So much so that we got a few bottles to go. They don't have food (but wine and cheese pairing) but that's not a problem because you can order from next door and I'm just going to say...wow! This was our first visit to this rustic tasting room, and we had a nice experience. It was a Friday, right after opening, and we had the whole place to ourselves. The service was friendly, and my wife and I shared a traditional and custom flight. We thought that the wines were decent, some better suited to our palates than others, but well-made, nonetheless. We were fortunate to meet and speak with the owner who happened to be bringing in supplies and got a little more detail on the wines, than we did from our "winerista". He also mentioned that his niece opened a winery in Los Olivos (Story of Soil), which focused on wine styles a little out of our wheelhouse, but we thought we'd give that a try as well, and it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. Costa De Oro is a nice place with wine varietals for everyone's tastes. I recommend you stop in and give them a try when you're passing through the area.

Wes was patient, inquisitive, and not high minded about wine and how and when it can be enjoyed. I really appreciated the thoughtfulness and thoroughness with which he constructed the tasting, and the accompanying culinary pairings. For those considering the tour, the Ranchos De Ontiveros grounds are a little further out there, but you'll be rewarded with the majesty of the Santa Maria valley and the bucolic surrounds which envelop the landscape. I arranged for the ATV tour for my husband and I around noon, but encountered unexpected traffic on our way up from LA so our arrival time for our tour got delayed. Our tour guide Morrie was thankfully flexible and understanding with our late arrival and was welcoming when we finally arrived. After driving through lots of farmland, we arrive to The Gatehouse (the tasting room). It is a beautiful building with large windows looking out to the vineyards. It has such a relaxing vibe. Since it was a gorgeous day, we decided to settle our (high school and college) kids down at a table in the outdoor patio with lunch. After taking a few quick bites of our sandwiches so we had something in our stomachs before we started our tasting tour, we were on our way. Morrie is also the sommelier for Bien Nacido so not only was he was well versed in the history of the Bien Nadico vineyard, he was also very familiar with the wines and grapes and was very informative and we learned quite a lot. He took us up and down and all around the vast property and we were told about how Bien Nacido grows grapes for other wineries and that they lease out their land to other local growers for vegetables, fruits, etc. During our time there, we tasted the Rose, Chardonnay, a couple different Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Everything tasted great, but the Syrah was a bit intense for me personally. Morrie even picked some grapes off the vines for us to try. My husband and I really enjoyed our visit and left with way more than we planned to buy, and since we had so much fun, we made our college kid drive us to our hotel. We were greeted by Jordan, a friendly, informative, and helpful wine enthusiast. Jordan provided details of the grape, year/ season, and descriptions on each wine's flavor and suggested pairing. We learned a bit of history of Bien Nacido and the popularity of the grapes. We opted to do both tastings, estate and black label to fully experience their wines. Jordan started us off with a rose, well balanced and dry, perfect for hot summer days. Our favorites were the GSM blend, smooth, full flavor and the black label Syrah, full-body with notes of berries, and nice depth. We are so glad we took advantage of the FP perk and visited Bien Nacido, with a couple bottles of GSM and Rose in hand.

They specialize in Pinot and Chardonnay, which is common on the central coast, but Cambria's are special! Most of their vineyard is grown on rock bed that was once under water! So, every level of soil gives the grapes a unique flavor profile! There has even been fossils of whales found on their property! They are located just a few miles outside of Orcutt, Ca and it's so worth the drive. Yes, you can find their wines all over the world, but the tasting room offers a reserve flight that can only be sampled on premises. It's windy, narrow, and steep. Poor June was car sick from the drive. While the drive had some great views, we were anxious to get to Cambria. Upon arrival we noticed that the tasting room was uphill from the vineyards, providing a great view. I will say that the tasting room was cut into a little crevice so the views from the deck are limited. However, there is a beautiful private tasting area on a hill (when you turn into the winery parking lot) that would be a fantastic spot for good views. The wine was nice, plenty of variety. And I appreciated the unique guidance of wines from the staff. By providing your preferred wines and notes they will create a personal tasting menu. We also opted for the charcuterie for 2 which was perfect. Plenty of bites to accompany our tasting. Because wine is so unique it's always difficult to review, so I prefer to focus on the experience as a whole, and Cambria nailed it. We would definitely return and hang out by their fireplace. I got mine for $120. The box had 6 kinds of wine 2 of each bottle. I thought this was very thoughtful. The first bottle could be enjoyed for what it is and the second bottle can either be paired with a food you think it would match, or be given away to a friend or an enemy.... depending on if you thought it was delicious or not. This is a nice family owned winery. If you are in to wine tasting for the sole purpose of finding delicious wines then this is the winery for you. There are fancier and more entertaining wineries for sure, but this place makes some great wines! I have lived in the area for about 2 years and Kennith Volks name keeps coming up when I ask locals who their favorite wine maker is. I wish I could find out more about the history of the man, but you can tell a lot about him from his wines. They seem to be be carefully crafted and he uses a variety of grapes. One of the better varietals that was served ( in my opinion ) is the blaufränkisch. I believe I had this same varietal at wild horse winery in Atascadero. Because I mentioned this to the friendly woman doing the pours (sorry I forgot her name) she informed me that Volk used to work at wild horse as their winemaker. This is a a humble winery and it seems to be run by a devoted winemaker. Places like this make me fell happy and blessed to live in Santa Maria. If you are just passing through you may be more impressed by other larger wineries, but the quality of this wine is as good as any other place that I have tasted on the central coast, which is only about 35 different places.
