shop here. When they opened there were a large number of Blacks working the meat department, where are they? Guess this is one of those Black Jobs lost that Trump was talking about. I love coming to Pyburns after each trip. Good clean veggies, fruit, and fresh made sausages and stuffed chicken wings is on the menu with some fresh , and smoked Turkey necks. It's just me so it was a little challenging not to buy more!! The service was great and very fast. I haven't tried their food items however, I love going here for their meats. I'm from Louisiana and a lot of items that I'm used to there I can't find here in Texas. Well until my daughter told me about Pyburns I know can enjoy my turkey parts, pig feet, seven steaks and the list goes on. They have these tea cakes that are so delicious as well. The cashiers are always friendly and that makes a difference going into an establishment and being greeted as soon as you walk through the doors. I go to Pyburns for the meat market and hot plate lunches. You pay separately for the hot meals. They are a little expensive but you get a lot of good food, I really like the oxtails. The meat market has the best boudin sausage in SE Texas. They have hot to mild and several in between. The boudin stuffed pork chops are world class restaurant quality. One quarter of my family are Louisiana coonasses and I know good boudin! Everything at the meat counter is great and the butchers are friendly and helpful. I go on my way home to Sugar Land, from MD Anderson cancer treatments. Usually there are dozens of people in the place and I am the only white guy. I have not encountered one unfriendly person. It's not the typical red sauce you get at other places but had this amazing mix of veggies including bell pepper and carrot that was delicious! Okay so I actually like the unique Cajun options I can get here. The boudin is not bad. I find that somethings are overpriced like the chicken wings and drumsticks. The smoked sausage is really good in gumbo. However gir the life of me, I can not understand why they would put this sticker paper on the link. This store is small but efficient. Kim's Kitchen is located inside and sells hot food. In the back of the store is a butcher shop. The variety of meat is what you will find at any store, but their specialties is what keeps me coming back. The boudain, hot or mild, stuffed chicken breasts, pork chops, Cornish hens and bell peppers are always fresh and delicious. These items are seasoned and stuffed with the mild boudain rice. Very yummy. I was skeptical about this location because I'm a die hard fan of the original Pyburns on Almeda, but I must say that I am happy coming here. I've gotten other items such as crackers, milk and beer but I wouldn't actually do any real grocery shopping because this is more of a "run in" store. Now the meat is a different story. I can go crazy in the meat department. Their meat is always fresh. I will warn you that this store can get pretty crowded on the weekends. They have a nice size parking lot, but when you've got half of Southwest Houston preparing to BBQ, pack your patience as you find an available space. This location sales rancid, spoiled meat and then doesn't want to refund their customers when they come in to address it. I got 3 oxtail plates for about $14 each, with various sides. Unfortunately the didn't have macaroni and cheese when I went. The yams, greens, and corn were good. And oxtails were decent as well. Cornbread was cold and tasted like it was made last week. The service was not good and I felt extremely rushed... with NOBODY behind me. Been going to this store since they opened. They have really good hot plates. They have good sales on a lot of their items. They just started selling this to die for banana pudding. The reason for only 4 stars(would have been 5) is the customer service is not so good not really bad but not good. In other words, with the exception of a couple of guys in the meat department(who are really friendly and always smiling) they don't greet you are say thank you,especially the cashiers. I'm a country girl that grew up going to the Original Pyburn on Almeda. The guy in the meat department back then was a native Louisiana cajun who knew his Boudin. This location on Fondren has people working in the back who clearly can't make Authentic Boudin. The taste was too liver like and no sight of green onions. I've even had sour Boudin from here. Do not buy BOUDIN here go to the Almeda location. read more

I went here for the cooked food and omg I was pleasantly surprised how good the food was and how much they gave you. I got oxtails, cabbage, cornbread,and red beans and rice. All for $9.99 When I say it was way too much food to eat at one time but it was worth every bite. The oxtails were tender, red beans were seasoned so well and it had good sausage in it. It's definitely a meal that you won't have to eat anything else for the day. It was very satisfying, inexpensive, and the customer service was great. I don't come here for the market, that doesn't really interest me that much when I have so many other locations that are much cheaper. Though I will say I like the butcher shop at the back of the store. I see that most of the reviews here, like mine, are for Kim's Kitchen, a little restaurant and a bit of a diamond in the rough situated right next to the entrance when you walk inside. I've had their chicken tenders, the boudain balls, and their swai and they are all very tasty. My family has also had the oxtail and they love it! Totally would recommend the boudain balls to anyone!! The one criticism I have would be that the breading on the chicken doesn't seem to fully stick as every time I get chicken tenders at least part of the breading is missing. And there is always ALWAYS a line when I come, and that's usually a good thing when it comes to restaurants! I will definitely keep coming back for the stuff! read more
