My brother recommended Armendariz Tax service so I drove all the way to Montebello, CA; a 2.5 hour drive in traffic. My brother prepared me for what to expect. He said to make an appointment and show up early for the appointment. Mid-week afternoons are best for shorter wait times. There are long wait times because the the demand for this service is high. I have endured waits of 3 to 5 hours because I didn't do my own homework and ask about Raul's schedule when I made my appointment. I also have been in and out in less than one hour. Anyways, you see one of the staffers first to get the taxes started. Then they will tell you what the return amounts will be. If you are satisfied, then that's it. You sign, pay and go. However, you always have the choice to wait and see Raul, the owner. As a former IRS auditor, he helps you to maximize your return and often finds several hundred (or even thousands) of dollars more for you. Raul is a down to earth guy. He loves his family, his horses and his tequila. Even though I see him only one day per year, he always remembers me and asks follow up questions about the happenings in our lives and in our business. He even personally calls me to inquire when we will be going up to do our taxes. The pricing is higher than I ever paid for locally, but the return amount has been 4 to 5 times the amounts I would get locally. If I got a return of $2600 and paid $250 locally, I definitely don't mind paying $750 for a $17,000 return. He has told me that the fee we pay is not just for the tax service, but also includes tax advice for the entire year at no additional cost. One year, I was flagged for a pre-audit for a mistake in representing my Health Savings account for 2 years' of distributions and was charged $1700 by the IRS. I called Raul, and he quickly prepared two 1040X amendment forms and electronically filed them for me free of charge. I even got an additional $126 return as a result. If you want to drop your pricing, send referrals and he'll discount you $50 for each referral. (Disclaimer: Please ask the office if this is still valid.) As for his appearance and/or demeanor; yes, he can be strict with his employees, but that is because he has standards that he wants to meet. He knows why so many people go to him and does not want to lessen that service. When someone is as good and successful at what they do, believe me, they can dress however they want. People who understand this will not go to him because he dresses like a banker or a fancy attorney; they go to him because he is just plain good at what he does. If you're a person who will take offense to someone openly demonstrating passion and real human emotions and as a result, sacrifice possibly thousands of dollars more that you could have gotten here, then so be it. That only means one less person for me to have to wait for my turn to see Raul.

My return perhaps took a bit longer than some, had many different jobs over that year and all those tax forms came trickling in. She handled them quickly and efficiently.
