I stayed at a hotel nearby, and visited this gym recently. I went to Gymbox earlier in the week,…read morebut I found it significantly underwhelming compared to this gym. First this gym is 24 hours, so props to that. Second, it has 2 floors, a ground floor for mostly cardio and the lower level for weight training and a crossfit/functional weight area. The price is reasonable too, but the sign-up process is pretty tedious. Because the facility is so automated, so have to enter a code to get someone to show you around the place. There's a couple of kiosks available to sign up, but I recommend just signing up via the website if possible. I didn't understand how to get into the place until I had it explained to me, since I come from the US, where they have no such automated door system in place. Apparently you enter in a code, press the OK button, and you step inside the pod, and the other side will open when the first side closes. In addition to being more automated, it also reduces the airflow from the outside, which I presume indirectly saves them air conditioning and heating, though the airflow actually might be a drawback when you go downstairs to do barbell / free weight training, because it kind of smells slightly. On the whole, considering it's in London, and the alternatives are simultaneously more expensive and smaller, this is actually a good deal. But even though the weights are re-racked (which doesn't happen all the time stateside), they were all in the wrong place. It's almost like people just put it wherever there was space, no matter whether it was even a matching or pair space for the dumbbells. But once again, for the price and location, this is really small potatoes. I could see myself going here more often if I were staying here longer for a visit.

The class is very small but it allows for individual attention from the teacher. I consider myself to be in decent shape but there were some things in this class I could barely do! I mean that in a good way the class was great and definitely an intense workout, I was sore for almost 5 days afterwards. The classes are a bit pricey but I think it is worth it since the classes are so small.

This gym had a much needed refurbishment at the start of the year, sadly the new colour scheme is…read moregrey....and grey....with splashes of red here and there....oh how I long for the bright colour scheme of old! I've been a member of this gym for about 7 years now (you wouldn't think it to look at me!) and things have definitely changed. Sadly not all for the better. The childrens pool seems to be out of order a few times a month (not a big deal to me, don't have kiddies but can see it being a deal breaker if you get junior all the way there and they don't have the fun pool to play in!). Changing rooms are kept pretty clean - you need to have a padlock for your locker - and they've tried to keep an area of the changing room child free....though sadly most of the kiddies (and their grown ups!) don't seem to be able to read the sign.... A victim of the refurb was the ladies weights area. I'm not sure why, it was pretty well used. Clearly the spin studio and 'skill zone' areas were far more important to them so now we just have to put up with being amongst the grunty men while we tone our muscles....another downside is that the weights machines do feel somewhat cramped together now as the space has been reallocated for other uses. The upside - there are lots of treadmills (though at peak times - like Monday evenings - you'll be lucky to get straight onto one!), bikes, cross trainers and rowing machines....the spin studio is now enclosed so you don't have to hear the instructor waffling on and on nor have two different types of music trying to seep through your headphones! The skill zone has new and very entertaining trixster bikes (simulates a mountain bike course for those of you afraid of the outdoors like me...) TRX training systems and a skill wall (you know, the lights come on and you have to jump around hitting them off....I dunno the proper name!). There are plenty of tennis courts (book in advance), a large pool with lane swimming, For the popular classes (like spin) you'll need to book in advance and get there early or you'll find all the bikes reserved with towels and water bottles! I haven't tried many of the other classes, the schedule isn't great for someone who can't get there til 7pm of an evening, and having had previous miserable class experiences I am wary of some of the instructors, nonetheless the classes seem popular so I guess it's just me!! Money wise you're going to pay for this upgrade in facilities! Current full membership is around £83 a month although you can sign up for a year and reduce that a little (be aware of when your cancellation date is though otherwise you will automatically get rolled over for another year!).

And their kids facilities are great. Both creche and classes. Current favourite new toy there is the Trixter Xdream videogame cycle - you have a videogame screen in front of you, and you race against computer generated competitors or real people. Resistance decreases and increases according to gradient, terrain and gears. I should be there now, really, racing against the machine - instead of slumped here, writing about all the food I've been eating.

As I have never done anything like this before, I opted for hoops as it was supposedly better for a beginner. The class had 5 people in it a mix of advanced, intermediate and first timers, thank goodness there was another person who had never done it! This is not an easy workout, you are using all upper body strength and core to pull the rest of you into the hoop. The teachers were so nice and very helpful, but at the end of the class youre the one getting up there. You then go through a series of moves and at the end finish it in the full combination and they take pictures! Which was a really nice touch. You finish with some deep stretches with a partner which felt amazing. As I right this the next day, I cant move my arms higher than my keyboard and am using two hand to pick up a cup of coffee, but that just is a tribute to a fantastic and different way of working out. But also goes to show what incredible strength acrobatics takes. Aerialand is located in a school not far from Ravenscourt Park, a little hard to find but look for the signs inside the building.

Valentina, the owner, is amazing, full of energy, pizazz, and creativity. The student performances she coordinates are terrific. Oh, and I forgot to mention the hula hooping, pole dancing, burlesque, rope, anti-gravity yoga, and aerial silks classes? I love Aerialand!
