The side of chips it came with certainly didn't hurt... Then there's the obscure (to me) beer selection. I'm still getting to learn about brews on this side of the pond, and was quite pleased with the pint of Cairngorm Black Gold I sampled. One could get quite an education on ales with all the options on tap at Blackfriars. Other yelpers have noted how busy it gets in here, but that was counter to my own experience. Perhaps the mid-afternoon timing of our visit played to our favor. Other than the large table of businessmen in the corner, I think we might have been the only other party there. It might only be 1500 here, but it's gotta be happy hour -somewhere-!

The ramen is thick and hearty--less soupy than in a traditional Japanese place. The bar is a classic beer-heavy pub. Service is friendly. They have variations on music--one night was a DJ spinning, another night was a Celtic kitchen band. Another night just their staff spinning vinyl. There's not a tourist in sight. This is a place of locals--but they made me feel welcome. An outstanding spot.

Redmond's is a nice looking, welcome pub from the outside and lovely and cosy inside. Tweed booths and tall benches mean there's seating for every occasion - on a Thursday lunch time it was pretty quiet though so I grabbed a window seat. Looking over the menu there's a good selection of bits and pieces like flatbread pizza (and mini versions), salads and the aforementioned steamed buns (chicken, pork, mushroom and prawn). I like the menu - it's different from most pub offerings and it's refreshing to see something a bit different. The guy working was super helpful and welcoming, and suggested the pork bun, but as I was just after a snack I thought I'd stick with what I love and ordered a chicken bun. The chicken is crumbed in panko breadcrumbs (the delicious, super crispy kind) and has a hot mayo sauce with it. The bun is £4 or you can get a side with it for £5.50 (soup, salad, wedges). The bun arrived quickly and was nicely presented with a wee garnish of salad. I took out the cucumber as I'm really not a fan, and bit into the bun. Then, I giggled. Yeh, sometimes I giggle when I eat, what of it? That's when you know I'm really happy. The bun was perfectly pillowy soft and delicious. The spicy mayo gave it the right amount of kick, and the chicken was crispy and tender inside. YUM. The bun does have a tendency to stick to your teeth a little but just keep wolfing it down and enjoy. I enjoyed everything about this pub - the decor, the music, the staff and the food. I went for "The Best Ever" Roastbeef sandwich and the name did not deceive. The beef was amazing and they did not skimp on the portion. I had the horseradish sauce on the side but happily added it back to the sandwich as it had a bite but wasn't overly spicy. I opted for curly fries to accompany my sandwich which were super yummy. I opted for a special; the Steak Philly baguette - at around £8-9 the dearest item on the menu. My friend had the italian sausage pasta. Service was quick and the food arrived piping hot after a short wait. Presentation was first class, and the food delicious. The steak in my baguette was flavoursome, tender and lean. The generous helping of steak was stuffed in the philly cheese -lined crusty baguette and served with salad and fries. Excellent value for money. It was the extra touches that made my Bar 91 review 5* instead of 4* one. A small but notable example being when I asked for a glass of tap water, it was served with ice and a wedge each of lime and lemon. And when a larger table came available, the staff asked if we'd like to move from our stool-seated bar - we stayed put, but it was great customer service. Looking forward to eating here again - the prices are excellent for the Merchant City, and quality is first class. So, now it's on my food-places list as well as drink-places. Yay!

I hadn't been to Munro's since the closure of the ol' Captain's Rest. It's such a complete difference. I did like the kinda dinginess of the Captain's Rest and the vibe of the place especially when there was a gig on. Alas I have been converted by the bright lights of Munro's. It looks so much bigger and there's lots of light coming in through the many big windows. The day we went it was the quarter finals of Wimbledon with Andy Murray playing, I was so pleased to see they had it on the teles when we arrived. I was super addicted and was glad to get my fix. My man had to book a table as required by the Itison deal, so I was pleased to get a good size table. The staff were really nice and helpful and explained, when I asked, what we could choose from the menu on the deal. We could choose from the burger, pizzas or hot dog. I opted for the burger, which also had mozzarella and bacon and came with chips. It was very delicious and extremely filling. I would defintiely go back and try more on their menu. It is a tad hipster but visiting on a week day night it was ok but I can imagine it gets pretty mental at the weekends. Good food and somewhere a wee bit different.

Most of the other bars within a mile radius of this joint seem to close down - perhaps it's to do with how clogged up this road is with traffic, or the fact that the sparse bars this area has to offer seem squashed and exposed at the bottom of flats the 80s produced. For all these reasons, Three Craws is like a spacious and family orientated ranch compared to that. It's part of a chain so expect the standard pub fayre - fish and chips, bangers and mash, two for £8 pound deals...I used to eat in here quite a lot with my ex's family and we always enjoyed the food. It was stodgy and wholesome. Nevertheless, we had the same complaint as Gillian did with bar staff. They were always ice cold and not too eager to help when things went wrong with the orders...which they had a tendency to. We had a running joke that everytime we visited the Three Craws, the drink we wanted to order wouldn't be available. Towards the end of our visits there, it was not so much a joke than a reason not to return. I don;t know if it was to do with the fact we visited on Sundays (which was quiz night at the time) but my ex's dad had various grumbles about the poor selection of ales. Rather than encourage the staff to amend the situation, they often seemed irate that we were dissatisfied. I work in customer service and the last thing you want is a complaint but we were very mild mannered and understanding of the whole thing, so to be treated by staff the way customers can often be rude to you at the other end, it's just gets my goat. It wasn't the end of the world that we couldn't always get decent beer or ales on tap, but a bit more sympathy would've been nice. This was a while ago now so the staff have no doubt changed but certainly when we visited the staff had a knack of blowing a chill into the air of an otherwise cosy, laid back pub. Hopefully something's been changed on that front because we otherwise have no complaints!

At night it's got a nice atmosphere, never too roudy, my husband and I like to go there for a drink every now and then. Only negative for me is that the loos are down a fairly steep set of stairs which can get a bit scary as the night goes on.
