The gift shop is great. There are lots of Wheeling- and West Virginia-related items to purchase. I was looking for some kind of Mothman something-or-other, and I found a few cool cryptid knickknacks. I've said it before and I'll say it again: West Virginians love their cryptids and myths, and I love it. The gift shop also had lots of clothing, soaps, durable edible goods, art and other things. There's a restaurant inside the Wheeling Artisan Center, but it looked closed when we visited. Upstairs, there's a gallery with historic Wheeling items on display. You can learn about things that were made or originated in Wheeling, like Bayer aspirin, Mail Pouch Tobacco signs, and even a type of cigar. It's fun to peruse while you're in the area, and it's also free to visit.

This place does not have any real internet presence. In fact, I'm just now adding their listing to Yelp with this review. SMART Centre Market is definitely a hidden gem. It's well hidden from everyone, but it shouldn't be. This place is great! I just happened to come upon SMART Centre Market when visiting Wheeling. They have a gigantic dinosaur torso busting out of the front of their brick building. "What the heck is that?" I thought. And then: "That looks derivatively like the dinosaur that's busting out of the front of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis." Well, after talking to one of the owners of SMART, it turns out that the dinosaur at the front of the building is in fact based on the dinosaurs at The Children's Museum! How weird to be so far away from Indy and yet come across something so dear to my heart where I live? Anyway, SMART has all kinds of dinosaur treasures to look at, including displays of fossils. There are STEM toys to play with, books to read, and science-related things to purchase if the mood strikes you. The store used to be the site of a bank, so the restroom is inside a safe! You have to see it to believe it. SMART Centre Market might just have the most interesting restroom in all of Wheeling. I didn't get to visit the ice cream parlor inside SMART Centre Market, but I did peek inside, and there were several flavors of ice cream to choose from. There are little tables in the ice cream parlor, so you can sit and enjoy your ice cream before or after perusing the rest of SMART Centre. The owners are former science teachers. They have a real interest and passion in STEM topics and dinosaurs, which you can tell just by visiting. They also love interacting with children! My children were delighted by them, and my youngest asked me if we could visit again the next day. SMART Centre Market offers classes and camps for kids throughout the year -- just visit their social media to learn what they are and when they take place.

This place is fantastic with a lovely collection of high-quality handmade pottery which are made by artists in Wheeling. First, the studio and shop is only a 2 minute drive north of the main downtown area with nearby street parking available. Second, you'll see their inventory displayed as you enter the store and can ask about the different glazed colors on the pottery. Third, it's a little pricey but I think the high-quality of products made by local artisans is worth it. Fourth, you'll be supporting the local community with your purchase! Overall, it's worth a visit here in you're in town for a lunch stop during regular business hours on weekdays. I found Wheeling, WV to be full of historical gems (walk on the Suspension Bridge if you can and stop by the Heritage Port Park). Don't be fooled by first impressions - yes, it's easy to see that many dilapidated buildings need TLC. But there's also a positive sense of community in Wheeling.

Centre Market has the famous Coleman's Fish Market, plus a second location of Tito's Sloppy Doggs (called Tito's in the Market House), a cheese shop and Michael's Beef House, home of the original roast beef sandwich. There's a building that's not physically connected but still part of Centre Market, and it houses a coffee shop, a hand-pie bakery, an ice cream shop and an art gallery. This part of Centre Market also has comfy couches and games to play, so if you're looking for an area to hang out and stay a while, this part of Centre Market is your spot. I love a good food hall, and Centre Market is a good place to visit if you're looking to find something to eat but don't know what you want. Makes me sad that Wheeling used to be THE city in which to see and be seen. We bought a few sweets and sausages from local vendors and I am sure I could have spent WAY more money here. The building reminds me of the marketplace in Charleston SC on a much smaller scale. I hope these vendors can make it and I wish them a major boost of life and vitality. There are several different artists who have hand spun the glass into several different objects. You can see a few examples from the pictures I have listed. On certain days, on the lower level, a man comes and demonstrates glass blowing. You can view this and the glass museum for $10! Our last visit was June 30-July 8 of this year. Linda, Bruce and Tracy are all so warm and welcoming and the office/country store is so cute and inviting. I bought a beautiful candle which smells delightful and a cute sign for my bathroom. Whenever I look at them, they just conjure up such fond memories of our wonderful time there. The rooms are cozy and romantic and have a full kitchen. One thing I will never forget is when a fellow guest told Bruce that he could make a killing if he raised the rates and he responded, "No way! We want it to be affordable for everyone." How often do you find business people like that? That's probably why they are always booked. We love you out here in California.
