The Scientologists made downtown Clearwater their home base and bought a significant percentage of the real estate over the years. Some of the businesses on N Fort Harrison street are affiliated with Scientology and are not actual independent local businesses. When I go downtown for a public outdoor yoga class in a parlk or a pop up market or some other very rare reason, Scientology folks are walking busily from place to place but won't typically look at you. It feels like a freaky science fiction movie when you experience it. Life is different in Clearwater.

The building was clean, stately, & easy to find your way around. The offices & staff were friendly & helpful. For traffic night court in a small city it had many more people than I have ever seen in Tampa. Per usual, many officers did not show up & those cases were dismissed. I was lucky...my officer showed up & was not going to let the matter drop. The judge was GREAT! He explained everything in detail & really listened to each case individually & in my humble opinion made fair & accurate assessments. What's a girl to do? Keep in mind, "Florida Man" is a meme for a reason and the Sheriff's Department has to deal with them. Pasco County Sheriff's Deputies in our side of the county are relatively congenial. They seem to use tools to work smarter. They are very responsive in letting the community know what's going on in the county via Twitter. They are BIG proponents of Ring/other video systems and make it easy for residents to report break-ins, mischief, etc. They have a detective who reviews reported events from the Ring system so they know who's out and about and can easily disseminate the information. The Port Richey/Hudson area is not some place you want to case the neighborhood. By the time you get around to finding a place to commit a crime, they already know your body, your face, have you on video and the Ring community probably already has a thread going on you. Why did I give the Sheriff's Department 4 stars instead of 5? Sheriff Nocco said some pretty inappropriate things about Occupy protesters during that period of time (2011-2012) that inferred his deputies would abuse their privilege under *his* direction (the video of his press conference was aired on TV). Our peaceful protests (signs and verbal) only crossed their purview once and they were NOT happy, but they did not become physically abusive over it. It was peaceful after all. I am sorry I can't give you any information on how the Sheriff's Department in this area interacts with African Americans. I've never, EVER crossed the path of any African American person that was threatening in stance, so if you feel threatened you need to get your white privilege/racism in check. The area has become more evenly split between Democratic and Republican voters and COVID statistics show a much higher percentage of white people suffering from the virus so take what you will from that. I offer this next bit of information in hopes that it offers perspective on this area in regards to what the Sheriff's Department has to deal with. Both Hudson (NY connection) and Moon Lake (descendants of one family) have a cluster of white supremacists. You will, from time to time (although less frequently over the last year) see them driving down US 19 with confederate flags as big as their raised up trucks flying from them. The ones from Moon Lake are more "Florida Man." Keep your distance from the Hudson group (no idea where they hang, but the Sheriff's office is aware of them from what I was told so they have to deal with that). We have several clusters of homeless groups. They pretty much stay to themselves, but the Sheriff's Department keeps an eye on them as well. This place is full of retirement communities which means a lot of old people who spend their days/nights looking out the window. Like I said earlier, this area isn't a good place to commit a crime if you're trying to get away with it. The Ring community is vast and wide and very adept at quickly spreading information about where you've been and where you're going. Drive VERY carefully if you're going down SR 52 in the dead of night. Drunk people wander across it from time to time, usually in dark clothes so be awake and alert if you're out driving then. Jasmine Road is another place where people for some unknown reason walk along the road in dark clothes (more than once I've come across someone pushing a stroller) so keep your eyes peeled as there are no sidewalks for anyone to walk on safely. Bottom line, the Sheriff's Department Deputies in West Pasco County generally try to be professional and congenial. They are well trained and equipped to deal with escalation though. Treat them as you'd like to be treated so you don't have to find out what those escalation tactics are. The State police are a completely different kettle of fish so make sure you've got a camera running at all times tucked away in a corner of the car, ESPECIALLY if you're traveling down I-95 and look like you're vacationing. The TSA agents are awesome, the lines move really quickly and efficiently. I have pre check status so that makes things even easier. They usually just have the old type scanner running but I ask to "opt in" for the body scan due to a total joint replacement and setting off every alarm possible. They graciously open the scanner for me every time without any hassle. Some airports seem aggravated when you ask because usually they have to bring another agent over. But here they seem to go above and beyond to accommodate your needs. Always a great experience and makes travel less stressful.

Back then, the furthest west I had traveled on Hillsborough Avenue was the Oldsmar flea market. I had no idea the city itself had such a rich history. This is a direct quote pasted from Wikipedia, which was provided by the Oldsmar Historical Society: The Oldsmar name dates to 1913 when automobile pioneer Ransom E. Olds purchased 37,541 acres (151.92 km2) of land by the northern part of Tampa Bay to establish "R. E. Olds-on-the-Bay". The name was later changed to Oldsmar, then to "Tampa Shores" in 1927, and finally back to Oldsmar in 1937. There is one interesting fact that I like to tell folks about Oldsmar. When the 727 area code was created in 1998, Oldsmar was excluded making it the only remaining municipality in Pinellas county with the 813 designation. Oldsmar is an interesting place, but unlike its neighbor to the west, Safety Harbor, there is not much action here. There are a few indie restaurants on Tampa Road, but it's mostly commercial-looking and the street is dominated by chains. To get into downtown is tricky, and most people do not even know it exists because it's off the beaten path and hidden. If there were more awareness, or better signage, something good could happen downtown. As of right now, there is one business; The Oldsmar Tap House. It's been there since before the craft beer boom, and their beer selection is always pleasing. For food in Oldsmar, I like to hit up Jack Willie's. This is a tiki-biker-bar with a bit of a Key West vibe. The burgers, wings and grouper sammiches are hands down the best in the NW Hillsborough/east Pinellas area. Also unknown to many is that there is a city park with beach way past R.E. Olds park if heading south on Shore Drive. This is just another example of how Oldsmar is failing as a city. It sits at the top of the bay and is poised to explode, but it just needs a little marketing help and investors who are willing to open up some businesses in the downtown area.
