The staff is friendly and helpful, and the shops are full of unique finds you don't see anywhere else. It's one of those places you can wander around and always discover something new. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and we even got to try some delicious caramel apple tea which we had to bring home. I liked the cute shop and the various seating to browse through the books. The store has a nice relaxing atmosphere and quiet playlist. There was a variety of categories of books but a smaller selection. The prices were about the norm for private small bookstores. She has some new and mostly used and also sells local author's books and items. There was coffee available also which was a nice touch. The only reason for the 4 star is some prices on certain items were quite high in comparison to being found elsewhere.

I grew up spending all my babysitting money on sheet music for some time so I get excited when I get the chance to be in a music store. Luyben's is not super organized but the employees definitely know where EVERYTHING is. They found everything I asked for but were not into conversation at all and I was the only one in the store. I even heard them commenting on my selections and I tried to interject; which was met by blank stares. I wanted to Update my review to highlight the current show which ends Thursday January 25. It is really cool and worth a special trip to see! Susan Lordi Marker's "Echoes Of The Prairie: Works in Cloth" features beautiful textiles of silk, linen and cloth treated with mild acids and adorned with dyes and sometimes gold leaf that create a beautiful narrative of the light, colors and shadows that interplay in prairie ecosystems. Her passion and love for them and desire to raise awarness to their plight is inspiring. I especially love the storyboards that offer more information on the prairies and give you a chance to touch samples of all of the different fabrics and describe the artist's techniques. The exhibit currently featured is one mans personal collection of paintings inspired by the Flint Hills, all created by Kansas and Missouri artists over the past 3/4 century. The paintings were interspersed with related poetry and prose, historical and geographical displays of the region and even a PBS documentary video on the Flint Hills playing on a video monitor. A small self serve art gallery - I love the concept. Can't wait for the next installation.

I have since bought a house in the suburbs - (don't judge - Uber's my friend) and have purchased sporting banners for my garage and American flags for the house front. At work, I hang a national or state flag anytime I hire a new employee from somewhere that is not represented yet. I don't know how this place stays in business, since I'm usually the only one there at the time, but I'm so glad they are. They fill that niche to talk vexillology when you hear a cool NPR story about a nation contemplating changing it's flag. A great place to start that nerdy nephew a new hobby/ collection - you'll always know what to get him next year! Brick and mortar at its geekiest and patriotic best!
