Four of us had dinner. We sat outside in the courtyard next to a live green wall. Atmosphere was perfect. I started with a fresh mango margareta We split three appetizers: tuna tostada, ceviche, and grilled artichoke. The ceviche was fresh withy fish, tomatoes, onion. The grilled artichokes were so good I could have been in Rome, Italy. The shaved Parmesan complimented the artichokes grilled to perfection. The tostada was my friends favorite and I could ser why. It was crunchy with raw fresh tuna, slivers of leeks, avocado, and colorful sesame seeds. I got the fish and asked for lentils in the side and it was delicious. The portion was generous too. Side salad was ok. My friend got the salmon and it was even better. We split two desserts and they were worth the calories. Loved the ice cream. read more

I was in Mexico City with my mom, it was about 1,000 degrees outside (er, not really, but it was hot enough to melt a popsicle in mere seconds) and we needed a place for lunch. We wandered into to the little shopping center and and stumbled upon Puntarena. The atmosphere was relaxing with a lovely living wall so we decide to give it a go. We ordered Prosecco with our broken Spanish and our waiter was so understanding and patient with us. He even sent an English speaking waiter over to take our food order so he could be sure he got it right. I'm vegan and started with "yo soy vegana" and they were extremely helpful, but said "for you, we'd recommend the salad with tomatoes, avocados, and hearts of palm." I'm pretty used to just eating salads when I'm out so didn't mind and my mom ordered the shrimp salad (asked for grilled, but arrived fried). The hearts of palm salad was AMAZING. It was so fresh, the flavors were vibrant and played well together. There was some pickled onion on top and I would actually go back to order this again. The dressing that was included was a bit spicy, tasted very fresh, and the perfect compliment. They brought us a bread basket which they assured me was all vegan bread and I noticed that it was different from the other tables. It was a lovely lunch and I'm glad we decided to chance it. What first brought our attention to this little courtyard was the restaurant Azul, however after being told the wait would be 1.5 hrs we sidled over to Puntarena and decided to give it a try after a quick menu peruse. The dining room really opens up as you move back to an uncovered courtyard with a green, leafy living wall. The server was very gracious and helped us out by understanding English. Even though we our group initially came to Mexico with the conviction that we probably wouldn't want to eat any seafood, we decided that at a restaurant of this caliber we could give it a try. I ordered a seared ahi tuna with soy butter sauce which was grilled perfectly with a salty and savory butter that complimented the tuna perfectly. The mashed potatoes were creamy and a nice compliment to the fish. Another group member ordered the spicy tuna tostadas and had nothing but good things to say about them. We had to ask a few times for some more bread as well as the check at the end, but otherwise our server was very helpful and the food made its way out quickly. First of all this gem was within walking distance of the Airbnb I was staying at so if was a score for me. The ambience was very eye catching you can not miss the huge "living wall" that has a pathway and a bike to that wall, very open setting so it's a night where it may be a little chilly bring a coat since it is a open roof. Which is a nice contrast when you are in the streets of Mexico city and able to walk into a place that makes you feel far away. The fish that my boyfriend and I ordered was spectacular and it doesn't come in your traditional plate but a serving sauce pan, which we thought was a nice touch, unfortunately the sides are purchase separately which can add up but other than that the food was up to par. We were trying to get a table at Azul but failed. Too many people waited. A waiter recommended us Puntarena. I don't know why there weren't many people in it, but it does have fascinating environment and nice service. The sea food is fresh and delicious. We also ordered several dishes other than sea food, such as the snow crab rolls, fried Japanese rice and short ribs (love it!). All tastes really good! In addition, we tried the drinks there. I didn't drink very often so I can't tell whether the drinks were good or not. I just can say I quite enjoyed the cocktail there. read more

Puntarena is a good fish restaurant in Centro Historico. It was easy to get a table for six as this restaurant is not as busy as its more famous neighbour Azul. The interior of Puntarena is beautiful; a wonderfully tall courtyard has a moveable roof to protect from the elements in case of rain, and the far wall is a field of various vertically planted grasses. I ordered the Seabass frontera ceviche which was too citrusy for my liking. I much preferred the spicy tuna tostada. The seared tuna is also a good choice, and the butter mahi mahi was also great. The reason I gave this place 4 stars and not 5, is that even with the great ambiance, the service could have been a bit better and the value for money is not as good as many other restaurants in CDMX. read more

We visit México City once a year from NYC. Puntarena is my all time favorite restaurant! The food is always amazing and consistent. However, I must admit the service is so top notch that is also why I want to go back. They make you feel so welcomed and included. Actually, this year when we walked in...one of the servers ran up to us and said "Dar una buena acogida" (Welcome Back)! He actually remembered us from the year before. Excellent food and service but overly expensive. I ate here with a colleague on a Tuesday evening and the place was empty whereas the Azul in the same building had a wait of 30 minutes for a table. A highlight was the buratta salad (380 pesos). This was beautifully presented and delicious. I would suggest Puntarena if you are looking for a quite restaurant and cost is no problem. read more

