Malahide Beach - Beautiful beach. Great for a stroll

Having grown up with amazing Australian beaches on my doorstep, I often long for a deserted sandy…read morebeach to escape to, to indulge my sand and surf addiction. Howth doesn't cut it, nor Dun Laoghaire, and Bray doesn't have the answer either. For me, the only Dublin beach that even goes halfway towards holding the answers to all of life's problems is Malahide. If you're lucky enough (go on a weekday!) you might even get the entire beach to yourself. There's nothing more enthralling than being alone with a vast expanse of beach infront of you, and being free to skip, dance, sing or scream, whatever floats your boat at the time. Malahide Beach is also good for a sit down. It offers a lovely vista out to Lambay Island, Howth and Island's Eye (depending on how far you walk, that is..) Also look on the ground.. there are some lovely shells for the finding if you look hard enough. From Malahide Beach you can take the coastal walk all the way to Portmarnock (but beware, it's 5km away so is no stroll through the park.) Malahide is definitely my pick of Dublin beaches.

Unfortunately no swimming on malahide beach due to dangerous tides.

Belvedere House Gardens & Park - Within walled gardens

Yelp 100 Challenge 2019 - # 87/100…read more A love story turned sour, the family drama of brothers who became bitter enemies, a wall built between two houses because of jealousy are but few of the curiosities and intrigue surrounding the history of the Belvedere House. The Jealousy Wall is both grotesque and impressive. I can only imagine the intense anger and hatred someone would have to intentionally put up a hideous wall to separate yourself from family. Our visit was on a day of true Irish weather, rainy, windy, and cold. Walk through the gardens and let both nature and man-made architecture fascinate you. We enjoyed our Irish breakfast at their cafe. Restrooms are clean and parking was readily available (we were the only crazy visitors that rainy day).

I've given this a three star as we felt cheated. We were staying in the nearby Bloomfield hotel and…read morewe bought our passes there. We were told that the house was open as we wanted to see it and on arrival, but only after tendering the tickets and going through into the place did we find the house was shut and the glasshouse was shut. There were no signs or indications that the house was shut - it's almost dishonest. Had we known it was shut we wouldn't have bothered. So like many other people that day we effectively paid to walk round a park and lake when we could just as easily have walked around the lake and a nearby picnic area for free. There is a lovely cafe and coffee bar in the grounds that merits at least 4 stars but there's equally good cafes around that you don't have to pay just to get in. They also have dog kennels to leave pooch as pooches aren't allowed in the gardens but pooches can accompany owners around the lake and a nearby picnic area outside for free. I'd better stop writing as I dislike being ripped off and the more I think of it I'd be inclined to drop this to 2 stars.

This park is mostly fields rather than being an ornamental park, but they have got area with artificial lakes which are quite picturesque. They've also got a reasonably decent set of paths going through it in various ways. The fields are used for sports and there's a couple of GAA clubs and at least one soccer club attached to it. There are also a few pockets of wooded areas with young trees - beware of teenage knacker-drinkers in these spots come evening time! Most of the entrances to the park are gated but there are always some which don't close, certainly at the north end, which is important to know as the gates can close as early as 4pm in the winter. This park is mostly used by people jogging or walking their dogs, or to get the kids to run around. The park rules state that you can't have dogs off the lead, but the rules aren't enforced as long as you keep dogs under control and away from the birdlife at the lake areas (they are very strict about this). The "river" poddle runs though the park, and although it's basically a stream it does have the honour of also being the moat of Dublin Castle (which is mostly underground now).

There are large colonies of wildfowl here, including a resident population of Mallard ducks, coot and moorhen. It is a lovely place to come for a walk or to feed the ducks with the family. Definately a place to go if you are in the area.
