Having read about these guys before I was rather chuffed to spot their stall at the recent Cornucopia food festival event in the Corn Exchange. Taking my chance to browse their range, I wandered over to the stall and had a lovely wee chat with the chap manning their station, and had a good gander over the myriad of choices. As well as pickles there's a range of jams and such to choose from, all home made with fantastic ingredients - so if you're in any way a fan of preserves this is the place to look.
I'm always a fan of grabbing something special for friends and family around Christmas time, but having tried some of the samples on offer, I decided to be fully selfish and pick something for myself. Though I really enjoyed a taste of the traditional marmalade, I'm with Paddington when it comes to marmalade, I decided to opt for something to accompany a good cheese. Winter time means cheese, pickle and port to me so we discussed which ones would be best and his freshly made batch of beetroot and horseradish was too good to turn down.
The flavour has a kick, without being too hot like a chilli marmalade (I'm a spice wuss) but the beetroot gives it a soft finish and I can't wait to smother it on a decent cracker with some smoked bavarian cheese, or a good bit of cheddar! To be honest, I'd happily smatter it on toast, but I don't think I'll be doing that for breakfast. At £2 a jar, and a generous jar at that, it's a great price for something lovingly crafted and fresh as it comes. The chap was also utterly friendly and helpful, so there's plenty of banter to be had whilst you browse!
I shall update as I eat, and report back on which cheese suits it best! Also, I've a feeling I'll be back come Christmas shop-time, so hopefully will have some new flavours to boast... read more
