I have a child that has been attending martial arts classes at Umas (United Martial Arts Systems)…read moreand its a good fit. I'm reviewing this based on the younger 5-8 age group Little Dragons and Junior Ninjas, but not teens or adult age groups. And I won't be commenting about competitive sparring & tournaments because this hasn't been an option yet. I don't know the actual martial arts style, but I assume it is Japanese based (not Chinese Gung Fu, Korean Tae Kwon Do, or Filipino Kali). The atmosphere for this school is friendly & nurturing. This is not a school that teaches students to be hostile & aggressive, nor is this the method they teach. Students are taught to use self control and be respectful to the instructors, each other, and the people in their lives (e.g. parents & family, teachers & schoolmates, etc.). The main instructor is Mr. Miles. He and the other instructors are dedicated and well experienced. The lessons teach students to give it their all in class and if something doesn't go their way to keep trying. The great thing here is Mr. Miles applies this to real life by having students continue this mindset at at home & in school. Umas is a great place for your youngsters to work on self discipline, work on self control, & teaches mastering something is not the end but continues on.

I was told to email management about my situation just to be told no. I contact management again and explained everything and the only way to cancel would be if I moved 25 miles away or of a disability. I'm so pissed because things happen all the time unexpectedly and I definitely wasn't expecting to change jobs and I'm willing to show proof of new employment but no one is trying to hear what I have to say. They're only concerned with getting payments. If I wouldn't known that when I first inquired about the lessons, I WOULD'VE NEVER SIGNED UP because things happen. This program is not for parents who don' have helping hands to help with taking the child to practice.

I really wanted to love this place. I saw on their website that they offer a free two week trial…read moreand I have been interested in kickboxing and boxing classes. I signed up online and received an email response the next day. I conversed with Chad via email and a woman on the phone. They both were very nice. Additionally, Joey gave me the run down of membership during my consultation but failed to give me a tour of the place until I asked. Now on to why I give this place only 2 stars. The place is NOT sanitary, well kept or air conditioned. The treadmill has duct tape on the belt. There is one large fan cooling the room. The mats and equipment that we used during classes are not cleaned. I personally attended a boot camp and cardio boxing class. After each class of at least 10 people sweating profusely on the equipment and mats, they were simply returned to their starting location. Additionally, the initial bag that I used for cardio boxing had visible sweat/slob stains and what appeared to be white vomit stains. Boot camp was good. It started late (which seems to be a trend at this place), but it was a good and challenging workout. The instructor took time to demo each station and observed, corrected and encouraged participants throughout the workout. Cardio boxing sucked. I'm sorry but I have no other words to describe my experience. Class was supposed to start at 6:00a. We twirled a jump rope with one hand and jogged in place for over 20 minutes!! I tried to actually jump rope to get a more intense workout but Baba (the instructor) informed me to twirl the rope instead. We did not start boxing until 6:35a. Then, Baba did not demo each move (only a few) and was not motivating or encouraging. I did not know if I had correct form because he was not helpful. After the boxing portion we were to do abdominal work. It was now 7:00a, so if you actually needed to leave on time and maybe go to work, sorry you would have missed out. We did ab workouts for about 10 minutes. The restroom was semi clean, did not have any soap and the shower curtain is see-through. I wanted to attend cardio kickboxing to see how my experience would be, but honestly I don't think I'll return even though I still have a week left. FYI: * $99 down; $99/mo for cardio only classes * $129/mo for all classes (MMA, Muay Thai, etc) * Gym is only open during scheduled classes or Open Mat times * First time boxing gloves are free. Each additional time $3 rental fee

