I finally made it out to Farm on Ogden after contemplating a few times post completion of workouts…read moreat Lawndale Christian Fitness Center. Luckily, it was open until 6:00 PM the Saturday of my visit or I would have prolonged it until who knows when. Farm on Ogden stopped me while enroute to a restaurant the evening of my visit; offering me a much healthier choice to eat in comparison. I visited with an interest of purchasing a salad similar to one I had purchased days ago at Green Tomato Cafe, a cafe attached to Lawndale Christian Health Center. But more importantly I wanted to see what produce items were available for purchase. My introduction to Farm on Ogden was at the 2018 Lawndale 5k where it was mentioned that the proceeds from the race support the farm, which at the time I had no idea of. In time I learned about it after visits to Lawndale Christian Health Center - Fitness Center & Green Tomato Cafe. This visit felt like an adventure because rarely do I encounter or let alone visit an indoor farm. Highly intrigued by the presence of its greenhouse and aquaponics system which I will have to sign up for a tour in the future to learn about. As much as I wanted to ask questions about it at the time of my visit, the time was limited and I was quite positive that I would learn about it in the future eventually. Anything that contributes to the growth of a community by offering healthier foods, jobs, and education I am all for. And Farm on Ogden does so with its partnership with Lawndale Christian Health Center and Chicago Botanic Garden - Windy City Harvest. There are opportunities for anyone including veterans and adults with criminal backgrounds. If you drive, there are no worries about parking because it has its own private lot with street parking available as well. And if you do not drive, yet familiar with Chicago Transit Authority the farm sits right outside of CTA Central Park - Pink line making it an easy commute to-and-from. I made it no secret to one of the employees that I would be returning in the near future after what I discovered. Even though I live outside of the Lawndale community, it is heartwarming knowing that my contributions to not only Farm on Ogden, but Lawndale Christian Health Center are meaningful. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

So be advised that this is a little out of the way, but really just a little or you can take the "L" and get off at Central Park. If you make your way to Riot Fest, you can find this easy peasy. The payoff, you get to support a jobs and teaching program. It's a partnership between Lawndale Christian Health and the Chicago Botanic Garden's Windy City Harvest. What else do you get, a bevy of freshly grown (most there) vegetables, tomatoes, lettuces, kale, radishes, peppers, beets on and on. If it's not grown on site they tell you where it came from. They had some pineapple and grapefruit, we know those weren't grown here. Pricing is very reasonable, better than you find at some of the neighborhood farmers markets. I bought a healthy bag of stuff for 16 bucks, and that includes one of their reusable tote bags for 2 bucks. So glad to see a worthwhile program that brings healthy food and a jobs program to the Lawndale neighborhood. Definitely repeatable.

They had the most amazing veggies and fresh fruits from around the Midwest. We purchased various varieties of peppers, and of course, my favorite is the Gypsy Yellow bell pepper! I found a very rare Round Red Pepper, which is a Hungarian variety. The butter beans were so delicious, I used them in a soup, what I made in my daughter's kitchen. We bought some baked goods from a vendor. The Almond croissant was delicious, but the plain croissant was completely uneatable, because it was dry as a rock! The French baguette was delicious. We used it for dipping in olive oil, which my daughter brought home from Croatia. The Farmers Market is open from Spring till early Fall. I can't wait to go back when I'm in Chicago again!

This market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7a-1p. It is a market that I'd recommend coming on the earlier end as it does get super crowded and most vendors do sell out towards the early afternoon. For this particular experience we went around 7:30am. For parking you can park in the Chicago History Museums parking lot, the booths have a validation card that help lower the costs down when you go and pay. (Be sure to pick one up at the Green City Market booth as you leave.) There are so many goodies, I don't even know where to start. I guess I'll start with my favorite part, it is an outdoor market and it is pet friendly. We brought our girl, Luna along and she made so many incredible new friends while walking around. It's so fun to see folks walking with their pups, and so many pup vendors for them to enjoy as well. We started our morning off by looking at some of the produce and baked goods, and those tend to get bought out first. We got to a few booths around 8am and they were already starting to sell out of baked goods. Once of my favorites was the pastry from the Eden booth. It had a variety of carrots and whipped ricotta cream on it. The perfect light and savory treat to share. We also grabbed a quiche and a breakfast sandwich to share from other booths, and this is when it started getting rather busy as the market. After buying our produce, we circled back to grab a grilled cheese for the road. When we walked up the line was starting to form, and by the time we got our sandwich (we waited 45 minutes for it) there was a line allllll the way around and more. Some folks waited a goood about of time for it, but the quality and taste were just the same no matter how long you wait because they crank those bad boys out fresh. We ended our morning by purchasing some fresh potatoes and leeks, along with freshly made potato Perogis from Daisies to make for dinner. Although it's quite the distance to drive every weekend, it's always a treat and we love supporting the local booths at the market. Can't wait for our next visit.

Now Yelpers, listen up, do you SUFFER from Hayfever like I do??…read moreHere's a secret to save you money and make you less miserable: Buy local honey at this market (a bottle is $10--way cheaper than OTC Zertec or Claritin) and eat a tablespoon a day. Before you know it, your allergies will be gone. Why?! Because the bees roam around the city and pollinate from the same plants that give your that runny nose and those itchy eyes. Think of it as a painless immunization. The beekeeper has her beehives right behind at her Carpenter Street house. If you really get into it, you can work a deal with the caring beekeeper to purchase a huge bucket for several months. And the honey is BEE-LICIOUS! (yes, that was lame). More Good News: Gosh, what a cute cultural market! The salespeople are so sweet and friendly. The love for what they specialize in or do shines through in their smiles. The market is like none of the others in the city due to its Latin American cultural roots and flavors. They have private, original art for sale (meet the artisans themselves), fresh vegetables, breakfast items, coffee/tea/mate, delicious-looking pastries, dog treats, and my favorite...local honey products. They even have a great looking website (listed above). The Bad News: While it is VERY small (10 tents possibly), they have a great variety of local products. Bring cash! :) The VERY Bad News: You'll have to wait until next year ;(. The market only runs (well this past year) on Sundays from July 27th until October 26th 9 am to 2 pm. ---- Featured in the Weekly Yelp-Chicago "Farmers Market Almanac" on June 2, 2009: http://www.yelp.com/weekly?editorial_id=W8Z6vofGex0KswvVq8Uxhw

Can't wait to go back next week and try the fresh bread, pastries, vegetarian tamales and tarts. I figure we will take our own "carry out" bags to do good for the environment and take a blanket with so we can turn our Farmer's Market walk into a Sunday picnic. Clusters of tents are spread out a bit. You could miss a few if you don't walk around. The market only has a few vendors, but they are really great. I love going to look at the flowers and usually grab a pastry and coffee to take home. There are several produce and meat/egg stands, but I find everything to be a little too pricey for me to justify buying much. However, they do triple match Illinois Link! I wish the market had a few more vendors, as it gets crowded quickly and the lack of competition favors the high prices, but it is a nice thing to do each weekend. I appreciate that it is dog friendly so I can bring my dog with me to get some socialization in.

As a dedicated back of the can reader, I'm often heard to say, "Don't throw away that can!". I certainly did say that after using this apparently newly introduced selection. I'd like to take credit for the fresh bright taste of the tomatoes in the dish that night but it was thanks to Hunt's. Needless to say, returning to the store to stock up on more yielded nada that week. But now it is purchased and in the kitchen cabinet.