Okay... So this is a quick hit of what I think. Ambiance is amazing, the place is a very cool local with awesome decor and good vibes. Ordered sushi, soup, and spicy shrimp pasta... Sushi was okay but mushy... Soup, well they never served the soup and then the dinner was sub par. This place is known for seafood. We split the anchovy and octopus appetizers and they were very good! I had shrimp tacos that were good and the octopus cocktail. For me, the sauce in the octopus cocktail was a little too sweet and heavy but it is pretty standard for Mexico. Someone else in the group got the short rib and it was delicious! The atmosphere is great as it is located in the Downtown building which has another restaurant and shops. The roof is open but can be closed if it rains. Tried a table at the restaurants across the way but it was an hour wait. We were hungry tourists and so Puntarena took us under their wing. We were greeted with a shot of Mezcal which was great. Our eyes were bigger than our stomach and after the first course arrived, we realized we ordered too much food. We didn't expect the portions to be so large! Our waiter came to the rescue and there was no problem in retracting a main course and splitting one. Not only that, the Chef cooked the fresh fish we kept on the order to perfection and with the sublime spices - it was delectable! And, don't forget the Panna Cotta! Genius! Our waiter took great care of us, as did the whole team of employees. We had a fabulous experience and although we are only in this wonderful city for a short time, we will be back before we leave. What a surprise and what a wonderful restaurant. The courtyard makes for a wonderful long lunch. The seafood is amazing - we were a large group and ordered a selection of seafood starters - sashimi, ceviche, etc all were delicious and presented beautifully. The mains were equally amazing - I had the miso cod - the portion itself was very large and the fish was prepared excellently with a creamy, almost buttery finish. The patio area where you are lead to eat is surrounded by smokers. We were taken to an "indoor" area where you can still smell the cigarette smoke. When our food arrived, the seafood was very over cooked. Especially the pulpo tacos, it was so roasted that you had to chew at it like jerky. We found this place online thx Google.... when got there we nearly sat our selfs down, that should of been a sign..... our appetizer we good I got a shrimp and octopus cocktail and my wife a very small tostada de marlin (fish). For the meal my wife got a dragon roll that was just ok I was going to get the rib-eye but the waiter insisted on me getting the lobster in some kind of sauce...... my food was good in flavor but I did not get full and I didn't know it costed 3 times more than anything on the menu.... that was not a big deal but the waiter should of mentioned it..... our service kind of sucked but we were ok with it.... after we paid and still left a tip, the server comes up to me asking me for more tip and basically telling me how he deserved more tip than what I left him...... wow....... No Bueno! We had been very excited to dine here after sitting in the wine bar above the restaurant a week earlier and seeing what we thought was great looking food being consumed by the diners below. We finally had the opportunity to try it ourselves but were so let down. Right away we had issues. We wanted to sit on the patio but they had loud electronic music playing which competed with the jazz music coming from the indoor room. The cacophony was too much. We asked to be moved inside. We were sat by the gin bar where the cocktail menu was posted on the bar and the cocktails sounded too good to resist. All 3 of us ordered a cocktail. 2 of us ordered the pineapple cocktail, which literally had the word pineapple right in the name. We watched as the waiter made our cocktails and he never put any pineapple in our drinks. in fact the "pineapple" cocktails appeared to be a mix of rosemary, juniper berries and gin which was obviously the cocktail listed directly above the pineapple cocktail on their menu. I stopped the waiter and asked about this and his response was "oh, you want pineapple?" Of course I responded that we did but instead of remaking our drinks he just brought out a couple of pieces of pineapple and added them to our drinks. I then proceeded to explain to him that I think he had confused the cocktails pointing out that the one he made us was the one listed above. He asked if I wanted him to remake them to which I said yes. Finally with the cocktail we ordered in hands (and stomachs) we proceeded to ordering our meals. We each had an appetizer as well as an entree. Of the 6 plates only 2 were decent: The heart of palm salad and the smoked marlin tostada (which was great and the only reason this review has more than 1 star). EVERYTHING else was so over salted that I left the meal feeling like my tongue had cracks in it from the immense amount of salinity. We went to Puntarena today. The ambience was nice and the decor was very welcoming. We began by asking for a few margaritas. The drinks were okay. We continued by ordering our food. The waiter explained the menu very well. We all chose different plates. We ordered the "Arroz Especial", "Pasta con Camarones", and the "Milanesa". The Arroz Especial was over seasoned and crunchy. Not good at all. The pasta de camarones was not seasoned at all. The pasta didn't have any taste. The milanesa was the best plate. And even the Milanesa wasn't even that good. However, what happened next was the true reason I am rating this restaurant a one star. We paid a total of $158.00 for drinks and food we didn't like. We left $10.00 tip. As we were leaving a different waiter took the tip money of the table, and then made us aware that usual tip is 10%; and very rudely waited for us to tip more. 10% is customary in the US for ok service, but a waiter would never come and tell you he deserves more money, especially at an "upscale" restaurant.
