The restaurant offers a lunchtime deal of two courses for £10. I decided just to order off the menu however, as I didn't fancy the vegetarian option. To start I got the courgette fritters which were very tasty. For the main I plumped for the apple and mushroom stroganoff which was decent pub plain fare but not worth the £8 price tag in my opinion The Fox and Hound was the perfect place for a family lunch. We arrived with two babies in tow which was easily accommodated. My only other complaint is the fact that the restaurant closes between 3 and 5pm, leaving not much time to linger over a cup of tea.

I thought this place closed down as there were no current ratings for 2014. This pub is difficult to find after exiting off the main freeway but our group was able to find it with help from local businesses outside of Glasgow. This building is inviting and warm. Bought a pint of Houston Warlock and 1/2 pint of Killellen reasonably priced at about 3.5 pounds and 1.8 respectively. The flavor of the warlock was too bitter and dark but drinkable. The Killellen tasted as a pale ale should, tart and acidic. The microbrewery is located on the premise and you can purchase a case of beer to go. No shirts or hats for sale. :-). The carpet is unique as the fireplace and lounge area. Families do congregate here as well as the young folks who like to drink beer. The town of Houston is suburban and quiet. Lots of Mercedes and Porsches driving amongst the coaches and economy cars passing by. Hehehe Haven't tried the food but would come back for a pint of Guinness or Warlock.

The new owners however appear intent on destroying this so its no longer the same Fox we loved. The Houston Inn sits at the top of the road and from the outside has the same old world charm. Inside it is more modern, all wood and leather chairs. For me it doesn't gave the same old world charm that the Fox had but it was growing on me. Price wise it is cheaper than the Fox (£10.40 for two glasses of red and a pint) and has a few different wines on offer (unlike the Fox under its new ownership), It seems to do well for food - solid pub type dishes (fish and chips, lamb shanks, burgers), all reasonably prices and the food coming out looked lovely! I think it will take a few more visits till it settles into being my new local when I'm visiting family but even after a couple of hours it was growing on me, so its a good start with its decent prices and efficient staff.

With the extremely popular and more traditional Fox and Hound pub across the road, the Houston Inn has gone for a more modern look with leather couches, flat screen TVs, exposed stone walls and coal fires. While the interior is nice it is a little bit cold and unfriendly and not really what I personally look for in a pub. Speaking of cold and unfriendly the staff aren't particularly pleasant considering this is a local village pub where everyone knows everyone and such like. I have eaten here once and it was ok but nothing to write home about. If you ever find yourself in the Houston area I recommend the Fox and Hound over the Houston Inn any day.

The table did feel quite cramped though for such a large group as we were set downstairs next to another booth - may be nice to have a large table separate for special occasions. The staff were accommodating in weaving in and around the sleeping baby too which was kind of them. Everyone's food orders came out with great timing and no one had any gripes. Such large portions for the meals and everything tasted as if it'd been cooked fresh! I opted for the seafood platter (normally a sharing appetiser) which had a lovely selection of smoked salmon, prawn cocktail, scampi and sweet chilli prawns. Would've been good to have some bread/oat cakes served with it to serve e.g. the smoked salmon onto. One issue may have been the fact the waiter asked my Granda 3 times if he was finished with his dinner. Now it was clear he wasn't as he had loads left and infact had the fork up to his mouth. The servers at times were a bit pushy to clear the table but a bit of consideration, especially of older clientele wouldn't have gone a miss. That being said, I can't wait to return to try some more of the menu as you really are spoiled for choice here!

Topped off with slow and brusque service, I would not recommend. Had been trying out this place for lunch with a view to bringing a large party at Christmas time as we live locally but will now look at a different venue.
