Spicy Tuna Tostada
Alec F.

What first brought our attention to this little courtyard was the restaurant Azul, however after being told the wait would be 1.5 hrs we sidled over to Puntarena and decided to give it a try after a quick menu peruse. The dining room really opens up as you move back to an uncovered courtyard with a green, leafy living wall. The server was very gracious and helped us out by understanding English. Even though we our group initially came to Mexico with the conviction that we probably wouldn't want to eat any seafood, we decided that at a restaurant of this caliber we could give it a try. I ordered a seared ahi tuna with soy butter sauce which was grilled perfectly with a salty and savory butter that complimented the tuna perfectly. The mashed potatoes were creamy and a nice compliment to the fish. Another group member ordered the spicy tuna tostadas and had nothing but good things to say about them. We had to ask a few times for some more bread as well as the check at the end, but otherwise our server was very helpful and the food made its way out quickly. I would definitely recommend Puntarena if you are in the area!

The sangria just need to mix it a little and not to strong if you aren't a heavy drinker

First of all this gem was within walking distance of the Airbnb I was staying at so if was a score for me. The ambience was very eye catching you can not miss the huge "living wall" that has a pathway and a bike to that wall, very open setting so it's a night where it may be a little chilly bring a coat since it is a open roof. Which is a nice contrast when you are in the streets of Mexico city and able to walk into a place that makes you feel far away. The fish that my boyfriend and I ordered was spectacular and it doesn't come in your traditional plate but a serving sauce pan, which we thought was a nice touch, unfortunately the sides are purchase separately which can add up but other than that the food was up to par. Definitely worth a try if you are in Mexico City

We were trying to get a table at Azul but failed. Too many people waited. A waiter recommended us Puntarena. I don't know why there weren't many people in it, but it does have fascinating environment and nice service. The sea food is fresh and delicious. We also ordered several dishes other than sea food, such as the snow crab rolls, fried Japanese rice and short ribs (love it!). All tastes really good! In addition, we tried the drinks there. I didn't drink very often so I can't tell whether the drinks were good or not. I just can say I quite enjoyed the cocktail there.

Puntarena is a good fish restaurant in Centro Historico. It was easy to get a table for six as this restaurant is not as busy as its more famous neighbour Azul. The interior of Puntarena is beautiful; a wonderfully tall courtyard has a moveable roof to protect from the elements in case of rain, and the far wall is a field of various vertically planted grasses. I ordered the Seabass frontera ceviche which was too citrusy for my liking. I much preferred the spicy tuna tostada. The seared tuna is also a good choice, and the butter mahi mahi was also great. The reason I gave this place 4 stars and not 5, is that even with the great ambiance, the service could have been a bit better and the value for money is not as good as many other restaurants in CDMX.

We visit México City once a year from NYC. Puntarena is my all time favorite restaurant! The food is always amazing and consistent. However, I must admit the service is so top notch that is also why I want to go back. They make you feel so welcomed and included. Actually, this year when we walked in...one of the servers ran up to us and said "Dar una buena acogida" (Welcome Back)! He actually remembered us from the year before. It's always easy to walk in and get seated. Attaching photos of my favorites.

Excellent food and service but overly expensive. I ate here with a colleague on a Tuesday evening and the place was empty whereas the Azul in the same building had a wait of 30 minutes for a table. A highlight was the buratta salad (380 pesos). This was beautifully presented and delicious. I would suggest Puntarena if you are looking for a quite restaurant and cost is no problem.

Shrimp in cilantro mayo and stir-fried spicy tuna.. this was soooo amazing!!! Very flavorful

The place looks amazing, the decoration is really pretty. The food and drinks were good. I had the octopus which was cooked perfect, very tasty and my husband had fish with potatoes which was food and felt fresh but nothing memorable. The ambience was really nice we would go back again and try something else.

We had lunch at the Torre Virreyes location, near the offices of half a dozen Mexican Private Equity firms, so lots of well-dressed customers. The seafood is fresh and scrumptious - it's obviously personal, but I could eat this every month as opposed to once a year for Tex-Mex. They have a green chilli sauce that looks like guacamole but would numb your tastebuds!

What a surprise and what a wonderful restaurant. The courtyard makes for a wonderful long lunch. The seafood is amazing - we were a large group and ordered a selection of seafood starters - sashimi, ceviche, etc all were delicious and presented beautifully. The mains were equally amazing - I had the miso cod - the portion itself was very large and the fish was prepared excellently with a creamy, almost buttery finish. The service is warm and attentive - and helpful for non Spanish speakers. 6 stars!!

Then, allow the friendly staff to bring as many items from the menu as you can handle. Come with a group so you can share. An absolute must is the whole fish done à la Contramar, one side of the split fish coated in a punchy parsley sauce and the other in a red adobo rub. Served with flour tortillas (which are refillable) and black bean dip, you'll be instructed how to compose perfect bites. Then, choose your own adventure! We also had both the 4 piece each shrimp tostadas and tuna tostadas. Radically different so getting both doesn't duplicate. The pasta (spaghettini) with clams was buttery and garlicky and the pasta was surprisingly not overcooked. Biggest surprise was the grilled soft shell crabs (with corn tortillas). They came pre cut then reassembled so it was easy to pick them up and pop them in your mouth. The grill flavor was fantastic and we were all impressed. We finished with a slice of coconut cake which was like a caramel coated macaroon. Perfect! Large wine list by the glass and bottle, many cocktails, sangria and beer to choose from. Definitely a place to visit when in Mexico City. Sorry for the lack of photos-- we forgot because we dove into each dish (we were hungry and they looked so good)! Got one good one though...

We also ordered the smaller contrarmar size for 2 people because we wanted to try a bunch of other things from the menu! I can't imagine if we bought the bigger size.. it's still a lot of fish! Contramar is believed by many to be a "must have" restaurant in Mexico City. I'm so glad that…read moretheir sister restaurant, Entremar, has an identical menu, easier to attain reservations, and it was located near to me in Polanco. Being from California, I was surprised to hear that they opened their newest location at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas last month. We ordered the tuna tostada that people rave about. It was ok. We could have used some more assertive flavor from acid or spice. I couldn't eat a whole fish (their signature dish), so we went with shrimp in their adobo rub in a taco and fish al pastor. These were also just ok, but the price tags are high for their entrees. I've seen pictures of others fish al pastor with onions and cilantro and that certainly would have added something I felt was missing. The one thing we ordered and loved was their seasonal mackerel ceviche which was in an apple/citrus/olive oil sauce. It was unique and delicious. I think their ceviche and aguachile are probably their strengths, but the cost is pretty high to leave feeling underwhelmed. Honestly, we will be going back to mi compa chava for better seafood
