Had a nice family day out and we decided we would go here…read more We went up to Leeds and then had to catch the Bus 19 which took us up between Temple Newsam house and the golf grounds, we then had to walk about 10 minutes to get to the actual place. Walking up to it you're surrounded by green and then there are a load of tree's that seperate so you can walk through them towards the house and grounds, it was like something out of a postcard. When we actually got to the grounds we were stumped on where to go first! Do we go into Temple Newsam House OR do we head towards their little farm OR do we wonder around their 1500 acres of woodlands, fields etc!? Spoilt for choice We started off with the house itself. Prices for a family tickets (2 adults & up to 3 children) are: Temple Newsam House: £9.50 Home Farm: £8.70 Joint Ticket: £15.50 The house is magnificent! You are asked not to take photo's. This is because of the flash as the light and heat can damage pictures etc, it can cause a chemical reaction. I did take a few pictures, but made sure my flash was OFF as not to damage anything. You have a choice of walking around the house reading bits and bobs, or you can use these handheld blocks where you punch in the number per room and a recording will guide you through the room and explain. There are also children's versions of this. We all got confused by it so we opted out lol. Had a little laugh as there is a picture of a man near the picture gallery and he was a spitting image of my father - didn't take a photo of this. Despite it being so big and perhaps a bit dull for children, our children loved it and were full of questions that we tried to answer. They were excited about going into different rooms and their favourite room was the 'nannys room' where they had modern toys for children to play with. We then headed towards the farm. I will be honest with you, I didn't like the farm as much as I would have normally - perhaps it was because of the weather? I would have liked it to have been a farm where we could feed the animals too because places such as the barns with cows, they only had 1 large bucket of this protien stuff which meant that only the biggest cows had managed to get to it (would YOU try and squeeze inbetween 2 fully grown cows!?) and so the younger smaller ones had no chance - perhaps later in the day they would?? :( . One was even eating the straw on the ground which was covered in 'you know what', so I didn't like that bit. The highlight of the farm was that we saw piglets being born! That was amazing! The grounds are huge! As I've already said, all of this is within 1500 acres of land and they have woodlands you can explore which we didn't have time to get to, so it's deffinately an all day trip or perhaps even 2 days. I would go again, although I wouldn't pay for the farm again.

The village of Cawood was once known as 'the Windsor of the North', thanks to it being the location…read moreof a Palace belonging to the Archbishops of York (now in the care of the Landmark Trust). The river Ouse here is wide and navigable and is immediately downstream of the confluence of the River Wharfe. For most of its history, crossing the river had to be done by ferry, although highwayman Dick Turpin is said to have forded the river here on his famous ride from London to York. It was here in 1530 that Cardinal Wolsey was arrested for treason, recalled in the nursery rhyme 'Humpty Dumpty'. In 1870 an Act was passed to provide a permanent swing bridge here, which was duly completed in 1872. It now carries the B1222 across the river. It is a surprisingly impressive structure for so small a road and village; while still narrow, its series of truss arches with the central tower for the bridge operator is impressive. In recent years the bridge has suffered from closures at short notice, thanks to its age: significant repairs were therefore undertaken in 2003. Roundhay park will always be a special place to me, I have so many memories here!…read more Situated a short drive from the city centre and with plenty of bus options, it's a MASSIVE expanse, with green areas, woodland, a lake, a cricket ground and more. There are other options in Roundhay, such as Tropical World (paid entry- animals and plants, a great day out for kids and grown ups!), as well as gorgeous flowered gardens to wander round. If you've got a dog and want to explore, it's perfectly dog friendly, but obviously you must clear up after them, and in the gardens it might be best keeping them on the lead. Within the park itself you can stroll around the massive lake (or jog if you're that way inclined!) or sit in one of the bandstands or on the grass and have a picnic. There's a kids park, and a gorgeous restaurant right on the lake, which I've never been to but hope to eventually. In the wooded bits there's plenty to explore, with some little ruins dotted around to get the kids' imagination going. Roundhay is a fantastic and free day out. I've never had any problems with crowds, yes it gets busy but it's so big there's plenty of room!

How cool is it that this 14th century medieval street is still in existence and in such great…read morecondition? Dating back to 1086, it was a meat market area. In fact, a lot of the buildings still have original hanging hooks. The area has evolved quite a bit since its inception. Now a quaint cobblestone street lined with shops and restaurants in buildings boasting original architecture and architectural elements. Tudor structures once part of the meat packing district are quaint and welcoming. As you can imagine, it's bustling, most especially during the height of tourist season.

My wife and I visited Barley Hall in September 2024. It was an afterthought, having bought tickets…read moreto the Jorvik Viking museum, this was a small additional fee. But it was worth it. Not a long visit, probably an hour or so. There are several rooms to explore, each with laminated info cards to pick up and read the history and purpose. Interactive games for kids learning too. Along with the Jorvik museum, this gave us a really good insight to medieval life in York. It makes sense to get the package, even though we did not have time to visit the other 2 attractions in the package. Finding the Hall was an adventure in itself, tucked away down a narrow lane, under an archway into a courtyard. We were there on a weekday, at the end of the day, and it was not busy. We were able to take our time and enjoy the exhibit.

Coffee Yard is a snickelway that runs between Stonegate -- a very fashionable address in the later…read moremiddle ages a site tucked away in one of its back alleys--Barley Hall, a fifteenth-century townhouse in Coffee Yard. A house occupied by one of Richard III's urban supporters. One of the emerging middle class that gave such strong allegiance to the Yorkists. Barley Hall is a stunning medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the house was hidden under the relatively modern façade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history uncovered. Barley Hall's medieval origins had been long forgotten by 1980, when it appeared to be a jumble of brick structures. Ironically, millions of tourists had literally walked right through what was originally an internal corridor of the L-shaped house as they used the Coffee Yard snickelway (an alley-like passageway from one street to another) to travel from busy Stonegate to Swinegate and Grape Lane. I am not sure but I think I stood in a coutyard, that I ten realised wasn't, that may have been a part of this. It was a roofless room and I was looking at interior walls. The building has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate what it would have looked like as the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. It is a hands-on living museum, letting visitors experience life in a 15th century house in the centre of York. This is one historic attraction where you are encouraged to touch and pick up exhibits. Sit on the chairs, open chests, and generally explore the house as you choose,and experience what it would have been like to live in Medieval England.. They also have many events. So, last night i went to a showing of 'the innocents' at the magnificent kirkstall abbey…read more It was part of the first gothic film festival. The abbey was all decked out in mood lighting with whispy ethereal mist blowing through the cloisters. There was various 'props' adding to the effect, and within the abbey you could sit and listen to ghost stories. The film itself was a classic b&w, tame by todays standards but seen in the dark open abbey ruins was a brilliant experience.

A beautiful piece of architecture in the museum gardens, built in 1088 and the remains of one of…read morethe wealthiest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England. The abbey occupied the entire site of the Museum Gardens and sat opposite theYork minster. What is left of the abbey is the remains of the nave where the monks prayed and sang, and the cloister, where the monks washed their clothes and were allowed to speak. King Henry VIII banned all monasteries in England in 1530s. The monks at St Mary's were pensioned off in 1540 and the abbey buildings were converted into a palace for the King when he visited York. Gradually the abbey fell into ruins and what you see now is what remains!
