I need to preface any review of a gym or fitness spot with letting you know that I'm not exactly the most athletic or fit person in the world. I'm no couch potato. I'm always busy running around town doing things, but my workouts are pretty basic -- some time on the elliptical a few days a week, a few sessions of restorative yoga, that's about it. So, though I loved trying Pure Barre, I was in over my head. Since this studio is very new and the word is still getting out, I was fortunate to sign up for a class that ended up being a private lesson. I thus avoided totally embarrassing myself and also got plenty of personal encouragement and guidance from the owner/trainer there, Carrie Bristol. The workout is low impact on the joints, but it's not easy. The small movements are deceptive -- lots of reps and the fact that they seem to work muscles you're not used to using makes the whole thing feel pretty intense. The format blends together some elements of pilates, ballet, and weight training. One thing that I appreciated was that there is a good amount of stretching to balance out the more intense strengthening exercises. My abs ached a bit in a good way, and were really "awake/activated" when I went into yoga practice a day later. This was a positive thing. I think that some of the other exercises may have been a little too much for me. I totally had to stop early on one or two -- I was joking that I really needed a remedial class! Still, it was my first time, so I'm sure it hit me harder than it would if I went to the classes regularly. Carrie was very sweet, adaptable, and encouraging. The first class is even free, which is nice. The workout seems like it would be really effective, and might be easier for someone who was in even better shape to jump into. I'll probably be back, but I feel like I may need to work up to it a little more first! Whew!

    Inspiration for the Barre!

Teachers are really nice. Classes are good for all ages. At 62 I still felt included and teachers helped with modification when needed.

great but workouts get pretty easy after about 10. They're expensive, but will definitely help you become more flexible!

Service The service is amazing the instructor Elena remembered my name and really took time to fix my posture which was needed lol The workout is with popular music and a lot of focus on pulses and core. repetitive movements that doesn't seem a lot but after awhile you kinda feel the burn hah. The next day I was sore indeed Price There are certain packages. And I think with the new opening there are good deals right now. Audience Great to go with your friends or after/before class. You have both undergrads and young professionals that come by Recommendation/tips I would recommend it and it's right on campus

Certainly no Jillian Michaels, but I can hold my own. When I got there and met the instructor, she warned this was going to be quite advanced. Um, okay? I don't know what is considered advanced so I went along with it. It was SOO hard! I wanted to leave about 15 minutes in. But I hung in there, let my legs completely shake and quake and made it through. As we were leaving, several of the regulars said this was one of the hardest ones they've even done. While I'm super proud of myself for not running out of the room in tears, I would have appreciated finding out about the level prior to my getting there. I definitely would not have chosen it as my first time, but there was nothing on the website and nothing on the ClassPass app that gave this type of info. I'm debating on whether giving Barre another chance. I probably will, but maybe will find out if the class is suited for first timers.

I signed up for an early morning class, bad idea on my part! lol Pure Barre technique is a total body workout. It's a mixture of yoga, Pilates, weights, bands and dance all in one class. In fact I'm not even 100% certain I know what barre is. Always been curious about this place, that's located at the corner of 24 mile road and Schoenherr, so the other day I popped in on a whim. I knew going in that they sold Lululemon apparel and other fitness brands. I was in the market for some new leggings for my own yoga practice and for teaching. I walked in and was greeted my 3 very smiley and energetic employees. I told them I came in to check out what kind of apparel they sold. They were very welcoming and began to tell me that their birthday celebration was coming. I was in there on a Tuesday. The employees told me that beginning that Saturday they were offering discounts and deals on all their apparel. I told them great I'll just wait to purchase some thing this weekend then. They weren't put off by the fact that I didn't wanna buy anything right there in then and explain in more detail what kind of discounts they would have. Before I leftI checked out a few items and inquired about what exactly bar barre was. The one employee explained the outline of a typical barre class. I left more knowledgeable than when I first came in. Come Saturday I revisited this location and picked up 2 brand new pairs of yoga pants. One was priced at $98, the other was $90. Now for those of you who know me know that's too rich for my blood. But because it was their birthday bash I scored both pants at 40% off! What a steal it was! I wasn't certain how they would fit so I asked for a changing room and the employee pointed me down the hall to a very roomy changing room/bathroom. Both pairs fit perfectly. Both pair cost me only $112 before tax. One pair was Alo Yoga, the other pair was Beyond Yoga. For those of you who know fitness apparel, know how costly it can be. $112 was a Great deal! Especially considering I live in my work out gear. I won't just wear these for an hour or two a day. I will wear these every day-from the time I get up til the time I go to bed. Money well spend. The employees are super welcoming- even though I don't participate in their classes. I will visit in the future, when I'm in the market to add to my wardrobe. First class is always FREE, for those of you interested in barre.

Checking in was easy, and for my first time, it was so helpful to get a quick overview of the equipment and get full explanations and demos of the sets of exercises we were going to tackle. It was nice knowing what to expect ahead, and a good rotation through core, legs/glutes, obliques, and upper body. Lots of first or second timers and this class and I felt supported/guided. Instructor was walking around giving feedback, and asked ahead of time on permission for light touch corrections. It was a great pilates/strength training type workout! Adaptable to different experience and fitness levels. I'm definitely still sore two days out. I think most of the workout could be replicated at home with weights, bands, and sliders, but it's very fun to use the fancy reformer machine and be guided through / not have to plan or program a really effective workout.

Overall solidcore is my favorite workout I've ever tried and I'm totally a super fan for life. Unfortunately this wasn't my favorite studio. Pros: 1. Instructor was phenomenal (I took class with Jane S) - she offered a lot of versatility in the class, offered plenty of modifications and amplifications, and clearly knew what she was doing. Gave shoutouts to individuals within the class which I always really like. Probably one of the best solidcore instructors I've taken class with 2. The class itself is awesome as mentioned above. I'm just totally obsessed with solidcore - can't recommend it enough for someone looking for a challenging but high-energy full body strength class. Cons: 1. The reformers at this studio needed a major facelift. They were rusty, the rubber covering the strings was falling off, and I think they have smaller platforms than the standard sweatlana (although that may have been my imagination). I'm not sure if they were just really old or maybe purchased from another studio secondhand or something but they were soooo bad compared to the quality that I'm used to at solidcore 2. No lockers in this studio (just bins) which is obviously a risk for theft, etc. not the end of the world but I feel like having lockers is a pretty baseline request All in all, I don't live in Michigan full time so I likely won't be back anyway, but if I did live in the area I'd return as I just absolutely love the workout. Studio just needs some TLC