GENERAL ASSESSMENT Our overall assessment is that Shaolin…read moreInstitute does an amazingly successful job fulfilling its promise as a learning experience for both the body and mind. As we have so far experienced it, Shaolin Institute indeed teaches a "way of life" in which students can experience gratifying physical achievement, whether in Tai Chi or Kung Fu, while also exercising and expanding mindfulness. One of the most appealing aspects of Shaolin Institute is the frequent reference before and after classes regarding how specific cultural, historical, medical, and scientific achievements are directly relevant for learning and appreciating martial arts. TEACHING ASSESSMENT It is impressive that Shaolin Institute exceeds expectations in basically every category used to evaluate teachers. Below are our summaries of Shaolin Institute's multifaceted teaching strengths. CURRICULUM * SI teachers follow the SI curriculum. * SI teachers choose activities for each student relevant to the SI curriculum and each student's level of achievement. * When feasible, SI teachers sometimes helpfully group students together to learn and practice as a group the forms they have previously learned. INSTRUCTION * SI teachers provide direction so that each student knows what to focus on during class. * SI teachers present new forms clearly and logically, and helpfully demonstrate new forms. * SI teachers provide feedback and re-teach forms when necessary. Teachers provide opportunities for students to practice new forms both with and without supervision. MOTIVATION * SI teachers show genuine concern for the students. * SI teachers project a positive, encouraging tone for the classroom experience. * SI teachers establish a level of difficulty, suited for each student's level, which encourages success. SI teachers provide good verbal praise, as well as critique as needed. COMMUNICATION * SI teachers always demonstrate enthusiasm in what they are teaching. * SI teachers explain and demonstrate forms clearly. * SI teachers respond graciously and substantively to questions. EXPECTATIONS * SI teachers communicate expectations to students. * SI teachers listen to students' feedback during class and adjust their teaching pace and content accordingly. * SI teachers encourage students to participate inextracurricular community opportunities, which isimportant for the students' confidence as well as the school's exposure. METHODOLOGY & MATERIALS * SI teachers often vary how they conduct classes, for example by describing the forms, including their origins, applications, etc., and/or by physically demonstrating the forms. Both methods are helpful, especially for students who learn in different ways. * SI teachers sometimes provide supplemental resources, such as video recordings of the classes, which can be exceptionally helpful for students who want to practice at home. EVALUATIVE ACTIVITIES * SI teachers monitor and give feedback on student progressduring each individual class. * SI teachers give oral evaluative comments, as well as sometimes grades or scores. * SI teachers are available for and sometimes proactively create opportunities for one-on-one progress discussions with students. CLASS ENVIRONMENT * SI teachers clearly communicate requirements for attitude and behavior, notably by emphasizing the SI student creed and the rituals of class beginnings and endings. TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTIONS * SI teachers make an effort to know each student as an individual. * SI teachers routinely work to promote positive self-image in students. * SI teachers routinely create a classroom climate in which students are encouraged to grow and assume personal responsibility for their growth. LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR * SI teachers are observed routinely cooperating graciously with their teaching peers, demonstrating authentic respect for one another. * SI teachers are often observed sharing ideas and methods with their fellow teachers. * SI teachers are observed regularly seeking to advance their own growth. This continuing education, observed by the students, is motivating to the students and demonstrates how we are all learning and growing.

Initially upon moving to the area, I began at a different studio and was very unhappy with my experience. In search of a better facility, I located Taekwondo Center of McDonough and explained my concerns from the last class. James, one of the instructors, was very patient in answering all of my questions. After consideration, I decided to give this studio a shot and boy am I glad I did! Before beginning the private lesson that I had scheduled for only my children, I was able to watch some of the other students in action during a belt/physical test. This inspired me to take the class for myself as well! We've finished our quick-start program this week and my children and I have all felt great and motivated after each class. They play energizing music during the warm-up and the exercises are fun! Classes are separated by age groups but they're integrated between all belt levels and I really appreciate that higher level students in their black-belt club help instruct newer students in class, too. It's very much a team atmosphere. Their motto is "A black belt is just a white belt that never quit" and I really like the focus on respect and discipline. They alternate instructors through the week between Master Huynh and the instructor James. I've really enjoyed classes by both and I value that they have the traditional values of martial arts in their program. If you're looking to challenge yourself and learn the true art, this is the place to go!
